"Heavy Haulage through the years"

Hi all I have found a shoe box with some pics you may be interested in.
We did the job in early 2000,it took 7 weeks and it started with the unloading of a 6000 tons of concrete jacketed pipe for a sub sea pipeline off a cargo vessel then transporting it to Onslow a small port 320kms south of Dampier 12 joints at 6tons each 72 tons per road train a trip day until finished.

Cheers Dig

That’s fascinating Dig, so the job paid enough for you to run a little further north before or after tipping then?

Was that because it was the best place with the best deal, or aren’t there any others further south?

Hi David
The company we all subcontracted to had depots in Perth and all the major supply bases and ports in the north of Australia, we ran regularly from Perth to the Dampier Supply base which serviced the offshore oil and gas exploration and production platforms of the North West Shelf.
Our company had a contract with the oil company which laid the pipeline and so 4 of us were asked to supply units to do the job some weeks before it happened as it meant being away from home for a couple of months that included loading to Dampier from Perth and then loading back to Perth after the job finished.
I was away for just under 9 weeks,we had 2 days off during the job and I was glad to get home as they picked the hottest time of the year to do the job.

Cheers Dig

Cracking stuff once again everyone, cheers for keeping the thread going!

Interesting batch of pictures! I guess the driver of the first truck mustn’t have felt very proud when his boss arrived on the spot…

Some blasts from the past for me there, especially Starr Roadways from whom I often got reloads when I was roaming in the 70s. I nearly said backloads, but that wouldn’t be true, left to our own devices we would load to anywhere in the country if the rate was right (we were on hours + percentage and some hauliers had to be persuaded to tell us the rate) and the destination was good for the next load.

So Starr, only 50 odd miles from base at Nottingham, would often load me for Scotch or S.Wales for instance. When work was a bit slack at Stanton Iron and Concrete I once used the boss’s phone to get a load from Derby to Edinburgh.

Hi Patrick, couple to be going on with, one or two more when sorted.
