GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

Bewick:
I’ve been doing somemore scanning and look what I’ve found! a side/rear shot of a Guy Big J!!! If this unit had an 8LXB engine it would be sticking out to where the Cat walk is fitted. And i wasn’t trying to find a shot of the backend of a Big J,I just stumbled across it in the miscellaneous box! Simples! Cheers Dennis.

Funny how you stumbled across that pic, just after Chris posted, what a coincidence. Some of those Smith drivers might just stumble across someting that sticks out into the catwalk Dennis  .
Cheers Dave.

The shot was primarily of the Bewick Tautliner crossing the Railway bridge and also the Milnthorpe MOT Station Dave.Cheers Dennis.

You could be forgiven for thinking that somewhere there will be Spec brochures for all the models that Guy produced up until they were closed down by the annuses at Leyland. Its very strange indeed that the length of time this thread has been running we’ve had zilch in the way of either written and photographic evidence.I fully understand that Guy Motors were always at the bottom of the “food chain” in the Leyland group but the Guy was ,nevertheless,a very popular fleet motor.I remember the last 3 new Big Js cost us circa £9500 each in 76/77 as opposed to £15000 for the F88s and SA 8LXBs,so the Big Js were value for money and reliable and economical into the bargain! Cheers Dennis.

Did they have 8LXBs in them Dennis?..just saying

steptoe:
Dennis is this what you are looking for? One of Smiths Guys with a 240 Gardner in it. (or at least a badge)

Fleet No MD 910 is the Guy used on the calendar picture, and that also shows it as being 240 powered!!!

Must we really continue■■?

Rgds to all believers

if i,m not mistaken the road tax is off it and the one behind to its right is sitting at the ramp,it also looks like all my stuff is out the cab.
i would hazard a guess and say these were being loaded onto a trailer as they had reached the end of their working lives with smiths,circa1978 or 9

Sorry Loader8,I was still driving one in 1980,on night trunk from Manchester North Street,to Maddiston and down to Market Drayton with rubber, then empty trailer from Market Drayton[Tern Hill Cafe] back to Manchester,I then went roaming in 81 or 82,with a ■■■■■■■ 220 Guy.

Rgds,

hiya,
Don’t want the thread to doze off, so just a memory but drove quite a few Big Js and one of of them had a full width under bumper exhaust a la supposedly 8LXB jobbie but alas only ■■■■■■■ engined but it did bob on a bit over 70 MPH with a tail wind and downhill.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Harry,
This thread won’t doze off as long as Dennis is around,he will find some reason to dispute the facts that have been laid before him  .
Cheers Dave.

same as you SOM drivers did in front of James and Alex! You should have seen “Fergie” he could get “right down” when he curtsied!!! Cheers Dennis.

Dennis…P…L…E…A…S…E…ony person I have to curtsy to is Liz, when I’ve done owt wrong, or want summit !! :unamused:

Only met Alex Smith once, (I didn’t know who he was at the time,) but he commented on how clean and tidy my wagon was, and said something on the lines that he wished a lot more drivers looked after them as well as that !! LOADS of Brownie points that day…

Think I may have got to the reason you never got your Xmas vin rouge and Brie. Tracked it via the loading / shipping notes… collected by Norbert Dentressangle on the 20/12 trailer ND558, dropped at Le Harve 21/12, shipped LD lines to Portsmouth 22/12…now this is the strange bit Den, was collect by a transport company, no reg details of the vehicle, other than it was a TM Bedford with a Detroit Diesel…the driver signed the release note…C.Fast.
Ummmmmm, Dunno Den, but I recon it could be someone you know who perhaps has a grudge against you, and is noshing and suppin your Xmas fare from Brittany…any idea’s ■■.. :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

You could just be right there Dave, because your very generous gift failed to turn up on time(Carrefor Xmas special, Wine and cheese in presentation shrink wrap)was 20 Euro, now being "knocked out " @ 5Euro before both the Rouge and the brie go “Off”! So I dearly hope that it has gone “sraight through” our mates digestive system and he’s still got bad guts!!!Was this “bulled up”(under worked) SOM S’ampton Guy an Invincible with the C180 or was it a Big J with either 205 or 220 ■■■■■■■■■■■■ you are both keeping well and preparing for the new season! Are you sure that was’nt Dave the Renegade and he’s just found a way to make that Guy Big J with a 240 Gardner in it look and sound like a TM with a Detroit in it and he’s then obviously tried to make it look like it was me who’d collected it.In which case it’s either all still in transit on the A3 and has’nt reached Guildford yet or he gave up and just flogged all the load at the local french farmers market because he knew he could never get it there in time for christmas. :open_mouth:

Not guilty ocifer I’m being stitched up by subterfuge :open_mouth: .That’s a convenient alibi but I definitely remember being at home with witnesses when there was a news report about an old heap seen heading up the A3 towards Guildford travelling at an unusually low speed( like that which would have been expected of a Gardner powered Guy Big J) and the driver was reported to have sworn at a copper using a northern accent, when he was told to get a move on, although the trailer,at that point, was reported to have been empty. The case is ongoing. :open_mouth:

Hiya “Carryfast”,have you ever heard the term “fitted up”?(quite probably I would think!)well you have been my son! Who else would pull a stunt like that on this site? no-one except you ,especially when you knew who the “gear” was destined for!I made a 600 mile round trip and came back M/T handed! But I enjoyed the trip in the Big J C220----for all the “hot air” on this thread about 8LXB Big Js they couldn’t find one for me to make the trip!!! at least the ■■■■■■■ had a nice heater in it!!! Cheers Bewick.

Dennis, who’s this guy subterfuge that stitched up carryfast. His sewing must be rubbish as carryfast seems to have escaped and landed on the best site on trucknet.
