Hinos, anyone?

Keely Bros have a few new hino 8w tippers. They have some with clamshell grabs for loading their surface dressing gritters. I think they like them because they are cheap and simple.

my lastest work place,
the boss J Coombes as purchased two of these running out of Bardon Quarry

I see that Longcliffe Quarries are running at least one Hino now, mind you they had a MAN tipper back in the 1980’s but never bought another and remained faithfull to Foden.

Pete.

from what i hear pete they wish they had not seen the hino!
parts,or lack of! can be an issue

Hinos - 700 series - best 8 wheelers, none of the other 8 wheelers come anywhere near for looks, I’d say anyway. Speaking as an ex 8 wheeler driver on flats - ropes and sheets on Atkis, Fodens etc. nothing we had in those days was as good cab wise. And for reliabilty, ruggedness - just go to Ireland and see how many are there. Or New Zealand. A real working motor, looking really good when done up properly. In the old days regular drivers of the old style wheelers would never want to go on an artic, so I dont know why Hino would be making these, rather than just keep specializing in rigid 8s. In the UK a lot of anti Jap bias dictates attitudes. Churrs drives!

Paul Griffiths tipping lime with a Hino demonstrater in 2006.

I take it Griffiths weren’t overly impressed with it, Dave? I remeber Smiths had one for a short time but weren’t impressed. I looked in it one breaktime and the seatbase was torn and a couple of switches were broken. I understand MAN and Merc (Axor) dropped their prices which has made people think twice about Hinos.

one word for hinos crap

Probably a bit heavy for their type of work Nathan. It was when Foden were coming to an end. They were already running Volvo’s and have stuck with them up until now.
Cheers Dave.

Who’s driven them (any vintage) and what are your opinions?

like a datsun with ten stud wheels!!
this was a nearly new(08 reg ithink) at the time.460 engine -yeah right!
every switch in the cab feels like it will break off in your hand, gearstick the size of a boxing glove, slap across range change(aarrgghhh!!).i only borrowed it for the day-never again!!
only good point is that small bunk which is handy if waiting around and you can stash your gear on there.
why do you ask? surely they arent buying you one of these awful lorries to replace your foden?
andrew.

Heres one i’ve put on before.

We had one on demo it pulled well but was a bit cheap feeling in the cab but there’s a few firms round here who bought them when foden finished and they do seem to be lasting well and they were very cheap compared to other makes at the time but don’t know if thats still the case.
Ive heard a few people say they are a bit heavy on fuel though.

Drove few over here, 6x4 tippers, some with Hino 6 speed, bit gutless, but had a 6x4 420 with a road ranger and have to say I was happy with it, they will never be a Scania or a Volvo, but for what they are and in the right job/place they are decent enough.

I heard your firm is buying you one Muckaway, is that right? I know several people with them & they seem happy enough with them.

There seems to be quite a few 2006 - 2007 regs one about, same time as foden finished, but not so may newer ones,
were they not that good or do I just not see them.

had this one as a demo for 3 days best brakes on a wagon ive ever driven there like volvo s with the sliding wedge, gear change absolutley rubbish, cab a bit small<but im 6 foot 4 >have been told since that they are a bit heavy on juice

Had this one laying the floor to the reactor at Sizewell ‘B’ power station around 1988ish
It wasn’t registered for the road, & was one of a fleet used for the job non stop 24/7.
