Hit off motorbike, with vid

Bit of advice.
As he has admitted liability, you don’t have to touch your insurance at all. Demand his insurance pay up for a full rebuild. They will argue that the bike is not worth it, but you stand your ground and argue that its not the point. You want your bike restored to the condition it was in before the accident. His insurance has to repair if you demand it.
I’ve been lucky in that I’ve never had an accident, but my cousin did it with a 54 plate Fiesta. Value at the time, £2,300. Damage repair estimate was £4,600. They got it repaired.
Sisters Ford KA worth £3,500. Accident damage estimate was £6,000. They settled on £5,000.

Push for repair till it’s either repaired, or you are happy with the settlement.

Get well soon. Handy you managed to get caught on someone else’s cam.

I think Bristle was (one of) the first places to allow motorcycles into bus lanes way back in nineteen canteen. Reading followed I think. There was the odd trial one in London, but widespread adoption was hampered by the fact that the newt-loving mayor of the time didn’t like 'em.

It’ll write-off dead easy. I used to run (at the time, late 90s) an 8 year Kawasaki and a rear wheel was over 450 quid. Japanese parts prices very quickly rack up the bill. I’m sure you’ll find another one like it stashed somewhere.

Thanks for the advice, I will stand my ground on it if that’s what it takes.

Lucky it wasn’t more serious.

Now on the other hand, there is a reason not to overtake on the inside lane.

I know what you did was ok etc but overtaking on the inside, you increasing your risk.

Ouch i had exactly the same happen to me on Archway in London, was going up the bus lane (it was out of hours so allowed in it) and a woman went into the side of me. I ended up with two fractures on my left leg !.

This was the mid 90’s was driving a 1979 Kawasaki Z440 i had paid £250 for it, insurance company gave me £900 for the bike, to expensive to fix and told me i could keep it not worth the hassle of coming picking it up.

Cost me £2 to fix it by buying a pattern indicator lens outta M&P and straightening the handlebars with a scaffy bar

Sold the bike a few years later for £500

Crikey! half a second later and you would have been in the side and properly *****d up, good show on the bloke with the camera for stopping.

The insurance will almost certainly write it off, you’re best bet is to by it back and repair it with used parts as long as the frame and forks are straight, it will be easy enough, why does everyone in Bristol drive like it’s some big contest, I hope he is being prosecuted for driving without due care and attention, also as an experienced rider there is a good chance you could have read the situation a little better, just a bit of consecutive criticism I’m not calling you’re riding into question but I believe the car that hit you off would have been visible and action taken, the best safety feature you can retro fit is the loudest horn you can find fitted next to the factory one.

This brings the back marker out of his/her Facebook induced trance saved me loads of times and its less strenuous than pulling off door mirrors.

Its a bus/bike lane mate separated from the other lane by a solid white line, no one should be crossing that line.
Car driver has a guaranteed 3 points £100 fine plus a fine for driving in a bus lane plus whatever he gets for knocking the op off his bike plus a fine for driving around with a roof rack on, and fine him for those shoes as well.

Good point regarding solid white, but there is a layby there?
Regardless, car driver is a fool, stupid u turn manoeuvre. Well done THAT dash cam hero!

So the bloke who filmed it… actually let the chap who hit you… make the turn, didnt he check his nearside mirror either?

Right on Bubsy… I hate those ■■■■■■■ shoes.

Not wanting to have a go and I hope you get well soon. Im just wondering as I can understand why the driver didn’t expect you although he should have looked

Probably a bus/taxi/cycle/motorcycle lane

A lot of bus lanes are across the country, you’d think a professional driver would be aware of that

Can you imagine if it was a cyclist? Also, in some parts of the country, the paramedics use motorcycles to get to the scene quicker, and blood bikes too. Well done Snowman for being the 1st to put partial blame on the innocent party :unamused:

tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/red-ro … -bus-lanes

Thanks for the links. Don’t have time to read them. :stuck_out_tongue:

My quick scroll down the page shows much progress since I used to dart around London’s roads. I remember the three trials and the only other m/c bus lane was only to allow southbound access to Princes St from Moorgate to get down to bank.

I was referring of course to Red Ken the former Mayor

The car is turning right from a dedicated turn lane marked with an arrow. This goes back many years to when apart from the layby at the side of the road there was a large off road parking area complete with a toilet.
I stopped there late at night in the late seventies with a Borderer and there was no paper in the gents so I used the ladies. This must have been before the shirt lifters freqeunted these places.
This area like so many others has been closed for years although the toilet is still there boarded up and overgrown. The bus lane was put in after all this was closed so the right turn lane should have been removed at the same time.
There are also many tyre scuff marks on the road where trucks have used the spot to turn back.
The main road near where I live in Bristol has signs put on the lamposts saying this road will be resurfaced this year. How informative is that.

I think you’ll find if you read what I put properly that I was simply enquiring if it was a bus lane or not and offering an opinion on why the motorist wasnt expecting him. I didnt blame anyone as I didnt know all the facts. I spent about 15 minutes wording it to avoid apportioning blame. A few others managed to see that and simply answer the question so im quite happy its not my wording and more to do with the fact you didnt read it properly

Lol

I think the biker was going a bit too fast for the situation regardless of blame. The car turning was the unexpected sort of thing that a biker should expect.

I was doing 30mph in a 50mph limit in a decicated 24 hour bus/bike/taxi lane. No one should be attempting a U turn, blindly swerving across it in this manner, so you’re right, I wasn’t expecting it because it was a rediculous thing to do.

I’ve read it several times, and still agree with my post.

As I said, what if it was a cyclist, some of them guys do 30mph (same as OP) no probs.
The onus purely and simply was on a ■■■■ self important driver going across a solid white line into a lane that he shouldn’t have been in without looking.

I thought I’d update this post from a while back as it’s still ongoing and I may need some advice in the coming months.

I always paid for fully comp insurance and extra for legal help when taking out bike insurance. So I have had a solicitors firm doing everything for me but i don’t trust that they’re going to be sorting me out with the loss of earnings or much in the way of compensation.

So far I’ve received a cheque for the cost of the bike and my damaged motorcycle gear, gloves, helmet etc.

However, I’ve not received any compensation or loss of earnings. My accountant calculated it to be £1700 in loss of earnings.

The driver was taken to court earlier in the year and convicted of dangerous driving, given 5 points and a fine of around £350.

I slipped into a depression following the accident. I have been ill with depression in the past and I have been on and off antidepressants for 10 years or so but felt stable at the time and wasn’t taking them. I went back on a course of anti depressants and had some one to one and group CBT sessions which im glad to say helped a lot but was also time consuming and stressful.

I’m due to see the injury specialist which saw me after the incident, again in January, to give an assesment of any long term injury that i may have incurred to my foot.

I’m expecting a compensation offer after the second meeting with the specialist, or that is what I’ve been led to believe by the solicitors acting on my behalf.

If this legal firm turn out to be ■■■■ and aren’t able to get compensation or loss of earnings sorted out, I could do with help with another legal firm that may be able to do better please.

Sorry for the long post and thanks for any help.
