I’ve got a question, do you pull foreign trucks that have a trailer number plate that doesnt match the unit number plate? I see it all the time!
But thats perfectly legal. In some countries the trailer is seperately registered & has its own identity & reg number.

That answers my then, cheers.
Highways Agency Traffic Officers don’t pull vehicles, they don’t do law enforcement, that’s the Police & VOSA’s job. The only time a HATO might stop a specific vehicle is for an obvious safety problem that normally the driver is unaware about, should a driver decide that he’s going to ignore their advice and carry on, a short radio message will bring the police along to deal with it one way or another.
but to be honest, a HATO stopping a vehicle is a very rare thing, and of the few that I’ve know, the driver has been well pleased to have been told about the problem.
As has already been said, trailers on foreign artics often have their very own registration number .
Highways Agency Traffic Officers (HATOs) can only pull trucks over for safety reasons. By now, all Traffic Officers should know that nearly all foreign trailers have a different registration number to the unit. It wasn’t common knowledge at first but those of us with a transport background soon put the others right. Hope this answers your question.
I always seem to think that hato’s are basically the same as vosa, assumed they pulled trucks for tacho checks etc aswell.
I never knew that about the number plates, actually clears up alot of other questions now

This is true, try telling the gendarmes that your registration is the same on the front of your unit as it is on your trailer and they get hugely confused. I had a trailer once that was known as T4. They kept asking where the trailer registration was, I was telling them it’s all under 1 registration. It’s 1 vehicle. Took me an hour to get it through to them.

try telling the BAG your right hand drive german registered unit is coupled to a uk tanker and the number plate needs to be the same as its an offence in the uk. lots of of pulls but to be honest they were all ok about it, never encountered a bad BAG or polizei
