I can assure you as a driver , you can’t go far wrong with peckover.
The trouble with people , is they think they can turn up using the company as a stepping stone or starter, smash the tackle to bits then move on.
I have worked there for years and after working for several companies have found peckover treat you great, you make more than most per month, have new trucks and trailers and are treated equally.
As for paying access. Don’t keep smashing things up!!
I know we all have scrapes now and again but some drivers are just not cut out for class 1 driving.
I have seen many drivers ( from many companies) who I wouldn’t let loose with a shopping trolly!
All I’m trying to say is, don’t knock peckover untill you try it guys. If your a good driver you are welcome here. If your a poor driver or Schumacher wannabe stay away or be prepared to pay the access after you have had several accidents.
If this new firm is paying for a hotel i presume the cab is a day cab and not fitted with any bunk to sleep in.
If it does have a bunk, i can not see any firm paying money for a hotel too.And pay night out money plus the hotel everynight.
What happens when there is no hotel nearby and you are out of hours?

A rather interesting first post…
I would be surprised if you drive for this outfit,
perhaps you work in the traffic office?

Are you sure??
You’re not your. Excess not access. No way that’s an office wallah they’re far more intelligent than us mere drivers and wouldn’t make such mistakes.

Gijays, I’m not sure where you get the idea that Peckover Transport treats everyone equally. If they do, it’s far from in a good way. Peckover Transport has some good merits, but I’m afraid most of it’s ideas are negative.
I’d recommend them to anybody needing their first couple of years experience, but not so much for an experienced driver. I’d been driving artics for 5 years, tramping in and out of London when I joined Peckovers, but they treated me like I’d had my licence for 2 minutes, and was almost a week before I’d even got to touch a wagon. The hours would change from a day shift to a night shift, and vice versa at the click of the TM’s fingers. The drivers were nothing more than an underpaid, permanent agency driver - the hours changed that much!
Then there’s the office staff. I’m quite sure they used to put bets on to see who’d get told to ■■■■ off first by each and every single one of them making a phone call asking how you’re getting on, but only 5 minutes apart.
Last time I heard, not so long back, they were even expecting the drivers to cough up for the waiting time if they didn’t call the office every 20 minutes while being delayed at delivery/collection points.
As far as paying the insurance excess is concerned, I’m not someone to bicker about that. I understand why, and I feel if drivers did the job properly then they wouldn’t be left with a rather hefty bill for the damage they caused. But, having said that, the over-manned office (there was 4 TM’s for less than 20 trucks when I was there), feel it is more than necessary to chase the drivers something stupid. I once pulled into a cafe to grab a sandwich so I could go and join the queue at one of their contract sites. I’d been working for almost 6 hours, so was requiring a break anyways, and thought I’d have my break while sat in the queue (which we often did). I hadn’t even got over the first step on my way into the cafe when one of the TM’s was straight on the blower to me asking “what the ■■■■ do you think you’re doing stopping at the cafe?”. Well, he got quite a response he wasn’t expecting.
Also, abuse and swearing at the drivers seemed common place if you didn’t do exactly what they were expecting. The place was an absolute sham then, and of what I’m made to believe, it’s still an utter sham now.
So, Gijays, you can keep working for your beloved Peckovers. I did what I felt needed to be done and told them to ‘PECK-OFF’ years ago.
Gijays i think rebus just put you well and truely in your place there BOOM

Gijays has gone a deathly shade of quiet hasn’t he?

Heh heh, I was probably a little harsh, but I think I know who Gijays may actually be, and if I’m correct, they are just trying to change the reputation that Peckovers have. Of course, they should be focusing on changing things from the inside rather than people’s perceptions from the outside. More to the point, if Gijays is the person I think it is then they are the only one who can change things.
So I’m getting the impression that Peckover might be one for the avoid list then
Tipper Tom:

As I said, it does have some merits, but only for the right people. It’s over 3 years since I worked there, but of the people I know that are still there, only a few things have changed. It’s fairly clean work, and they don’t expect you to run bent (although they do expect you run to the absolute max one day, then will stand you down after 3 hours the following day). The pay is slightly better than it was I believe, and the overtime pay is rather good - but it’s not something you’ll get much of unless they’re seriously busy.
They also have one of the highest turnover of drivers I’ve ever seen. I’ll put it this way, I left after only 6 months for a lower hourly pay to work for a cowboy. My time with the cowboy was far simpler and much easier in the fact I was allowed to just get on with the job.
A jar of vaseline is handy if you want to stay at Peckovers.
If you are the sort who likes to sprinkle sand in other peoples
vaseline you won’t last long there.
And after Gijays posting extolling the virtues of the place,
I expected to see an advert for drivers required in the local
paper tonight, but was disappointed.
Absolutely priceless!
7 quid an hour, max hours (otherwise you don’t make a living) and then say they’re great!!!
Hmmm. The conclusion I would draw is that i wouldn’t work for Peckover for a very big clock!!!
Sorry guys, not been on the site since my first post. I’m not trying to defend any company. I’m only a class one driver myself and can assure you I ain’t no office prick.
I have worked for a few company’s and agree with most things said here.
It is true about the turnover but even I can see half the drivers we have now are utter s##t!
The pay is as good now as any and I’m out 5 nights sometimes 6.
The office has had a full revamp and I can assure you no one rings you and ■■■■■■ you off any more.
It’s a good place to work but like any company has its ups and downs. All I’m saying is don’t knock it till you try it. I’m happy to answer any questions and I have nothing to win or lose , so please fire away if you want to hear it from the horses mouth.
Cheers and drive safe . Merry Christmas
Also £7 per hour■■? I’m guessing your talking about 7.5 tonne then??

Time and half after 45 hrs and sat/sun
It’s probably not the best but its ok.
I am not sure about class 2 .
Hope this helps
Thanks, just like to keep up to date with what locals are paying.

Sounds like a Billy-■■■■■■■■■■■ to me. The reason that there’s such a high turn over of drivers is mainly due to the way in which management treat their staff.
6 nights out? That would suggest that you did a day stood down waiting for work. I heard about a lad called Marius doing a day stood down with no work, left in the wagon all day in Scotland. It turns out that management felt there was no need to pay young Marius as he “wasn’t working that day”. Well, actually, he was working. He was being a security guard for a wagon parked up miles away from home. It’s these ridiculous ideas that the management have that end up with decent drivers avoiding the company like a plague.
Peckover transport where do you want to start?.I started with the company feb2010 and left in sept2013 having both good and bad times with the company.Nov2011 i was asked if i would like to do a driving assessor course with the Institute of Advanced Motorists which i did myself and another driver so becoming the inhouse assessor’s.The work done by the company is for pound retail stores, food packaging companies and printer’s so all good clean work covering the 4 corner’s of the UK.Pay well when i was there it worked out at £8 for 45hrs £12 after that they stop 45mins for your break.Yes when it’s busy they will run your leg’s off wanting you to work weekends every hour you got! when it’s not busy now thats adifferent matter will bring you in for 7hrs one day 9hrs next then next day ask you to ring in at 10am then again at 11,12 only to be told after spending half the day waiting theres nothing for you! Then you’ll get a call from the office around 4pm wanting you in at 2am and your next 2 days will be 15hrs with a nightout(which are £25).Sat/Sun are paid at £12 per hr but if you work passed midnight sunday into monday you will be put back on £8 per hr.The story about Marius is ture 27hrs parked on Bellshill ind est he got an extra nightout paid £25 which works out about 92p an hour!!!.If you have a crash the excess is £500 also if you break anything lights mirrors stepps rip a curtain you’ll have that to pay for like i said break anything you’re going to pay!!As for how they talk to drivers it depends on if your face fits or if they think your pulling your weight, you’ll soon know phone will be ringing if it don’t.Could go on but think i said enough for now but any questions feel free to ask.
