And of course your dad was at Bill Malcys

Malc.

The DAF could have been Micks, but it isn’t very tidy. I will ask Adam.

He was normally polishing the cab in George Cosgroves pub yard

What a fantastic bunch of photographs, takes me back !
Thank you for loading them onto here.FHD708S looks to have just had a respray in that picture.
My memory suggests Hewsons had a later Ford Transconti after the T plate Giltspur liveried pair ( with the blue oval Ford badge on the front ) back in the red and white livery.V reg, but have no photos of that one.Any of you ex Drivers remember that one ?

At which point did it become Bullens? before or after the S or T Transcons?

Jack Hewson was our local councillor and Pete Everingham was the manager. Rex Crebbs was there at the time too

Did Rex Crebbs manage the tyre house next to Hygena, opposite the southways cafe ?

That would be F J Wilson Ltd. I remember there was a Rex there but I never associated the two together

Thanks again JohnnyRose.

Wheelnut, according to Bernard ( and who is to argue with him ! )…Jack and Alf Hewson sold out to Bullens.Pete Everingham went onto the Management side within Bullens and worked his way up.It really used to bug Jack Hewson that the name continued when it was no longer under his ownership.Apparently Bullens had a bit of a poor reputation at this time.

It was Pete Everingham that instigated the F88’s arguing it had to be such if they were going to the continent all the time, in case they broke down, at least they could be serviced and repaired overseas.Bullens were toying to go with and buy AEC’s!

Bullens sold out and Pete Everingham bought Hewson Brothers, the livery changed to the red and white stripes as per the Transconti’s and DAF, the F88’s were changed to the same livery, and the numerous contract colours - Giltspur Transconti’s, Wilson & Co Daf, F88’s in Roto Line livery etc

Eventually they merged with John Harrison with Ellerpack over at Thurnscoe, all went a bit wrong then, but best not repeat the goings on here and sadly it meant the name of Hewson Brothers had to disappear forever.

Hopefully this all is correct, but happy to be corrected.

Thanks Freddie, yes that was the Registration number of the V plate Transconti.Do you know why it was changed into a different colour ?

I should mention per my last post that there was another co-owner with Pete Everingham when they purchased from Bullens and subsequently became involved with Ellerpack.

Brian.
That is interesting. I wonder who did end up with the Hewson Bros name, maybe Mark has it hidden away in a Globepalm filing cabinet. Did George Allinson get it, could it have been “young” Paul Oxtoby? The missing pieces to this mystery could be getting the original diaries from Lal Drury which were published in the Howdenshire Gazette.

Bob Moor who worked at Thompsons of Beverley said there were five DAF 2800 that he did the PDI on. Hewson Bros got two. Humber Kitchens got two and Barry Read took the other one. All the registration numbers followed on consecutively

Johnyrose. Those photos that you put up were the same ones that nivek was promising :stuck_out_tongue: Nivek is Bills (Wes’s) other lad.

Many forget that the Hewson Bros yard was afterwards turned into a cold store and owned by Garden King Frozen Foods before it fell into disrepair. Then a company called Alternative Fuels (Falkinghams) ran their lorries from there and used the cold store as a timber store. It is great to see the place being returned to its transport roots.

It seems like the company Giltspur Bullens still hold a Royal Warrant in Windsor

Looking at the dates on those documents, it seemed that Hewson Bros Ltd actually lasted longer than Ellerpack and Mr Harrison
