GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

3300John:
Hiya…i thinks the big J been done specially to satisfy us old crinkles…and what a good jobs been done of it…
it didn’t come out of the factory did it ■■?
john

As you say John it looks like an excellent re-production of what a Big J would have looked like with the 8LXB stuck out the back but it sure didn’t come out of Fallings Park like that :unamused:  Cheers Dennis.

harry_gill:
Hiya,
Like I’ve said on several occasions plenty of 6 pot "Percy’s were produced and
rolled off the premises but never an 8 potter any in existence are away from
the factory “specials” the 6 potters were in my opinion crap and not a patch
on the ■■■■■■■ and Roller engined jobbies.
thanks harry, long retired.

That’s the spirit “H” (oops! I shouldn’t have mentioned the word Spirit  ) stick to our guns mate we are still on the right side of the argument and we are likely to remain so ! Cheers Dennis.

Dave the Renegade:
M A Evans had a Guy Big J which was a genuine factory built one, out of forty which were made. Smiths of Maddiston had them as their former drivers have stated. But it ain’t no big deal.

Ever thought that you might be ‘■■■■■■■ into the wind’ Dave? :unamused: Anyway, nobody ever takes notice of what us ex tipper drivers say as we were (apparently) brain dead.

Pete.

:open_mouth:

Blimey Bewick did you actually read what he said about Gardners.  While just sticking another 2 pots on them would obviously have just made them 33% more crap than they were with 6. :smiling_imp:  Which explains why Leyland Group didn’t bother.

Assuming that really is a Big J with an 8LXB in it there’s no actual proof that it isn’t a home built special or aftermarket modified job using an engine transplant at whatever point in time after it left the factory.Although maybe confirmation of matching engine and chassis numbers at the time of original registration might prove the case at least on the balance of probabilities.

Although the biggest shock and surprise in that case would be why would anyone want to put that in the thing instead of a turbocharged ■■■■■■■■ :smiling_imp:

Even The Great Man from Leatherhead supports our argument that there never was a Big J built with an 8LXB engine ! I never said he was a [ZB] :unamused:   he does talk sense sometimes, well not very often but in the case of a Big J with 8LXB engine he is 101% correct so lets have some ID plates posted. Cheers Bewick.

I doubt wether with even your finely tuned “aggravation skills” “CF” you can get this thread up and running rampant again and I will say again you are “■■■■■■■ into the wind” dissing the Great Gardner engines to me, all you’ll get from me is a “Go and ■■■■ yourself” which on the second thoughts you may be well able to do my Son ! :unamused:      Cheers Bewick.

John West:
Think I’ll quit while I’m behind here Dennis - can’t get the white quite right!

I understand 7 years is the statutory limit for all claims.

Hiya,
Dennis, I’ve driven many 180 Gardner engined motors usually in ERF and Atki
frames a 180 breathed on by John Killingbeck outshone any 240 Gardner I’ve
ever driven but the 180 when in the Big J for some reason just didn’t just gel
whether it was because my rides in the J 's were either ■■■■■■■■ or Roller
powered which really was no contest Trev “H” will no doubt know the reason
for the ■■■■ poor performance was it the running gear that made them “never
so clever” or was the Gardner “cut back as lean as possible” for economy.
thanks harry, long retired.

Just like ■■■■■■■■■ Johnnie, everybody will have one soon, common as muck eh! Once upon a time they were as rare as rocking horse ■■■■■ ! Cheers Dennis.

Dennis I hope the exposure as not made too much of an impact on your pension funds as that was not the intention as I posted them without thinking of the finacial consequences which it could incur, I had no intention of placing you in a similar situation as the Greek econamy is in.

cheers Johnnie

It was that poxy 6speed Thorneycroft/AEC gear box “H” that was used by Guy’s but they used the Fuller 610 and 9509 boxes behind the ■■■■■■■ and Rolls and the Fuller made all the difference as you quite rightly say.Cheers Dennis.

Harry, The only motors I drove with 180’s were Guy’s and I never understood why people raved about them, the ones we had with the Thornycroft box were dire, we had some with 180’s with the Fuller box which were better but considering we only pulled tyres or car spares (about 7-10ton load max !) they never got anywhere in a hurry.
On general haulage (20t+loads) we had 290 ■■■■■■■ or 280 Rolls powered Guy’s, an entirely different animal that would pass most motors in their day, to get out of one of these into a 180 machine was real punishment  but the main reason was 180’s got down rated to 30.5t gross so no good on the usual 21t payloads of the time. BRS had their own production line at Fallings park and we had all sorts of motors off them, there were over 20 engine/box options, of course if they built one with an 8lxb it wouldn’t have seen the light of day at BRS when a ■■■■■■■ or Rolls done the same work for several thousand pounds less albeit using more fuel than the frugal Gardner.
We even once got fobbed off with some with Leyland 500 fixed head engines that Leyland insisted Guy’s fitted what a sad joke they were but that was in there final throws when they went on to Marathon and Landtrain production.

Well, whatever, that Big J is leading t’Lord Mayor of Morecambes’ parade through town this weekend, haven’t your serfs told you Dennis?

I’d make a special trip from Ellan Vannin to see it but I’ve spent all my dodgy night out money… :grimacing:
