And would we get any thanks from joe public? would we hell! Let em suffer for a bit, then may be they will start to apreciate us a bit more.

Id agree with this, normally we
re the scum of the earth, if i recall correctly a government minister was blaming jacknifed lorries for all the delays on the radio the other day so why now should we be expected to work even harder and still be treated like something they`ve stepped in - park it up i say
And all because 15hrs isnt enough,

If we did it isn,t that we would be more appreciated, we would just be considered a bit more of a “neccessary evil”. Don,t fall into the trap, remember all the stick we normally get… let them go and ■■■■ themselves
We ran out of diesel on Wednesday still not had a delivery, been filling up at the local. Further north you go the supermarkets have ran out of bread , milk. Speaking to a tesco lad in forfar he said people where panic buying.
panic buying over a bit of snow, get a grip ya numpties
I think this whole “extended hours” thing shouldn’t be allowed as the companies are using it in the wrong way! I agree with the principal of extending hours…so drivers can get A delivery done AND THEN get home…but companies are taking the wee wee! I’m watching the news at the moment like a fair few people on here and all this relaxed hours is being used for is to allow companies to save money.
Classic example…one of the trips that we do is a delivery to a store, take dirty crates and cages to another place, drive somewhere else and pick stuff up to return back to the depot…usually takes 12-13 hours. With this relaxed hours things companies will still send drivers out doing this same run, knowing it may take 16-17 hours, but as they’re supermarkets they’re allowed to do it…wouldn’t it be better if the the collection was a separate journey and all the first driver has to do is do his first delivery and get rid of the dirty stuff? But no…this relaxation will be abused so the companies can save money on hiring more agency drivers and hiring out more units and trailers needed if they split journeys up.
Wonderful!
all the publicity about “tired” drivers killing innocent motorists, all the legislation put in place to restrict our working time, all the health & safety Bulls**T we have to put up with, and a few days snow throws everything out the window.
I can see next week me delivering “essential supplies” of flat pack furniture, magazines, easter eggs, cardboard packaging and plasterboard, and having to drive 10 hours every day, “because I can”

To some people, these are “essential supplies”, that is why they go out on Sundays to buy them. These days every “must have”, must be today.
After the move was confirmed, Mr Stevenson said: "The whole logistics chain will have the opportunity to work longer hours, take a bit less rest, provided their managers think that’s the safe thing to do.
A BIT LESS REST■■?
stuff it ! let the public suffer ( me included )
Makes my blood boil , all year round , it’s all we can do to try and stay legal , as soon as folk realise they cant get a paper and a pint of milk from the shop it’s ok to relax the friggin rules !!
Unbelieveable
It looks to me if I am correct, that we can now drive an extra 4 hours a week?
I have never really fully understood the HGV drivers hours, how is it that we need to take only 30 mins
rest after 6 hours of other work - for example shovelling snow in the freezing cold, but if we are sat on our collective arses looking out of the windows and listening to the radio whilst driving somewhere in a nice warm cab for only 4 1/2 hours we must take 45 mins rest?
Also I seem to remember from my PSV days we could drive for 5 hours before a break was needed
and work something like 9 consecutive days, while carrying 90+ passengers.
The whole job is up it’s own arse.

No, ten hours per day driving will be allowed for the next 4 days only. For some drivers that might only mean 1 extra hour available over those days, because anyone who hasn’t used their 10 for this week, or just used 1 of them could legally do 10 hours Sunday, Monday and Tuesday or Wednesday anyway. Drivers who have already used their two extended driving days this week will be able to drive a maximum of 2 more hours over those 4 days.
and in 3 or 4 weeks time try and explain it to the BAG or the nice Gendarmerie

Mr Stevenson is a trumpet as there is nothing in the relaxed rules for all LGV drivers about less rest. The 13/15 hour limits don’t seem to have been changed and only 1 extra driving hour per day for the next 4 days. Many drivers working for the supply chain who work 4 on, 4 off type shifts could likely have done that on three of those days anyway.

Ah! Right!
An extra hour’s driving on my anticipated 2 or 3 shifts next week won’t make much impression on
the country’s state of affairs.
The politicians might get some brownie points off someone but it’s starting to thaw round here anyway.

Asda, Tesco and other supermarket drivers are unlikely to encounter representatives from either of these groups during their shift.
Anyone else who may have dealings with them could just carry a printout of the announcement.

Exactly. However, the key point here is the Good Old British Public, who know nothing about driver’s hours regulations other than what the Daily Mail tells them when they run another Killer Juggernauts or Dangerous Foreign Lorry Driver’s story, won’t know it is just one measly hour and think the Government are actually doing more than they are and supplies will be flooding into the shops and forecourts.
In fact driver’s on this thread who do, or should know, about driver’s hours have been posting about working longer hours due to this, coupled with a bit of general dummy spitting. So, if they are buying into it so easily the GOBP will have no problems swallowing it.
Just seen this on the BBC, has anyone else heard anything about it?
How do we drivers “officially” hear of these things? if it turned out to be incorrect and we got stopped by McAngus quoting “I heard it on the news” is that good enough?
The government has temporarily relaxed the legal restrictions on the length of time lorry drivers can work to help ease the backlog caused by snow.
Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said allowing hauliers to drive for an extra hour a day for the next four days would help deliveries of “vital supplies”.
Announcing the temporary driving relaxation - which has increased the daily driving limit from nine to 10 hours - Mr Hammond said: "During these exceptional conditions we must do everything we can to keep Britain moving.
“That is why I have authorised a temporary relaxation of drivers’ hours and working time rules for all HGV drivers over the next four days. This will ensure that vital supplies get to their destination on time.”
Anyone got a better, verifiable, source?
Alex
[EDIT]
I see its on roadtransport.com so I’m obviously a day late with this, mods delete if its already been done to death!
if my boss told me that the rules were relaxed to get goods around I would tell him to go make love to himself. 15 hours is probably too much.
