Watch it, ■■■■■■■■ you’re treading on dodgy ground again!

Hi Casey, I wonder how our Northern counterparts would have fared at a session chez mine hosts Tonto and Esme in the Lamb with the likes of Bill Greenman (Wallop) Curly Ryder, Jim Allen,Trevor Probert,Lewis Brooks and all the others too many to mention -you know who they are/were but believe me when I was in the get rich quick club and had visited the aforementioned hostelry I certainly knew I had been there because my vit got all tangled up and I kept getting the mucking fords wuddled!

Them was the days, matey- real lorries, real men and real beer. My own taste buds were honed on Cheltenham & Hereford Breweries finest offerings!

Aye! probably “watery” and 2% strength, your back teeth would be floating before you got “■■■■■■■ I bet ! Now Jennings Bros. of Cockermouth 's “Sneck Lifter” 5% would blow your socks off a real Marra’s drink ! If they were to send a few barrels down to “The Forrest” they’d be rolling around ■■■■■■ as puddings in no time, and that after only 3 pints or so! Cheers Bewick.

Well Dennis, Do you think it will ever happen, As for myself I cant recall ever seeing one of these motors, I saw many Atkis ERFs & the odd Foden with the 8 LX Gardner in, So if there is any photos out there The people that have them could put them on this thread , Regards Larry.

Hiya Larry, well considering this thread has been going for over 5 years and we haven’t had so much as a sniff it sure looks like we’ll never see one ! I just can’t see a lowly firm like Guy within the once mighty Leyland group being allowed to get their hands on an 8LXB when the likes of Atky/ERF and Foden couldn’t get all the 8 potters they wanted, Seddon managed to get a small number but then they downrated them to 200bhp,now that was a real waste in my book eh! Cheers Dennis.

Trev H was the most likely lad on this thread to confirm the existence of an 8LXB as he was at Tech with Guy apprentices and was also a regular visitor to Fallings Park for BRS and he is adamant there never was such a beast.Cheers Dennis.

I’m not adamant there was never one built,
just that I went in Guy’s on a regular basis and never saw one, I went to Tech college with Guy apprentices and knew people that worked on production that couldn’t give an answer to the question.
I am not saying they never built one, I just find it odd that no one has a conclusive picture and there is no factory publications or press details on such a model, there are those that say they have driven them, I don’t disbelieve this at all but I believe they could never have built very many, perhaps a few experimental ones, there would otherwise be more evidence of their existence.
Still it’s produced a few laughs along the way

That’s what it’s all about, Trev, but don’t tell Dennis- he still thinks it’s all deadly serious! :unamused:

Apart from the 40 that Smith of Maddison had, plus maybe a few others dotted around the country, I guess that there were not many produced in the grand scheme of things?

Pete.

Well that’s another mystery, there’s loads of photo’s on the web for Smiths of Maddison even ones of humble 180 Gardner powered motors, did these special 40 motors not warrant any picture line ups ?

Too busy being double shifted!!!

David

There were definitly 40 8LXB engined Guy Big J’s built. David Edwards a partner with his father Roy Edwards in M A Evans Transport from Knighton had one of the 40 made. Smith’s of Maddiston had the other 39. David Edwards is a quiet bloke and doesn’t tell lies. Lots of ex Smith’s drivers have also stated that they drove these vehicles. And I believe them.
What anyone else wishes to believe, is up to them.
Cheers Dave.

One Sunday afternoon a small group will clear the brambles and rubble from the rotting doors of a barn and gain entry. Shafts of sunlight will penetrate the gloom. In the corner will be an old tractor unit covered by an ancient fly-sheet. In the settling dust, two things will be established: firstly, that there is no engine in the Guy Big-J revealed; secondly, that the underside of the fly-sheet bears an imprint of the rear end of an 8LXB - just like the Turin Shroud! But, does the imprint belong to the Guy or does it belong to a previous unit covered by the fly-sheet? One can’t help noticing too, that the flysheet has Bewick printed across it. The mystery deepens and the thick plottens! Robert

Very ■■■■■■■ funny Robert    Alex and James Smith had sold SOM to United Transport Group long before the 8LXB engine was produced and no way would UT sanction capital expenditure which included a hefty surcharge to that applied to the big Gardner, particularly on such a basic fleet motor as a Guy Big J and in any case it is more than extremely doubtful that Leyland would have allowed Guy Motors to supply such an engine if indeed Gardner had been able to supply the “Phantom 40”.Cheers Bewick.

I think we’ve been out gunned on this Dennis and now some lunatic has gone and built one, the answer will now always be in Google images

Sadly, due to the rust worm eating it’s way through that superior British steel, there is no longer any demand for 8LXBs to re-engine Big Js. It has also come to light that the Hong Kong shipping magnate Who Flung Dung is now using Atkinson chassis as anchors for his extensive fleet of junks. This unfortunately means that the stack of Gardner engines in Bewick’s barn is unlikely to result in further profit for our favourite entrepreneur.
I’m sure all his fans on this site would be saddened to realise that Bewick’s third million is in danger, so any suggestions as to what he should do with all those hidden engines would be appreciated. Any suggestions beginning with the words, “Bend over, Dennis” will be given priority.
