hiya,
Howay Chris you’ve got the interest , now what’s the story behind the pic.

hiya,
For me it’s got to be a bill of sale as delivered and a rear of shed shot as straight off the production line anything else as i’ve said before is a conversion and it would be a very difficult task to shoehorn a 240 into that chassis although not impossible would it have been worthwhile, remember Atkinson had to increase the engine compartment size to fit the 240 into it just look at the difference between the motors with the ■■■■■■■ or 180 Gardner and those motors with the 8lxb inboard, from my memories of the Big Js the engine compartment was pretty chocker with the Roller or the ■■■■■■■ let alone a monster lump like the 240 just wondering where would the driver sit they was’nt a shed with much room to spare to start with, sleep tight.
thanks harry long retired.
Hi Harry,
On the 240 Guy I did drive for SoM,the driving position was identical to the other non Gardner engined Guys, the size of the engine overall was in the length not the width.
Take it easy,
Rgds,
David

hiya,
Hello David just an observation on my part but have seen the 180 and the 240 side by side and forgetting the length pretty certain the 240 was a wider lump the Borderer’s had to have the engine compartment enlarged to accept the 240 did’nt it ■■ or was i wearing the wrong specs as usual ■■.
thanks harry long retired.
I don’t know about a wider engine hump, but the 8LXB certainly had a larger radiator fitted, as did the Borderers which had the larger ■■■■■■■ and Rolls 280 installed.
As far as I can recall, the engine wasn’t any wider, but it was two pots longer, which increased the cubic capacity from 10.45 litres for the 6LXB to 13.92 litres for the 8LXB - both using the same size pistons.
hiya,
That’s me shot down, will have to visit Specsavers, or shut up, who applauded that suggestion.PS not bigger ancillaries maybe, ie turbo, manifolds grasping at straws here, never did drive a 240 engined motor, although plenty of Big “Js” never heard of that lump being fitted in one.
thanks harry long retired.

Spoken like a “true non-believer” “H” don’t you be swayed from your firm belief!!! otherwise they’ll have you believing you could pick the winners of the next Grand National,Derby,Prix de arc and the Kentucky Derby and string the bets together on an accumulater!!! I wouldn’t be suprised if they tried “H”!!! Dennis.

hiya,
Dennis I could’nt pick the winner even after the race was run, i’d be sure to ■■■■ it up somewhere as for the accumalator the only thing i would manage to accumalate is years and aches and pains, oh and with the new VAT increase debt, it’s being so cheerful that keeps me going.
thanks harry long retired.
Right lads here’s a crisp, clean and new Big J grille, surely one of you must have a “mint” 240 Gardner badge to screw on then it can act as the Memoriam headstone for the thread!!!How many 8LXB Big Js did SOM operate? oh dear oh dear!!! Dennis.

hiya,
Yes Dennis, nice and sparking and ripe for badge engineering now where did i put that screwdriver i would add a Knights head as well if i still had one.

I don’t know how much was enlarged but the big engined Borderers (240 Gardner and 280 Rolls) have a wider central front grille compared to the standard fitting.
Here’s a 280 Rolls powered one

Here’s a 240 Gardner one

and here’s the narrower version

The quickest way to tell is the location of the bolts which hold the top bumper on. If they’re in-board of the edge of the radiator surround, it’ll have a big Rolls (the NCB wagon has a 280, not a 290), a Gardner 8LXB or a big ■■■■■■■■ The latter were almost always in Venturers anyway. The standard radiator surround on a Borderer (ie one with a 6-cyl Gardner and all the other Rolls, ■■■■■■■ variants not listed above) had the brackets outside the radiator surround as depicted on Johnny Murphy’s old wagon.
This isn’t the first time Atkinson did this - when the 6LX 150 was launched, a larger radiator was required, so that was a way of distinguishing a bow-front Atkinson which had the larger engine (this also applied for motors with an 8LW too)

Spot on John!!! not offended in the slightest mate, thats what I put the grille on for!! Probably the nearest we will get to the real thing! But who knows what engine is behind the grille,in 10 years time there might be a riot on the thread arguing wether or not this Bewick tractor had an 8LXB behind the grille!!! As long as you haven’t stole my identity I don’t mind what you do!!! Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dennis, I think anyone considering stealing my identity would be far better off stealing Osama Bin Laden’s identity as they would not be in so much trouble or get blamed for as much maybe Harry’s the only person who is in as much bother but he has the same skin of a rhino as me and a life long experience but being as he is slightly my senior he out ranks me
cheers Johnnie
