GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

This again was taken with an instamatic so quality not brilliant . It is seen in either Kington or Knighton or the town in between , but Renagade Dave will know.

Trev_H:
I had a jaguar cat on the front of my Guy, didn’t have a Jag engine though.

Where do you think they got the ‘Big J’ name from…

I think there was an older model designed especially for fleet managers.

It was called a Guy Worrier…

Yeh, and it says Heinz baked beans on the side of the bus, but he ain’t got any.

I would say that the Guy was new to an Oil company being as the exhaust is front mounted and not to many fitted a percy in them but I could be wrong as usual

I had a new 6 legger with the exhaust at the front, ( no it didn’t have 8 pots    ) it was a gutless AEC 505, but that was a tipper.

Hi Chepstowchap,
Geoff Jones lived in Kington when he had lorries,he now lives about two miles downthe road from me.He had about three lorries mainly on lime and slag. That Guy and an eight wheeler bulker that he ran would have been hauling slag from Corby most of the time to wherever his spreaders were.Next time I see Geoff I will get some info about the lorry off him.I think from memory that Guy had a ■■■■■■■ in it.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Johnnie,
You are quite right.David Edwards said it came from an oil company in Scotland, and they bought it off Chaddesley Commercials in Kidderminster when it was six months old.
Cheers Dave.

Hi KK,
Can’t say that I can remember the KM of Bengrys.Geoff only had one new lorry,a Leyland Comet four wheeler when he started up in 1970,he quite possibly had the Guy off Bengrys,he also ran an A series ERF eight wheeler bulker with the other two.
Cheers Dave.

I wonder what vehicle engine combination Dennis is hatching next.Poor old lad  .
Cheers Dave.

The worst lorry i have driven was a G290 GT Renault, dont know what the GT stood for but it wasnt speed i had to blindfold it to get it up hills. One of the best was a 1986 Foden with a 320 Gardner in it but i had just come from the Renault so anything would have been an improvement.Ive had various Scanias my favourite being a 380 topliner 113 but that wasnt spectacular on the hills either.Took a spot hire Merc 1729 to Germany and should have left it there, various Volvos i found the F10 comfortable the FL10 cramped FH12 ok.Several 2800 DAFs again gutless ,several Ivecos again cramped (tec and turbostars) but strong pullers

Hi Fergie,
Someone started a rumour that Dennis had been seen in the Falkirk area, looking for any of S O M’s old drivers.
Cheers Dave.

I will now call this Kangaroo court to order!!! (loud banging can be heard from the cells below where the SOM witnesses are been held for contempt) As presiding Judge in this very “longwinded” trial by “abuse” I have no alternative other than to give----Case Dismissed-----through lack of conclusive evidence to prove the claim "beyond all reasonable doubt!!! The jury is dismissed and the the drinks are on the Prosecution (Dave the Renegade) in the boozer next door, don’t get trampled in the rush, wait for it Johnnie, wait for it!!!The Chief Clerk.

Ah your honour Mr Judge, you have overlooked one vital piece of evidence still to arrive.A photo of a Guy Big J with an 8LXB from the Smith of Maddiston archives. You your honour did not think any existed, but I have made contact with a Smith archive man who has pictures of two.
I rest my case :exclamation: :exclamation:
Cheers Dave.

Part of an email I recieved from the S O M man.
Hi Dave

Well which depots had the other 38 then?

hiya,
For me it’s got to be a bill of sale as delivered and a rear of shed shot as straight off the production line anything else as i’ve said before is a conversion and it would be a very difficult task to shoehorn a 240 into that chassis although not impossible would it have been worthwhile, remember Atkinson had to increase the engine compartment size to fit the 240 into it just look at the difference between the motors with the ■■■■■■■ or 180 Gardner and those motors with the 8lxb inboard, from my memories of the Big Js the engine compartment was pretty chocker with the Roller or the ■■■■■■■ let alone a monster lump like the 240 just wondering where would the driver sit they was’nt a shed with much room to spare to start with, sleep tight.
thanks harry long retired.
