One of the first of four Pacific P12 W3 that arrived in South Africa 1973, fitted with a Cummins VTA1710-635 V12 engine. Seen here in S.A.R&H depot in Rooikop parked above rails to conduct a traction test against a locomotive. Strangely these first four were scraped by 1986, yet S.A.R&H ordered a total of 23 Pacific’s in the 1970s.
Henry Frasers first of four OAF VFA 48.700, the rumour is they arrived on off-road tyres in South Africa to pay a much lesser import duty, classed as agriculture equipment instead of a commercial vehicle
ALE Scammell and Nicolas in Richards bay 1985, offloading a stator for Kendal power station. S.A.R&H will transship it onto their Cometto Supra girder frame and take it up the country.
Scammell is ex-Wrekin Roadways WNT 307S, built 1978. Now preserved in Leyland at the British Transport museum

Can anyone let me know how to adjust the quality of the uploaded images?
Hello Robv8
I used a programme called Irfanview - https://www.irfanview.com/
However, when increasing the size, some of the quality and sharpness is lost.
Job from 2023 in Lithuania, a 1528t reactor on 2x22 line Kamag K25/Goldhofer PST. Offloaded in Klaipèda and driven 150km to Mažeikiai
Don’t forget the hydraulic system, and a lot of steel that went into the design, to cope with the strain of different loads.
I don’t think they’ve ever made a more impressing vehicle at ÖAF/MAN than this one! I wonder how many are left? Or are still earning their keep?
Totally agree the 48.700 just oozes power, unfortunately none are still working anymore. But one is for sale that I’m very tempted to buy.
That’ll be destined for the driver of a 700 bhp tractive unit. He’ll need a willy that big to prove he can drive it.
Love the sign on he pump island
Hello John Nice little King Trailer was only 2ft 4in high
If that is the only one of those you had, I am 99% sure pulled it once.
I was driving for Lamberts, and you lent or hired your kit to us sometimes.
With that trailer I was meant to do an internal move inside Fawley Refinery. Only a few hundred metres but it was a large piece of gear and had to go under some overhead pipes. I took it down there, sat for a day, and waited for the crane and riggers to do their stuff.
And waited.
Next day I was sent up the road on general work, and someone else got to go down to Fawley.
Fawley internals was a “nice earner” for we drivers. The on site unions said that anyone doing more than 4hrs work per day would be paid full ESSO rates, to stop temps undercutting the regular staff. So half a day on site meant at least hrs on ESSO pay.
During the cat cracker turnaround when the site was closed for months there was a lot of activity. On a few occasions we would sit all day waiting for a lift and do nowt. Then if needed hand on for a bit longer to do the job. That meant a free meal, and at least 4hrs extra pay at one and a half times the ESSO rate. Sometimes it seemed that the lift was done just after the meal was eaten, and we went off after just one more hour. Tough times.
