You sure did “ND888 BIG J” There are shots on the site of 8LXB engines in Atkinsons,Seddon 32/4’s,ERF “A” Series,“B” Series,Sed/Atks and Ooo! even Foden
But Big J’s— a big fat Zilch,Non,Zero,“O”,I honestly can’t believe this state of affairs still exist,I’d happily eat a big helping helping of “humble” just to clap my eyes on one of the elusive “beasties”,I bet James and Alexander are turning in their graves at this state of affairs, and Fergie is no help as he’d jacked in at SOM before these (alleged) Big J’s appeared on the fleet
We can only live in hope from now on although I do believe they have more chance of finding that airliner in the Southern ocean than an SOM 8LXB Big J
Cheers Dennis.

0Now I wonder which engine this Big J has,though it won’t be the 8LXB for sure.Bewick.
A 180 Gardner or a ■■■■■■■ perhaps, Defo not a Gardner 8 potter IMO, Regards Larry.
Would be the ■■■■■■■ 180 or were they still fitting the V6 ■■■■■■■ at that time in 67/68 Larry? Cheers Dennis.
Whatever it is,its not very powerful.
Its being overtaken by a pushbike.
The pushbike belongs to SoM, powered by…
When I lived in Faversham, Kent, in the '70s, BOC / Transhield / Marks & Sparks ran about 80 of these Guy Big-Js out the cold-store in Oare. I remember chatting to one of the drivers of these in the mid-70s in a Faversham pub and he told me that the Guys were so slow climbing the A2 up through the Medway Valley that he used to cut a hole in his newspaper each morning so that he could read it and see where he was going! Their last batch were, I understand, a cancelled export order and ended up on S-plates, way after any Guy could ever be on S-plates. One of them ended up as a yard-shunter for A&RJ Wood in Teynham, near Sittingbourne; and I did some shunting with it during Easter 1984. It had a Gardner 180, David Brown 6-speed constant-mesh 'box and no power-steering. Here is a picture of it, just after I’d parked it up! Robert

Yes Dennis i have seen shots of every other chassis with a 8 pot gardner but believe me i am still searching. Its deffo not on the internet its stashed in a box in an attic. But it will emerge. Like i said before the old man can remember this waggon like it was yesterday. I remember him coming home throwing his rattle oot the pram when it was to be upgraded to an ERF B series with a ■■■■■■■ engine. Never mind the humble pie Dennis im in the Swan in Grassmere every sunday monday night most of the tourist season. You can pass by and buy me a pint

Well done, Keith. You win this week’s star prize, a weekend for two at one of the cramped brick boxes that some idiot property developer has knocked up on the site.

Hi ROF , i feel actually quite at home in one already !! Only kidding , but that yard did contain some interesting stuff . Was it a sub depot of Gloucester , or a S Wales depot . regards Keith .
Hi, Keith, Forest of Dean Depot, to give it the official title was a member of South Wales Group, hence the “G” in the depot code of GP. I can’t remember the fleet number of my first vehicle as I threw it back after just one day. It was an old Leyland Octopus that, along with about three others, had been chopped down to make an artic unit. 38mph, cold (no heater) and uncomfortable, it was not the sort of tool to inspire a 21-year-old potential King of the Road!
My second lorry was a different kettle of fish- AEC Mercury artic with tweaked rotary pump and 6-speed AEC gearbox. I really enjoyed covering the length and breadth of the UK with just about every kind of goods on either a tipping trailer (ex James Smith, single axle, Ford Eight donkey engine) or a 40 foot tandem flat at 24 tons. This was GP53, reg. ADG611B.
Next came the Guy Big J in the b&w photo, a real flying machine (after a tweak by Guy Motors at North Woolwich) issued to me brand new as GP109, reg. MUH472F which lasted me until I got married and moved to a new life by the sea in Pembrokeshire.
On my return a couple of years later, disillusioned with the poor wages on offer in West Wales, I took over GP114, a Big J which had been on the Wall’s ice cream contract in Gloucester and, along with two or three more, continued in it’s light blue livery
As you say, the yard contained a host of interesting stuff, due to the remains of the inherited George Read and James Smith fleets, including some odd bits of plant.
Hope my ramblings have been of interest although all this probably belongs on the Forest of Dean or BRS threads!
don’t know if these pics have been posted before but they where given to me as a kid by someone who worked at guy motors
