Dennis is this what you are looking for? One of Smiths Guys with a 240 Gardner in it. (or at least a badge)

Well that looks the business to me, it appears to be a very slightly longer wheelbase, the fuel tank is on the opposite side and the front mounted silencer is longer than other models. Nice one!

You deserter Trev!!! I never said “Guy’s never built a unit with an 8LXB” only that I’ve never seen one so it would be nice to see a photo! And if they did build one I don’t think they lengthened the WB!! Seddons didn’t so I wouldn’t think Guy’s would, they would only have shortened the Prop do you think? Dennis.

They were on a 9’6" wheelbase Dennis.David Edwards told me that theirs did have a longer wheelbase because of the 240 engine.
Cheers Dave.

My Big js were also on a 9’ 6’’ WB Dave and they had the 180 LXB engine! That 240LXB of your Pals sounds like some sort of Hybrid to me,it might also be on a wider track than normal!!! Cheers Dennis.

We will have to find one for him, although it’s surprising what these SmIth of Maddiston chaps are finding, each time I log on,there is more conclusive evidence.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Still want the rear view and evidence one came down the production line because my pal who visited the plant on three occasions for educational purposes is adamant that none did, any that are in existance have been created after leaving the factory. PS i don’t want custard should i need to eat humble pie.
thanks harry long retired.

The only rear view “H” and me want to see is all you lot bent over in Burtons window when you fail to produce the photographic evidence!!!Dennis.

hiya,
Dave i never took a photo period, but it seems very strange to me that no’one ever did, just about every other motor has been photographed/illustrated for posterity from just about every angle and yet such a rare bird never was.

Makings of a new thread here “reagle”!!! I can say for definite that the Queen exists and I’ve seen all round her! The wife has even “curtsied” to her in person! same as you SOM drivers did in front of James and Alex! You should have seen “Fergie” he could get “right down” when he curtsied!!! Cheers Dennis.

Can also say have seen the Queen Dennis and her Hubby and two of her son’s at her main office.Wasn’t that impressed, but then again it was the first time I had worn a suit for 35 years.

You could be forgiven for thinking that somewhere there will be Spec brochures for all the models that Guy produced up until they were closed down by the annuses at Leyland. Its very strange indeed that the length of time this thread has been running we’ve had zilch in the way of either written and photographic evidence.I fully understand that Guy Motors were always at the bottom of the “food chain” in the Leyland group but the Guy was ,nevertheless,a very popular fleet motor.I remember the last 3 new Big Js cost us circa £9500 each in 76/77 as opposed to £15000 for the F88s and SA 8LXBs,so the Big Js were value for money and reliable and economical into the bargain! Cheers Dennis.

It may be just an optical illusion to me ,but that Big J looks to be a shorter WB than 9’ 6’'? Dennis.

Don’t need a wig Dennis, and I think if I’d have turned up in a boiler suit the coppers on the gate would have turned me back

You are not exempt from being popped at Harry.I never took a photo either, but I believe David Edwards who said they had one of these mysterious beasts and I believe him  .
Cheers Dave.

It’s a pity Gardner didn’t make a 16 cylinder engine for Guys,at least you’d see the extra ten pots resting on the catwalk.

Sorry…shall I go away? :grimacing:

I’ve been doing somemore scanning and look what I’ve found! a side/rear shot of a Guy Big J!!! If this unit had an 8LXB engine it would be sticking out to where the Cat walk is fitted. And i wasn’t trying to find a shot of the backend of a Big J,I just stumbled across it in the miscellaneous box! Simples! Cheers Dennis.Rear O/S view of a Seddon unit 180LXB,same cab as Guy and same WB.
