hiya,
Or is it a case of if the cap fits wear it.
thanks harry long retired.
Just for you “H”,I know,I know,it’s an 81 as I don’t think I have one of the sole 80 we ran which true to form was an “annoying” nightmare, however, considering the amount of new spares that went into the poxy thing it wasn’t going to be sold off! So we parked it up at the bottom of the depot(after I’d given it a good hiding with the knotted rope!)And then it yielded up, we reckonded, about £2000 worth of spares over the next couple of years or so! as we were running 5 or 6 81s which were a completely different proposition to the 80.The 80 sure was a sorry sight when what was left of it went out of the depot on the back of the Scrappy’s tipper!Bye bye you bag of s***.!!!
hiya,
The cap fits me to a tee can i put lettering on the front something like “village idiot” because i’m beginning to wonder if i’m all there.
thanks harry long retired.

That is a genuine 8LXB.
I have known and had many dealings with Roy Edwards for many many years and he is one of the most genuine men I have ever met! If he says that this Guy had a 240 in it then I for one would believe this to be definitely true!
Hiya …that big J dose seem to be sitting quite high up on the springs.(heavy duty springs) the one i had with a 180 always
dipped at the front.I see that big J is loaded but there was,nt a great weight in the coated pipes. On that word we used to
take the bitumen to IICR Abercam where they made and coated the pipes it then closed. the outfit moved to warrington
at the back of the old safeway warehouse i think it was williams who owned it.
John
Glad to see that Pat and yourself John can see the truth of the fact, that the Guy Big J with the 8LXB wasn’t a myth.
As more proof emerges, some of the more cynical members, may see that they had the wrong end of the number of cylinders.
Cheers Dave.
Yes Bewick a Kirkstall HR and ZF Power Steering.Originally had a David Brown 9 speed box,but was replaced a Fuller.Lovely smooth lorry to drive,a little choppy without a trailer.Regards Richard.(And Dave my Mum`s family at Llanerch were called Wall.)

Dave,Ewch n uwch = higher and higher.Spoke to Wyndham at the last HUFC home game,he was a fitter at Gore Quarry and knows you.My family farmed at Llanerch above Radnor,Wyndham knew them. Uncle Walter and my Grandad were really good footballers and silky pilots. They were offered trials at a club in Manchester, but there father wouldn`t let them go. Sorry a bit off topic. Hope this makes up for it .My one time Borderer with an 8LXB.
Question! What drive axle did that Atli have?looks like it was a Kirkstall HR to me! And did it have power steering?Cheers Bewick.

From what I heard about the DB 9 spd box it was crap!!!It seems to me that Atkis couldn’t or wouldn’t build the perfect spec!!!They always seemed to “fire a curved ball in” of one or more of the following-----Group axle,David Brown 6spd or9spd,or no ZF power steering,(a RR engine would complete the line up of crap!)the Kirkstall HR was OK but I much preferred the Eaton axle given the choice which wasn’t very often when demand outstripped supply in the 70’s,Cheers Bewick.

According to the factory literature, Dennis, power steering on the Borderer was standard on engines above 220 bhp, and only optional on other models. Which rules out your 220s with their 204 bhp!

Hiya Chris, have you had a busy Festive season? Well how come this L reg 8LXB we aquired 2nd hand ex Vic Wild didn’t have PAS? I reckon my sentiment about Atkis “firing curved balls” regarding their vehicle specs still holds good!!!All the best for 2011 Dennis.

Not nearly busy enough, Dennis! And I wouldn’t disagree for one minute about those curved balls (cue sniggers in the background…)
I knew an owner driver in Walton-le-Dale who ordered a brand new 8LXB Borderer with a Kirkstall axle - he had friends in the factory who actually advised him to visit the line to make sure it never had that Group (Seddon) axle fitted - apparently there was considerable pressure from Oldham to disregard customer orders and shove out the Seddon axle wherever they could. I remember my Dad telling me similar things at the time.

Most odd and strange.I notice that Dennis has veered away from the Guy Big J with the 8LXB engine. Perhaps he has lost the will to challenge the fact that there actually was 40 of these vehicles produced.
Cheers Dave.

Now Dave my boy considering that it has taken over 12 months NOT to have produdced a difinitive photo of one of the said 40 chassis one could be forgiven if the will to live was becoming extremely difficult!!! Anyway the Atki was a far superior chassis to the Big J in any case!!!Keep taking the tablets, cheers Dennis.

Never had any dispute over the merits of the the Big J versus the Atkinson Dennis,as I never drove either. But I will have the logbook and an article to post from David Edwards regarding the Big J that they had.Finished the tablets last thursday Dennis, bloody good job.
Cheers Dave.
