"Heavy Haulage through the years"

windrush:

Bewick:
Well Dan’l I will have to defer to your superior knowledge of dossing in a sleeper cab as I can tell you that I never kipped in a sleeper cab and my only experience of doing so was the odd “40 winks” in the D1000 in the days of yore when hours and records didn’t mean much to a young fella !
Oh! and for the record the ratio of Scanias to Volvos in the old Bewick fleet was 4:1 so that is self explanatory ! Cheers Denzil.

From what I read on Facebook etc Scania reliability and build quality isn’t what it used to be and Volvo are now well ahead, shades of how MAN were once the choice for tippers around here but problems with them has seen their number decline now. I guess nothing stays the same?

Pete.

Having driven DAF’s, MAN’s, Merc’s, Scania’s and Volvo’s over the years, Scania is the one I would give a miss, purely based on my experiences on the last one I had, the 3-series was a good motor engine wise, the cab wasn’t really the most spacious money could buy, but they made up for that by introducing the Topline 4-series, my first 4 series was a day cab, than I was moving up the ladder by getting a flat roofed one, and eventually I ended up driving a double drive unit, fitted with the Topline cab, great cab with the bunk above the windscreen, why they changed that when they introduced the R-series is still not clear to me, but going from a fullsize bunk to something even a todler would struggle with wasn’t the smartest move far as I’m concerned.

And then there’s reability… I’ve never driven anything that broke down as much as that R-series. Not to mention driving comfort, it felt like it was designed in the 1930s. So I was hoping Scania learned their lesson, but unfortunately I still hear a lot of negative things about the new range.

One other thing I never understood is the adoration towards Scania by some, why spent so much money on a inferior product I wonder…?

Pure class that

I’ve got a model of a Bowring EC, coupled to a King lowloader, was made by Corgi if I’m not mistaken.

Took me a while to ferret out your remarks amongst all that confusion of quoting, Bewick, but in answer to it I would say that we have seen some of Patrick’s mounts before on here and they are always a credit to him and the companies he has worked for.

Nothing wrong with Dan’s enterprise either. As far as Mike is concerned I applaud his efforts over the years though don’t know him personally but count his Dad as a friend of many years standing.

Well Spardo at least you’ve answered a couple of things for me firstly that “pv83” aka Patrick is a Driver and not an operator so with the best will in the world he is not in a position to criticise in any shape or form the business and operation of MAP ! Secondly while I may have a bit of banter with Dan’l I do have respect for him for being able to coax a living out of his ancient " Foden DAF" but to put it bluntly Dan’l runs one motor as an O/D and Mike Ponsonby runs a pristine fleet of 15 units and 25 trailers so there is no comparison to be had as we are talking “chalk & cheese” ! IMHO MAP is a cracking well run operation and I acknowledge that there will be similar firms in the UK of equivalent calibre but again IMHO there are non better than MAP ! So if you want to question my credentials for passing my opinion on MAP feel free to do so as I believe my almost 30 years as an operator in the industry will stand any amount of scrutiny. Cheers Bewick.

Not getting involved in the spat above, so here’s something different, the little truck that can… don’t see many FMX on Cat 3 work

Punchy Dan:

Mike Ponsonby:
you can go on a tacho offenders list by doing 4.32 mins driving did you not see that mr stobart was the biggest offender do you really think they bend the law

you really have no clue about my buisness or me and im not desperately trying to achieve anything as we are a professional operator and after 19 years on my own i think ive done ok, And i invite anyone to come and take a look at my operation who has there doubts

Anybody with half a brain can see my passion for trucks and haulage apart from the green eyed monsters such as yourself and a few others on here

so i suggest you keep your comments and thoughts to yourself or maybe a PM between yourself and Mr Punchard should keep you both going with your Bitterness

pv83:

Mike Ponsonby:
MR PV83 are you suggesting that my company is not profitable and breaks the law to pay for lightbars ?

No I’m not, although I’m not sure what your business model is…

But being on the tacho offenders list (among others) doesn’t really help the professional appereance you’re desperately trying to achieve, does it?

No green eyes or bitterness here that’s in your head Mike

Same here, as I said earlier, I take my hat off to anyone that decides to venture on their own, whether it’s you who’s got a fleet of 15 units or Dan who’s got at least 3 if I’m not mistaken. It can’t be easy at times, certainly not now with these increasing fuel prices.

And as said earlier, I do have in interest in your fleet, where the trailers are concerned (I did ask several times how the new Faymonville was working out for you, no answers being given yet…), and I would be interested in your opinion about that new XT that your PR manager posted earlier. What I just don’t understand is your sheer adoration for Scania and why you’re willing to spend so much extra money on them, I get it that you’re passionate, as am I about my work, but you don’t get a higher rate by showing up in some blinged up wagon do you? That’s the main reason for taking the mick, and you’re probably not used to any critic being around people who are in that same bubble. So if you can’t stand that you know where the door is (and take that muppet PR manager with you please…)

So, no green eyed monsters on this side of the fence, as I’ve driven Scania’s in the past and I’ve been brought up in the heavy haulage industry and being actively involved in it for quite a while now, I’ve witnessed a lot of operators come and go, who sadly created a race to the bottom…

The thick headed one probably thought I’d be driving a 7.5t rigid Dave, I just reckon he was too busy to notice the units I’ve driven over the years due to his very busy agenda promoting MAP. That or old age kicking in…

Plated for 130, but on ballast we only go 98, only over the 100tonne with a big crawler car body, It has the TP Ishift with the heavy duty option although its rare we need to use it, only used on it one job,so far in the north york moors up 20 and 25% banks

.

Lawrence Dunbar:
I know I’ve posted this a few times, But this is my Grandad Thomas S miles who worked for them up till Nationalisation came about and sadly Curries name just disappeared. And was included into Pickfords who In fact Was the BRS Lot, not to my liking may I add, Larry.0

A great picture Lawrence Dunbar.

The diesel prices at the moment must be adding quite a sum to the monthly/daily fuel bill for transport companies. I’ll maybe stick to a bike for a while…

I was on my way to Sweden this week, and as the Scandinavian countries are expensive on everything, I thought I fill up in Germany… I got 300L for E840…

I was in Switzerland at the weekend and was surprised to find the fuel prices over 35 cents per litre cheaper - not at motorway services of course.

Am I wrong in thinking you’re back behind the wheel again?

That says a lot, as Switserland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe :open_mouth:

The Tatra T813 was a truck produced in Czechoslovakia by the Tatra company. It was produced from 1967 to 1982.[1] The basic representative of this series was a military version of the 8×8 Kolos (Colossus), which was able to pull trailers up to a total weight of 100 tons. Tatra also produced a civilian version in either 6×6 or 4×4. After fifteen years of production, 11,751 vehicles were built in all modifications. Many units were exported to the USSR, East Germany, Romania and India.

Oh Dear Oh Dear it appears that “large powders” have been taken a couple of posts back ! :unamused: Talk about “sticking a pointed stick” in the cage ! :sunglasses: But anyway over the years I was involved in the industry I used to often hear it said by “wanna bee’s” and "Chancers2 that Oh! “I could have run as many motors as you !” “and I could have had all the traffic out of that particular Customer !! etc. etc.” :frowning: What a load of Bollox !So if my Aunt had had Balls She would have been my Uncle eh! never happened
However the previous posts all make for an interesting read and it’s given me an good idea :bulb: following the debacle and upset I appear to have caused I have decided to send my cv to Mike to formally apply to become the MAP PR executive  Top salary , expense a/c , top of the range motor etc etc  On second thoughts Mike might tell me to “Foxtrot Oscar” as he won’t want to offend anyone on TNUK :frowning: Who me ? I wouldn’t upset anyone intentionally ---- would I ? Anon 1.

Yup driving the above FMX, 13 years behind a desk and straight back into it
