Proud to be British isnt politically correct well more specifically being proud to be English isnt ,you could get branded…maybe Carryfast is thinking for a change
It’s all that lot of Brits, who got shipped out to OZ,who’s decendants ended up driving Detroit powered road trains in a place where the Brits were queueing up to get into to get away from the zb up that we made of this place.
A bit like all those ex drivers of Gardner powered heaps who jumped ship fast enough to a better, more powerful, wagon whenever the opportunity arose.Anyway where’s my ally Harry gone he’s as much use as the Italians were to Hitler.
The roadtraiins in Australia are powered by all sorts of engined motors from various parts of the world. There are plenty of Volvo’s and other makes beside the American kit out there.
Cheers Dave.
Maybe but they gave up on Gardner powered ones early in the game and it’s only relatively recently that Volvo have got the type of outputs to match a late 1960’s/1970’s Detroit powered Kenworth.
But it’s ironic how those decendents of those convicts would’nt even let us into our own colony to drive them.
You are splitting hairs now Carryfast,it’s Horses for courses, the British weren’t going to produce a high powered motor just for the Australian market with limited sales. The Americans had them due to the vast distances and different type of journeys they do from the south through to Alaska.

Or for the long distance UK and Euro haulage markets and when the Brits eventually got fed up with running to Italy,or even around the UK, with motors like that 150 Gardner powered Atki (or even a 240) ,the rest is history.
They probably had similar arguments in all the British manufacturers boardrooms and between those companies’ sales departments and their customers and unfortunately those in support of guvnors’ motors,as opposed to drivers’ ones, won out until they realised too late that they were wrong.

You can use the same argument about anything mechanical that used to be made in the UK,most of the car and motercycle makers have disappeared because of manufacturing costs. All the American motors could soon follow and be replaced by Chinese made vehicles.

The issues, concerning the results,of over conservative guvnors wrecking the British truck manufacturing industry before globalisation took off, are’nt the same thing at all as the modern day ones concerning globalisation. But the only way that the Chinese will ever be able able to make something as good as a yank (or European) truck is if the yanks and Europeans are stupid enough to give them the know how to do it.
The scary thing is is that the Americans (and most Europeans) probably are’nt that stupid but our governments are.
There is not that many yankee owned motor manufacturers and the most buoyant motor industry is at present the Germans so much for labour costs being the excuse and it is leading their recovery out off the recession
Chris Webb:
This is an American V16 diesel built by Alco, would it squeeze into two Big Js?
I’m sure they fitted them in the TK
Would that be a 300 or a 330 John .
I think it would have been in the 330 Dave, I’m sure there is someone from up north that will put us right
hiya,
The 330 was the motor but it was at the cost of the log book shelf or bunk if you was built like a racing snake only ever drove a TK for a day and the regular driver had bedding on that shelf surely nobody tried to kip on one of those shelves did they??.
thanks harry long retired.

I know of a few that did regularly Harry, obviously the bigger blokes couldn’t fit into that space.I drove several TK’s and a KM,but never had nights out.As I am 6’ and the tipping gear lever was on the shelf in most of them,a good job I didn’t.
Cheers Dave.
Yeah I had noticed the old boy was missing Dave, and things were a bit quite. I can only think the same as you he’s cleaning the Guy engine, I’m sure he’s got it clean as a whistle, It’s the 2 pots that stick out the back that’s taking the time, what with the road spray and things, hopefully it won’t be to long before we hear from him.
cheers
John.
