Hard shoulder mugging

Car drivers being robbed has been happening for years in Eastern Spain.
Even car hire tourists were targeted by seeing the hire firm sticker.
Gangs flag down camper vans, caravans and cars indicating a fire or flat tyre.
You stop to get out and get robbed while an accomplice takes your valuables.
In the UK, the gold ring con is common.
A man is waving you down, while stood by his car that has ran out of fuel.
You take him to the garage to get fuel, he has no means to pay you, so gives you fake jewellery.

M50 poor unfortunate was Marie Wilkes. Iirc a doorman from South Wales was convicted of her murder.

Fair play lads.

I make a point of having a phone number for the ‘office’ when working, some companies give me a sheet with recovery company details etc. If it was an emergency then I’d use 999. In my personal car, it would break down or again would be emergency services/101.

I’d rather use my mobile from a verge in the car - or from driver’s seat in the truck. It’s never been needed for either a car or a truck so far. But the idea of my wondering down the hard shoulder on foot isn’t something that appeals.

You sound like the kids from college last year. How do you think we survived before mobile phones?

More support for my theory that knowledge does not replace experience or common sense. Evidently this theory extends beyond university lecturers (and I have a few belters)

all my life,my instinct would be to stop and assist if i saw a woman broken down.
nowadays id never stop unless is was some geriatric old twaddler or something completely mental in circumstances,as you wouldnt know what to expect reactionwise from said stranded female.
they wanted equality so they have it now and it could led to grief approaching the wrong wifey if your in the middle of nowhere.
over in ireland its a different story as the way of life is somewhat more laid back.
i still automatically hold doors open for women and suchlike but at the same time my brain is calculating whether i keep it open for them depending on my perspective of them.

You’ve summed up my approach too. I’m exactly the same for the same reasons.

The recommendation if broken down on the motorway is to use the SOS phone . This gives that control room for that section of motorway an exact location for you .
Even doing a 999 call from your mobile doesn’t always connect you to the emergency control in the local area , then you have to pinpoint the location. Many won’t know which junction they had last passed and very often get the direction of travel wrong .
Many control rooms taking 999 calls don’t know the how the post numbering system at the side of the motorway works .
As for a three figure sum of cash , £101 is a three figure sum , not an unusual amount of money to be carrying .
I hope they catch the scum , but I won’t hold my breath.

So Conor, you are telling us all that CCTV cameras on the A74(M) are only around Glasgow, really ■■?

using your mobile on the motorway is a waste of time unless you know exactly where you are and so does the person at the other end, the motorway phones pinpoint you to within 1/2mile max, and as for the three figure sum might be £100 ive usually got more than that on me at any one time, I know some people cant raise that amount but its not a great sum, especially if your travelling some distance on the motorway, quite often the card machines are not working so no fuel or food. think ahead and not just the one on your pint.

Lucky girl she could have been in the boot of the bad guys car never to be seen again!

My missus has said she would just keep driving whilst on the hard shoulder and sod the damage to the car.

I hope you told her that’s a terrible idea.

Might have been pxxxxs, probably didn’t have any luck robbing an old age pensioner, then chanced upon this lady, wouldn’t surprise me

I was told by my latest cpc instructor to use 112 instead of 999 as this helps to pinpoint more precisely where the caller is located.

Only works if the system is set up for tracking / gps positioning , not all areas even have it .

Im not sure how far apart the sos phones are in the UK now but even if no attention has been paid as to which junction you’ve just passed the post marker number will give the exact location surely without having to walk to the nxt sos phone…unless youre within sight of one or actually broken down next to one that is…

That would make too much sense.

I stopped and phoned in a crash (the driver was fine, and had got his car onto the shoulder but there was spilled diesel all over the wet road) at the top of the M6 before xmas, I didn’t really know where I was as I was driving a regular run on autopilot at silly o’clock in the morning. When I read off the mile marker to the 112 operator, they had no idea how to look it up, so I had to do a quick google map to find out how far south of the previous junction it was.

^^^^^^^^^^
all the markers have arrows under the numbers pointing you in the direction of the nearest one so you dont need to be walking anymore than required though prob theres plenty wouldnt see them.
anytime ive greif then its either a crash stop or a freewheel for as long as poss to save my wee legs.
id never phone highways and would always be using the fixed phone pole. the mobile would be for phoning everyone else.
the report said the robber was white…itl be interesting to see who he actually is if they catch him.
just a scumbag no matter who he is though, similar to the junkies and pondlife that rob pensioners.
