Brian, that’s brilliant. I’d say its Dennis on the left, ROF in the centre and Larry on the right. There’s a shadow in the background, that must be Harry and Dave the Renegade is looking down from above, scolding them all for being doubter’s.

Paul

Not sure that I’d want to be placed between those two- they’re NORTHERNERS and therefore genetically programmed to disbelieve anything claimed by those South of Birmingham. I’m sending young Lurpak on a recce in consideration of doing a swop after the Scottish vote: Any two Northern counties in return for a decent part of Scotland. Preferably the bits where the whiskey’s distilled and the oil pipeline comes ashore. I’m looking forward to seeing Bewick and Larry trundling up the A9 in a Pickford’s van containing the furniture, closely followed by twenty Securicor vans with their private pensions!

Well anywhere would be an improvement on a sod hut in The Forrest ROF !

Dennis all this talk of whiskey has prompted me to open a Speyside Single Malt GLENALLACHIE, , & It tastes like nectar fit for the Gods, Luvly Jubly Eh,   ,Regards Larry.PS No hic hics yet, :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

But I’ll just bet there will be a few hic hic’s in a couple of hours Larry :open_mouth:   We’ve just enjoyed a nice bottle of Chardonay on the patio after dinner but when the sun drops it still gets a bit parky so we came in doors, mebe I’ll have a wee dram later and Anne will have a brandy and lemonade but we have the youngest Granddaughter staying for three nights so have to stay sensible like!! as the rest of the Crew are in Amsterdam for the weekend but bin there done that a few times so it doesn’t interest me anymore going on “jollies” eh! So don’t spill any Larry at that price !! Cheers Dennis.

Spill it Dennis stop talking dirty, Now I ask you would I spill good single malts, Eh, Im only having two because I have a busy day on Sat, Fence painting so I will have to be fit & able as the weather forecast is decent, Preventitive maintanance is paramount as It was with our motors as Im sure you were the same with your fine fleet over the years ,   , Regards Larry.

You could always get a couple of poorly paid drivers to help you out with that fence, Larry. They’ll gladly pitch in with the promise of a ten bob note each!

…only when a Bewick driver was pushing him!!!

David

Bewick’s pushing me? I don’t think so- not if they were fitted with the dreaded Gardner 8 !!!

Bewick:
Has anyone ever built one, sold one when new, repaired one,DRIVEN one,or at least seen one or possibly got a photo (side view) showing the 8 potter sticking out the rear of the cab .

Now then Deano this was my post that kicked the 8LXB Big J hunt off in Jan 2010 and to date no one has produced a photo of any kind ! and apparently Smith of Maddiston ran 40 of the beasts :unamused: :open_mouth: While there is plenty of documentary evidence showing that the 8LXB was an option that isn’t the same as seeing one “in the flesh” and as I’ve said previously Guy Motors weren’t exactly high up in the pecking within the Leyland Group and, of course, Atkinson, ERF and Foden could never get enough Gardner engines and they more or less took almost all of Gardners production over many years ! I re-ignite the case once more ! Cheers Bewick.

Was the 8LXB engine offered in any other type of Guy truck or just the big J ■■?

DEANB:

It was only an option in the Big J Dean.

Well Dennis, you cant argue with this… ! 240 gardner for sale in this advert from 23rd April 1976 in
Commercial motor magazine !  :unamused:

William Lyons the founder of Jaguar bought Guy Motors off the Receiver in 1961 and their range of vehicles at that time used the Leyland/AEC/Meadows and Gardner engines and possibly some Perkins but I’m not sure about that last engine. Sir William developed the Big J ( Big Jaguar) range using the Motor Panels cab and initially the ■■■■■■■ V engines which were supposed to be manufactured next door at the Meadows plant which Jaguar also owned I believe ? but the ■■■■■■■ episode failed and Guy’s quickly started to use the engines I have listed. The 8LXB only appeared in late 71’ and then only in Atkinsons/ERF’s and Fodens in very limited quantity. Leyland had never been a friend of Gardner who they saw as a competitor for “loose” engines although Scammell were users of Gardner albeit grudgingly via their Leyland Parent but many operators were dyed in the wool Gardner users and were certainly not lovers of the Leyland 600/680 Power Plus engines so Scammell continued to use Gardner as an option in order to satisfy a segment of their buyers ! Guy never used the Leyland 600/680 engines IIRC although they did use the smaller Leyland engines as well as AEC engines. The original Guy Invincible Light 8 used the AEC 7:7 engine/ Turner 5 speed/Eaton 2 speed axle and Primrose trailing axle and this motor was reputed to have been the lightest 8 wheeler on the market in the late 50’s/early 60’s and capable of a 17ton pay load when fitted with a light weight platform. Just a bit of useless info ! Cheers Dennis.

I would class that advert as a bit iffy and I’m saying no more as I just bet if you turned up to look at said motor it would have been " sorry mate we’ve just sold it this morning" I kid you not !! Cheers Dennis.

Your just trying to confuse me now Dennis with all this jargon as you know i dont know anything about
Guy trucks ! Now the advert states a 1975 model with a 240 gardner ? So that confirms that they
did exist ! :bulb: Agreed ? :sunglasses: :unamused:

Just to put matters into perspective Deano there was a TN member (Trev H RIP) who was an apprentice fitter at BRS and used to mix with the apprentices from Guy Motors at Tech College and also he visited the Factory on many occasions as BRS were big operators of Guy Big J and he was adamant there was never such a beast built and neither did he recall any of his pals speak of them in conversation. I believe there has been one or two Hybrid transplants of the 8LXB into Guy chassis but they don’t count anyway. Seddon Motors did build a small number of 32/4’s with the 8LXB engine but for some strange reason ( The DB 6:600 wasn’t up to it) derated the engine to 200BHP which was always somewhat puzzling to operators at the time and there is photographic evidence on TN of the Seddon installation and I have personally driven one in the mid 70’s ( and I wasn’t “smoking” any gear and convincing myself it actually was an 8LXB)  Cheers Dennis.
