Dennis, who’s this guy subterfuge that stitched up carryfast. His sewing must be rubbish as carryfast seems to have escaped and landed on the best site on trucknet.
Hiya Robert, are you saying that someone has actually “got the better” of the “Bold Carryfast” thats a first then! He’s usually like a terrier,he has to have the last yap!but obviously someones seen him off! Probably gave him a shoe toe up the jacksie!! Cheers Dennis.
Dennis I hope you are not thinking of stitching Carryfast into a bag with a few bricks,it would be cruel to throw him into one of those big ponds up your way. Dennis old mate please don’t do it .
Cheers Dave.
That would be no good Dave as “crap” usally floats!!! Dennis.
Not if you put enough of bricks in with it Dennis .
How about an 8LXB crank case? We could shove his head through no4 and stick his arms through 1 and 8!! And take a photo of him looking like a chinese cooly with a yoke on him!! Dennis.

Bricks would be cheaper Dennis, think about the price of scrap on the 8LXB bits.
Yes they did.Their trunkers were in at us most nights for bulbs wiper blades air leaks etc and they did have several of them.If Stewart Melrose at Bathgate bought them the engines would have been exported.I bought a tractor unit from them once to get the cab and engine for our 220 ■■■■■■■ powered Big J6 wrecker. It could tow a loaded artic at 60mph on the end of a ridged bar.

This is a shot of our wrecker going north on the M6 to Carlisle(IIRC) with a fully freighted F88 of Smiths of Whiteinch on suspended!

So you’ve almost finally admitted that all the zb thing is good for is being used as a boat anchor.

harry_gill:
hiya,
Don’t want the thread to doze off, so just a memory but drove quite a few Big Js and one of of them had a full width under bumper exhaust a la supposedly 8LXB jobbie but alas only ■■■■■■■ engined but it did bob on a bit over 70 MPH with a tail wind and downhill.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry,
the 240 powered Guys in Smith’s fleet all had extra long exhausts boxes under the front bumper,I was not aware that ■■■■■■■ also shared that exhaust box.

Dead right there “Carryfast” as long as you were “inserted” in it as described above!!!
I can’t believe this thread as reached 43 pages about a wagon which I thought were a load of crap as the gear stick was to close to your leg when in top gear and the one I drove for a couple of weeks only had a 180 “percy” in it. The guy I worked for did not think that leaving Sheffield after mid day for Liverpool docks and getting tipped was worth a night out so I handed my notice in and the inappropriate way I did it I knew he would not be giving me a reference as he was snoozing when we went our separate ways and I was on tankers the next week so it turned out fine for me as I was driving a Crusader then and earning nearly twice as much cash.
Johnnie
Well,I were talking to bloke in the pub yesterday and his brother’s sister in law’s uncle’s father used to work for an IOM haulier who ran a MK3 AEC Mammoth Major tanker with a Mirlees diesel engine out of a ship,a V16 it was he reckoned and he’s bringing some photos in tomorrow…or was it thursday? Anyway he sounded genuine enough when I picked him up off the floor for the second time and shoved him in a taxi.

A good bit of kit for refueling the motorbikes Chris .
Cheers Dave.
IMO this thread has outlived its continued interest, and should be consigned to the Archives!!! I am quite prepared to accept(as I always have done) that Guy Motors did,in fact, build a small number of 8LXB Big Js! The question I posed initially was to ask if anyone had ever seen a Big J with an 8LXB engine and were there any photos of one. This was immediately ceased upon and mis-interpreted as claiming there had never been such a motor!!I must say though that throughout the time the thread has been running opinion has been equally divided between those that are adamant there was(have driven one) and those that are equally adamant that no such motor was ever built!!! However, for all the "huffing and puffing"no one as yet has produced a credible photo or Brochure/Spec sheet to support this “Yeti like” motor!! So IMHO I think we should call it a “no score” draw! And before another storm of “Dung” decends on me I am more than happy to believe that Guy’s would have built such a motor although maybe not in the numbers that have been claimed by some of the contributors to the thread!!! The End,Bewick!

Hi Chris, A firm I worked for took V16 engine blocks into Mirlees Blackstone at Hazel Grove, the blocks were cast at John Thompsons, W-ton but I think the ones they made would have been a bit heavy for a tank, the bare casting was 22ton.
