Big Jase:
So how would you like us to remove a closure then? Stop the traffic for 15 minutes when we can do it without stopping you. STOP PRESS,HIGHWAYS AGENCY REMOVES A ROAD CLOSURE WITHOUT STOPPING TRAFFIC YET DRIVER STILL COMPLAINS, you guys, honestly
BJ Im hoping you realise how a road closure works, in essence it transfers traffic onto minor roads which in turn slows traffic flow and congests minor routes.
This may come as a shock but in doing this traffic on the route the road closure excists slows and even comes to a stop due to said road closure.
Now as road closures are designed to cause the least disruption it would not be to upsetting to hold traffic while cones are removed when reopening, perhaps even a rolling road block from the previous junction to allow the wombles to work safer and quicker.
Sorry if this is above your paygrade but just an idea to help put safety first which seems to be your climax phrase.
Thinking out the box maybe the matrix signs could be set close to the closure to inform traffic of this.
For a minute there I almost forgot that you were the TO on scene, that you had been complicite in the decision making on that job and that all our rules and procedures were saved as a pdf on your lap top.
Obviously with you having closed motorways and then reopened them far more times than I have, I neglected to realise that you were far more experienced in doing such a task. Of course, yes there were people stuck in the queue that wanted to continue on the motorway but but there were also people who wanted to leave anyway and not really go in the direction the diversion route or onward on the road so by stopping them for longer than necessary would have stopped them for nothing. We don’t just have one way of removing a closure, we don’t just have the Dipper Dave way or the Top Job TN critic driver way. We do what we (collectively) feel is best at the time. For instance, do i need to shut a lane angering truckers and allowing others to have Womble targets or can I move the truck off, steer it onto a French drain or if the flat is on the tractor, disconnect the 2 thus moving the tractor onto the grass, but why am I explaining that to you, you already know me, all TO’s and their thought processes having done the job for so long yourself.
Not like you BJ to ■■■ on the eiderdown of constructive critique…
Anyway it was just a suggestion to improve the safety of poor Uncle Bulgaria left to move the cones. This leads nicely on to wombles running across live lanes, this practice has to stop…rolling road blocks are the way forward and as a trucker im paid by the hour anyway.
The HA needs to stop worrying about delaying standard traffic and preserve the safety of their fluffy family.
I see from your post that you have a collective decision making process which Im not a fan of, as it takes to long. What you need is an absolute leader per section who can make important decisions on the fly.
I also realise you and all the other Womblets do an important and dangerous job but please remember you work for me so I can get my truck from A to B as safely as possible, not neccesarily as quickly though.
Your next lecture will include insight into how speed and safety do not make the best bedfellows. With a side helping of bollox to the traffic theze are my colleagues working on the carriageway.
Wombles don’t (Or shouldn’t) run across lanes. We have had extensive training from some of the most respected Traffic Police with 30 years experience, it takes 4 seconds to cross a lane, we do traffic counts before we go across, we are also allowed to cross and stay in the central res rather than go out and back thus meaning it is safer but of course, you knew that already. We make very quick decisions too and WE make them, not people in offices. Only 1 traffic officer has been tragically killed in over 10 years such is our H and S, training and skills and he died thanks to a car driver who, oh that’s right, didn’t obey the signs that we put up to keep everyone safe, but I suppose if you don’t obey the signs, that can happen. Doesn’t stop people ignoring them as they know better thought hey.
As someone has said already that We need to get our house in order, I think many could do that on here.
It’s funny how you mention we should stop worrying about holding people up and do rolling blocks instead yet we’re always moaned at for holding you up keeping a road closed for a fire that isn’t burning anymore. As I mentioned, there was a driver flpping his arms and gums at me as I was doing 40 through 50 roadworks as his was too dense and blind to see the car in front of me doing 40 also. I bet if I was a fly on the wall I’d hear him moaning about “Those poxy traffic Wombles slowing me down making me 67 seconds late for my delivery”
1 loss of life in 10 years is 1 too many.
I presume this sad incident is the one where a contributory factor was the HA officer not standing the other side of the crash barrier and the car driver percieved a loss of control and overcorrected thus creating an actual loss of control.
Perhaps a freak occurence but rolling road blocks are the way forward and should be used more often.
Any fear of holding traffic up should be a minor concern, apart from emergency vehicles of course.
People love to moan, its the meaning of life for a few.
That’ll be the one however the fact he wasnt behind the barrier is irrelevant really as there are many times I am not there as I am doing my job. The fact is, no one bothered to slow down to the signs as no one had ever considered the fact they may have an issue with their driving or their car or an altercation with another driver at any time as they passed the incident.
No amount of rolling road blocks will stop that and to be fair, we set 50’s for doing them but they re ignored even then, a rolling block is one of the most dangerous things we do and I have heard of fatals in fact caused by a rolling block where a trucker didn’t slow for the 50 or even consider something might be happening and ran into the queue.
I accept your comments but you don’t know a lot about what we do or why we do it and many others on here don’t really care either instead choosing to throw their slurs at us saying we are a waste of time and are all retarded, not nice when we are only trying to help but then again, this is broken Britain.
