Anyone wanna buy my original Big J with a V8 AEC engine in only 40 made they all blew up…joke
Its no joke, I knew a driver whose mate had one.
I heard they planned to put it in the Crusader but it never happened, theres a story from the AEC Gazette that says a top AEC official was at the GUY Works and spotted a V8 engine cant remember if it was ■■■■■■■ or perkins and went back to Southall and ordered them to start work on there very own V8…Then Leyland got involved and then…

IIRC I don’t think Leyland built Crusaders in 1967.Bewick
Hi Dennis I am sure they had them at a few shows before they went into service and the first ones were on a “J” plate same as the Samson and only in very small numbers probably just demo’s

Tut Tut Dennis,its not a Leyland,its a Scammell!!!
Rgds,
David
It did pass through my mind(very quickly!)when I typed Leyland, but hey! non of the firms aquired by Mr.Stokes were free of interference by their Leyland masters, unfortunate but never-the-less painfully true!!!Cheers Dennis.
A Question for the “Scammell brains trust” When did the first Crusader appear at a commercial show? Johnnie says the first one he saw was on a J plate,so that would mean late 70,early 71 then! I can hear coggs grinding and there’s defo a wisp of smoke rising from various pairs of ears up and down the UK!!!But will this kick off a new thread that could run as long as the Big J one!! Oh! and just to keep the pressure on you Scammell “sycos” did Scammell ever fit an 8LXB in a Crusader? IMO they didn’t/couldn’t /wouldn’t, but I will ,of course ,take my “medicine” concurrent with that which I may get via the Big J debacle!!! Well go on then lads get to it or are you going to sit in the “cafe” all day!!! Cheers Dennis.
