Derek wasn’t it?
Any relation to Tony Hayward?
Hi Gazza
Yes it is Derek, use to run with Rawlings now and again.
I don’t think there is a connection between Tony Hayward.
Ah! Thats the connection “T”, we crossed paths when shipping Southampton/Pompey for Rawlings…didnt Sturge/Hayward use their shipping account? We always used to say “Derek off of Sturge’s” to differentiate from Derek who worked for Rawlings.
Hi Gazza,
Yes i think they did, i know he use to run with Rawlings a fair bit.
In the Xmas party picture of Rawling’s i can just make out my Dad, bloke on the left with a ■■■ in his hand and blonde’ish hair.
A few more i found.
Can one of you Gents tell me where and what this is please? Take it in the school hol’s many years ago
The picture above is of the Monument to the dead of Resistance Val d’Enfer at the top of the cerdon on the national 84 in Eastern France. It’s on the old road used to get to Italy, between Pont-d-ain and Nantua. I don’t think you can go up this road as there is a new bypass.
Built in the wild gorge of the Val d’Enfer, the monument of Resistance of Ain and Haut-Jura surprised all who travel on this important channel of communication. This work, due to the initiative of Colonel Roman Petit, head of scrub of the Ain, was carved by Charles Machet this site chosen by the leaders of the resistance because of abuses committed Kelso, a clash seriously inflicted on the enemy troops in this sector in July 1944, in order to integrate this project in symbiosis with a virgin nature.
How is your father Derek, I remember him well from when Haywards used to do a lot of work to Swiss and Italy.
Thank you for the information Incognito. My dad is fine thanks still driving abroad. If you don’t mind me asking who did you use to drive for?
Hello there please give my regards to your Dad and ask him if he remembers doing the dance of death on a Rawlings permit outside Peters in Verona.
Also does he remeber being in Cuneo and winning the toss for the the load of the day and leaving Ian of Rawlings sitting for another 2 days waiting for a load.
I still have the doll with the pins stuck in it

Hi Traniht,
Just spoke to my Dad he sends his regards( he just waiting to catch the ferry from Dover) he said he can’t remember doing the " Dance of Death" but does remember getting the back load over you, but he did recall the night Derek Obey went missing in Verona and was found under a sheet with his load of skins.( if i got the story right)
I worked at HS Hayward (Transport) Limited for 9 years 1980 - 89, but ‘deskside’.
A chance message from Tim, drew my to the site and more particularly to this Haywards Page.
I am delighted to see the pictures, these have evoked super memories of my time at Heath Hill.
A couple of comments on the discussion threads…
Firstly, to say that LOK 289X was an early Volvo 4 to 6x2 conversaion, undertaken at Hartshornes, Walsall. it had a 240 engine, which was probably a little underpowered, but still did a good job in the hands of class A1 drivers.
Secondly, Tony Hayward I recall as no relative to the family, and as the photo stays pulled trailers for Beresford. However ,Tony did pull HSH trailers for a short time I cannot recall when/why.
Thirdly, the HSH and Rawlings link was very strong, and loved to read the ‘skins’ reference in the ASR page. ‘Wet Salted Cow Hides’, great. I’ve huge respect for the guys who were prepared to tranship the skins into Fridges, off flats and tilts loaded at Connollys at Lampeter, at Heath Hill, the purpose being to take advantage of loading high paying peaches from Italy.
Forthly, WE Refrigeration Ltd was an business aquired for it’s permits, from the owners ok Keltrucks in the West Midlands, and the original operating name was Westmid European…
For the ASR chaps. What happened to Harry Haywards (RIP) car - A500XUX David bought it as a ‘new pin’ it following Harry’s very sad death, and I seem to remember news filtering back that it was fast becoming of lesser condition.
Thank you Tim for introducing me to the site, and if you chaps don’t mind I’d like to stay in the threads for this page.
Anyone know what happened to Colin Cheshire? Last I heard (mid nineties) he was owning or running a taxi company in Shrewsbury.
Also, Roy Jones, Mick Ondrak, Rob Richards, Eric Bond, Tony Maiden amongst many others, where are you now?
Best regards
DP
With ref to David Rawlings purchasing the car was this a Volvo if so it was the first of many none of which were cherished.
Sadly David died of a heartattack in the early nineties and Jim Continued to run the buisness along with Melvin until comparitivally recently.
Im led to beleive that Melvin still runs a few trucks belonging to Kevin Rawlings and a few other suubies

I heard that Colin Cheshire had passed away about two years ago and Roy Jones was last known working for Roy Harris in Oswestry.
in the mid eighties, Truck mag’ did a truck in service piece which included our (HSH) F7. I was interviewed for the editorial but stupidly did not keep a copy.
Would love to get hold of a copy.
Also, I suppose it is inevitable that you experience a real mix of emotions when reading through the threads of this super forum. Overall I am greatly enjoying it.
Particular the HSH and ASR pages.
Any of the ASR chaps recall me, as part of ‘deskside’ apprenticeship going over a few times to experience the ‘roadside’ aspects. I was 17, Tim’s dad Derek took me to Italy. Night two we stopped at Borg-En-Bresse, and in a lively group, was encouraged to get absolutely wasted on wine. Derek I remember, was careful to remind me not to mix my prefered white, with anything else that night. Anyway, I ignored the advice, and drank the very last of the red (half a cup full at the most). Subsequently Derek refused me back in to the truck that night, booking me in to a room at the cafe/hotel. I left the hotel room the next mornig in a sea of red. Good decision Derek. Later on the trip, we passed an ASR motor seemingly and quite literally abandoned in the middle of the autostrada, the drvers door was ajar. Both concerned we were later told its OK, it was only … so and so, sleeping off the booze. I’ve kept a confidence, to this day, despite being in constant touch with the ASR management team at the time. That’s 27 years ago, so I guess it’s OK to share.
Great days, and great memories.

Well it wernt me I would put me money on Polly or Derek Obee.
