Health & Safety.

Talking to another agency driver at my place today. I said “What do we do about washing the truck?” and he said “There’s a jet wash in the corner of the yard but we’re not allowed to use it because we haven’t been trained on it”. :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

Not allowed to use the goods lift at my current work unless you’ve been trained on it. Pull handle one way to go down, the other to go up. Not rocket science.

You of all people should understand this having been an operator your self ,it’s only an arse covering excersise, I’d guess if the pressure pipe burst and shot you in the eye with Tfr and it turned out you’d not been trained then you’d be crying compo and the company for the high jump .

To some extent I understand this, but it is just indicative of how mad the Health & Safety culture has become, because I have been washing trucks with a jet wash for over 30 years now, so I think my experience counts as “training”.

Still, if they want their truck to go out on Monday looking filthy rather than pristine, then that really isn’t my problem. I just do whatever I am told to do and scarper at the end of the week with the money.

I’m staff and we don’t have that luxury apart from a brush and bucket for the windows . Crack on

What is totally ridiculous about this, is the fact that you can drive to any petrol station in the country and wash your car with the pressure washer you pay them to use. Where is the H&S policy there, is their pressure washer a safer one to use? Do they need to train you to use it, no of course not because they will have had no accidents with anyone using one. It is complete and utter rubbish half of H&S in companies nowadays.

It’s not the same thing at all. When you wash your car, you are making a choice to do that, and probably ignore the sign that says that you are doing it at your own risk. At work, you are being paid to do it, and your employer has to take responsibility for anything that happens.

If you mess around at a public car wash, squirt your mate and blind him, only you are responsible. If you do it at work and were not trained properly, with warnings about misuse, your employer could be held liable.

So you have to be trained now to not squirt your mate in the eye with a jet wash, Jesus what is it all coming to.

You obviously don’t remember the guy who took Herons for a load of cash. Because they didn’t have a record of telling him not to put his foot in he taillift’s crush zone, they were liable.
H&S is needed because common sense is not terribly common. Plus, everything is always someone else’s fault.

UK H&S bollox strikes again.

What’s all this ■■■■■■■■ about “no rigger boots” aswell.
What could be a better choice of footwear for working in shin deep mud?

That is what H&S is all about I am afraid, it is about liability and insurance and has nothing to do with the safety of people, they pick and choose whatever they see as a claim and not as a hazard. I fell off some ladders whilst fixing a reefer a few years back, snapped my leg in half, had pins and plates fitted and it was deemed my fault as I didn’t have 3 points of contact on the ladder, any engineer will tell you that is impossible to achieve whist trying to do a job. I can give thousands of instances of much more dangerous activities than merely using a jet wash. Do you need training for absolutely everything that could be a hazard?

Best H&S sign ever, must be if Carlsberg did H&S. I would like to go back to the days when H&S was just that, common sense.

They don’t offer enough ankle support

We’re now not allowed to operate a scissor lift having done so for years. There’s 2 buttons, one for up and another one but I forget what it’s for.
It’s now deemed that we’re not trained to use this complex piece of equipment.

I’m sure most of use can manage that without a risk assessment

One time back in our yard it was a swelteringly hot day and I got me chum to hose me down with the jetwash.
Stood in the middle of the washing bay in just boots, pants and me hi viz best and let the cool water sooth my overheating firm body.
Very ■■■■■■■■■■ if I’m honest.

Some squealer grassed me up though and I’m now banned from using the jetwash. Apparently this was a breach of the companies Safe Systems of Work as well as a public decency offense. ■■■■■■■…
