Hi a Guy big J with a Gardener 150 Yes a 240 no never seen one, I drove a big j for beresford transport at tunstall Stoke on Trent when I started there Yes to the continent my first trip was with a guy called well nick named ■■■■■ Dawson we ere both in our twenties in fact I was 21 my first trip was to bolougne france delivered a double deck load of Bamford Balers to the dock side and reloaded Talc from Gent in Belgium i kept the Big J for about 6 months I went to italy many times the hard way that is mont blanc tunnel before all the new autoroutes were built not a bad Tractor but well underpowered kids now would not drive a lawn mover with an engine that small in it. Great days when truckers loved the job and new how to rope and sheet a trailer. sorry about going on so long but its nice to go back in time 39 years actually i’m 59 now.
Steady on! you’ll have the “curtainsideer only gang” going mad mentioning sheeting and roping, its a “taboo subject” especially when they wouldn’t have a clue where to start!! There would have to be permanent “road clearance” gangs at every roundabout nowadays if the industry was ever returned to sheeting and roping!!! and thats for sure!! Bewick.
Went on my second 7 hour drivers cpc the other week and i got a brief insight into our companys history■■? and i learnt how to pick things up with my back straight,i learnt about personal hygene and how to smile and be curteous to our customers and then our “trainer” told us how to tie a dolly but only verbally because he said hed not done 1 for years and hed forgotten how to do it but had a genral idea… like u said Dennis not a clue
There’s a true saying “ramone” and I quote “Those that can,do,those that can’t teach”!!! Once youv’e learned to put a half hitch on its like riding a bike, you never forget! I bet that -anker didn’t have a clue how to make a hitch!! Dennis.
Very true Dennis, I haven’t tied a ‘dolly’ in anger since the late 80s, and I can still tie one with my eyes closed…
And with gloves on.
But how much weight did that thing have on the back running with a zb 150 Gardner up to the Blanc tunnel. I reckon he only ran up Shap but thought to this day it must have been the Alps.

Back to serious business chaps, anyone take a Guy Big J on European work or even the Middle East .
I know R.Crisps used to run “guys” on continental work don’t know about going to M/E but I know two drivers who ran M/E in Atki Borderers percy powered . Muntons used to run S39 Fodens to Italy in the 60s and 70s around 70% of wagons were British and mostly day cabs then I have been over in a Highwayman and a Atki viewline as well as the Samson and Tk Bedford and Crusader this was in the 60s and 70s and used digs as well.

I have seen the Bedfords on here that ran to the continent Johnnie,so I would think plenty of Big J’s must have run there as well, for whatever anyone thinks of them, most of them had the same running gear as the Atki’s etc.
Cheers Dave.
Dave the TKs were artics taking Concord Wings from Preston and engines from Derby to Toulouse and I am sure that "Berrisfords " from stoke ran big Js across as well

I’ve been driving through the alps regularly since the 1970’s and never once saw any Gardner powered British heaps there. At 5-8 bhp per tonne it would take all day to climb up to the Blanc let alone go over the Simplon,Cenis etc etc.

No one in particular but I’m sure at least ‘one’ Gardner fan will be along soon to defend the honour of those old nails.
Having said that there might be some truth after all in those sories about old Gardner powered Atkis still to this day being seen going over the alps into Italy. It probably took them that long to get to the top of those passes.

I expect they went up there as fast as anything else pulling the same weight in their day, they certainly did a good job in the 60’s and 70’s.In another thirty years time there will be the same argument about the lorries of today and the modern stuff of 2041,thats if the World hasn’t been blown up by all the crackpots .
Cheers Dave.
PS. It won’t be worrying me .

I have just bumped an old thread up as I was not sure how to link it and you can see on there that they did go over the Alps and Percy powered as well and a few Big Js as well on British wagons on continental work
cheers Johnnie
P S I never liked the Patricroft smoker at all and I never took one over

You’re right 150 Gardner powered Atki on the way back from Bologna. It does’nt say how much weight it was pulling and how long it took him to get there let alone back though.
I think you should look at LB76S thread Carryfast as they were running mk111 and mkv mammoth majors to italy very heavy and i wouldnt imagine they would break any limits up the Blanc and i would think they were about the same power as the AECs

A couple of hundred years ago, they would have strung Carryfast up for being anti British .
Or the then authorities would have transported the “scroat” to Austrailia Dave! or come to that dave do you know if he speaks with an Aussie accent?Cheers Dennis.

It’s all that lot of Brits, who got shipped out to OZ,who’s decendants ended up driving Detroit powered road trains in a place where the Brits were queueing up to get into to get away from the zb up that we made of this place.
A bit like all those ex drivers of Gardner powered heaps who jumped ship fast enough to a better, more powerful, wagon whenever the opportunity arose.Anyway where’s my ally Harry gone he’s as much use as the Italians were to Hitler.

The roadtraiins in Australia are powered by all sorts of engined motors from various parts of the world. There are plenty of Volvo’s and other makes beside the American kit out there.
Cheers Dave.

Maybe but they gave up on Gardner powered ones early in the game and it’s only relatively recently that Volvo have got the type of outputs to match a late 1960’s/1970’s Detroit powered Kenworth.
But it’s ironic how those decendents of those convicts would’nt even let us into our own colony to drive them.
