GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

i hope i have helped you,but i don,t understand ,if you were driving in those days and we passed you, were we going that fast that you couldnt tell what engine we had,did you not see us struggling at 75mph to keep the guy going in a straight line, the guy with the 8lxb was a great motor but driving them could be hard work.you would not have to worry about us passing once we moved on to b-series erf,s with the 8lxb as they would not go over 62mph.
thats progress for you.

Hiya …can i ask are we talking 8lxb or gardner 240… i thought the seddon 8lxbd was only 200 bhp and with that c…y 8 speed
Brown splitter box. that did,nt do anything for the 8 pot. I had 2 pals who drove the same 8 pot seddon and said they had to respect
the box and not try and race the change

Hiya “Carryfast” Happy New Year to you! however I thought we’d got shot of you after the riots at Ford Open Nick!!! Did you get parole early after you got up all the other lags nostrils and they rioted!!! Bewick.

Dennis you have obviously not been following the debates on the professional drivers forum, where your pal Carryfast has been very vociferous, and to be fair taken a kicking and came back for more. He,like yourself sticks to his guns, even if he’s wrong  .
Cheers Dave.

If ever I’d have got a job on Bewick’s lot I’d have been the only driver driving a TM with a Detroit in it because he probably would have got fed up arguing  .But if he would’nt change his mind I’d have got a job with that SOM lot instead because they obviously realised that I was right,as usual.

Into the dug-outs lads “Carryfast” is back spraying his verbal Diarear ( ryhmes with hit and git!!) about again!! Bewick.

Dennis don’t mix it with him,he’s a battle hardened veteran now, from scrapping with all those 44 ton hardcases on the professional forum :smiling_imp:    .
Cheers Dave.

Dave,in the very unlikely circumstance that the “bold Carryfast” had ever enquired about a job at Bewick Transport (and we’d agreed to be "interviewed by him!) and I was on an “off day” I might just have given him a months trial on this TK! And no doubt he would have been like a dog with two tails to have been given a start with a decent employer at last, considering some of the bad employers he appears to have had in his miserable life!!! But I can honestly say I don’t think he would last the month if he got the wrong side of some of our “rather less tolerant” drivers and could imagine him turning up in Aberdeen or somewhere bound and gagged in the back of a fridge van at -25 !!!Dennis.

Are you sure that should’nt have been 44 tonne ‘headcases’ who can live with automatic gearboxes and computers which record fuel consumption and speed limiters and cruise control and running back and forwards to the local supermarket warehouse at 53 mph and then have to sit there all day etc etc. :open_mouth: :unamused:   That’s why I thought I’d get back to the good old days when it was just a case of arguing about who was getting a motor like that TM and who was going to be lumbered with that Gardner powered Big J. :open_mouth:

The 8LXB and Gardner 240 are one & the same engine. I’m sure I read somewhere (perhaps on here) that Seddon offered them de-rated in their tractors.

The SOM big j’s I did a change over with at tebay on nights were 220 ■■■■■■■■ that would have been about 77/78.

This Bewick Seddon had a 10 spd Fuller gearbox in it. Bewick.

who did you change over with trev and are you the same trev who tried to get himself killed at brock

They can’t have been Trev! they were all 8LXBs.Look by the time you plodded up to Tebay with your 290 ■■■■■■■ Big J the darkness would have been playing tricks on your eyes, and if the cotton wool had dropped out your ear 'oles on the way up you wouldn’t know wether it was an AEC 505 or a RR ticking over!!! Dennis.

i,m quite sure there were no smiths guys with a 290 ■■■■■■■ ,the only 290 ■■■■■■■ was in a b-series erf reg number PMS567T and fleet number MD1200

Yappie, Marstricky throw the towel in.Dennis is taking a battering, show some mercy for your old mate :open_mouth:  .

A batch of ■■■■■■■ 290 powered Big J’s was produced for BRS.

Made a bit more famous by their later use by Mervyn Edwards - who uprated them to 335.

I bet SOM or anyone else didn’t have Big Js that could sail 'downt th’cut!!!

This is what we sent up to Keswick to rescue our driver,The Milnthorpe Lifeboat,it was new in A.D.800 and was washed up on Morecambe Bay,I think it was one of the first IOM ferry’s! Dennis.

is that the boat you are sitting in just now, waiting for really heavy rain

Now then Dave ,don’t you think you are inviting a right punch-up if Yappie comes on the thread and finds “carryfast” has been running his mouth?
