£60.FIX PEN. even with a home made plate still same £60
iirc, think it’s £30 for, no plate, wrong type of plate (silver on black etc) etc, but it’s £30 fine for not having a no-plate, i know about that one as my boss got pulled up for not having a plate on his jetski trailer.
by the way no not mention the following words “cardboard number plate”

And 17 pages of argument and discussion on these forums.
You will probably incur the wrath of Jase who will want to chase you up the embankment in his HATO Mobile and have you on a gibbet before sunrise
I think it was 30 quid after my FPN in Coalville
Merc0447’s top tip unscrew your back unit plate and use it on the trailer
Obviously it wont fit in the brackets but use your noggin to get it secure.
I’ve always knocked up a cardboard one with a marker pen. If the scum pulled me for it and gave me a FPN I’d refuse it and tell them to forward it to the court. I would bet a very large sum of money that when explaining your predicament and reasons to the court that the case would get thrown out and you’d go free. It’s not like you’re deliberately trying to evade the law. For whatever reason the plate has gone walkabout and you’re stuck x miles from base without one and of course unable to get one knocked up without the V5. I think even the most stupid magistrate would be able to see the common sense ‘approach’ used to make the best of a bad situation.

but then you’d loose a days money going to court…

I have been giving that advice on here for years, it’s amazing the number of drivers that forget every unit has a spare on the back.

Unless the law’s changed or he’s very lucky I think he’d still get done for not displaying the rear number plate on the unit so sorry, he’s as bad burned as scalded. My husband was in exactly the same situation and got a fine.

What “law” is this you’re referring to? Please provide a link. I think you’ve just made that up tbh . A hooked up trailer becomes part of the vehicle so the rear of the vehicle then becomes the rear of the trailer and the law states that a vehicle (other than a bike) must display front and rear reg plates, therefore no reg plate is needed on the rear of the tractor unit if there is one on the rear of the trailer.
It must have been nicked when I stopped at the services.
I once drove a rigid from the north east to worthing without a rear numberplate, i didn’t even know it was missing until the next morning as i was opening the doors just as i was about to pull on a bay and tip, lol, i found a local garage who made one up, it wasn’t a proper (square ) one but i secured it with a couple of cable ties with hindsight i wish i had know before i got to worthing, plenty of speed cameras, lol
The law says you must display a plate on the front and the back.
If you took the plate off the unit and put it on the trailer, you would be complying with the law, however under construction and use regulations you would be breaking the law and end up with a £30 fine for not having the plate on the back of the unit. basically, if its meant to be there and its not, you can get done.

I trust this clarifies matters.
You need a plate at the front of the vehicle and the rear of the vehicle, no law says you must have one somewhere in the middle of the vehicle. A unit pulling a trailer is one vehicle so front and back it is.
If you husband told you he got a fine I think he must have spent the money on something else and needed a story to tell you to cover the shortfall.
