Welcome to the forum pal!

My advice is have a look at ROG’S LGV TRAINING TIPS [Reworked 01/02/2022] (Read only) - NEW AND WANNABE DRIVERS (INTERACTIVE) - Trucknet UK training tips.

Other than that, have a look through older threads and questions…

Enjoy!

I can’t turn my back for 5 seconds can I?

Hi Brad

Good luck with your training.
The best thing i found during my class 2 is that everything is slowed down and unrushed. My first day my instructor kept going for the invisible brake pedal
Learning to drive lgvs makes you realise how were all in a rush to get somewhere in our cars.

It’s a good blog, well worth a read.

As a few have said on here already, slow it down. When you think you’re going slow enough, slow down a bit more!! I’ve just passed my class 2 after just 9 hours, I quickly picked up how slow you actually have to go, don’t be afraid of taking your time. Also if you’re lucky enough for somebody to let you pull out or let you go at junctions etc, take your time and don’t rush.

Mirrors, mirrors and mirrors. Your neck should be aching by the time you’ve finished.

Be confident, hold your road position when you can but make sure your not bullying other drivers to let you through.

Good luck

Have you checked out the link in my signature below

Slow is good, you cover less ground and thus have less to ■■■■ up!

Hesitation is only ever a minor, and you have plenty to play with. Where rushing and causing another vehicle to deviate, brake or take evasive action is a major and therefore a fail! So you do the maths!

I’m not talking driving miss daisy, but junctions and busy areas allow you to waste time and get away with it!

You can thank David my instructor for that, who got me through my Class C today. Those weren’t his actual words, just my interpretation!

Hesitation CAN be a serious fault. The important thing is that it’s much easier to get a serious for pulling out on someone (observation) than for hesitation. To get serious hesitation you really need to arrive somewhere and get the flask and sarnies out. Always best to err on the side of hanging about and maybe get a minor hesitation than rush and cop for a serious observation fault.

flask and sarnies out.

Have you got a cheese one? :open_mouth:

Thanks for putting me right Pete! And as I’m sure you knew, it was more the sentiment I was was trying to emphasis…

i.e. None of my minors were hesitation, they were 100% my errors of judgement pure and simple, guilty as charged! Yet I did my best to drive slowly and defensively, trying VERY HARD not to rush anything, but I still got a few things wrong… So I’m suggesting that the candidate slows everything down (except open roads) and wait for the instructor to tell them to pull their finger out and crack on!

I might be wrong, but I’m going to make a guess that one of the main thing you and your instructors initially have to make a candidate realise. They have to reduce cornering speed, and brake a lot earlier, this vehicle is not a car! It was one of my problems/issue! :open_mouth:

P.S. You spoke to me about “unworthy” assessments, and upon reflection I think I had a few of them that didn’t quite amount to a minor, and again it’s probably because I was feeling pressured, rushing things and speed was an issue. Us lads (blokes) never learn!

Also, learn to use the mirrors as they will become your best friends.
