Both Dave!!! but on the plate if you please!!!Dennis.

Might have to treat this with a bit of caution, if its had the cab altered at a later date to a sleeper then it could also have had the bigger lump put in at the same time aquired from a Seddon or similar that had the big eight in. Really need the history to qualify for an original Big J and 8LXB, what do you reckon? Getting closer though. Franky.

Pretty certain it is a sleeper, the back of the cab curves away from just behind the door on the day cab, and there is certainly some bodywork visible.

Also the roof looks too long.

Bender “my son” you are now skating on “extremely thin ice” and unless you are looking for a “slap” I suggest you research this Big J thread more thouroughly as the size of the cab or wether,in this instance, it is either a day or a sleeper cab is entirely superfluous at this critical moment!!! Safe to say that if this particular unit has the ****engine in it Bill Wallace or Mickey Townsend never ran one!!! Western Motors in Dartford wouldn’t have sold one either!!!I hope you are not on “the wind up” either as some of these lads on here are in a very “ajitated” state on this thread!!! Cheers Dennis.

Dennis me old mate, get your optician to put a bit of extra glass in the lense of your glasses, that cab is longer than the usual assortment of Big J’s that have sprung up on this thread.Soon we will have the evidence from Commercial Moter and the log book to prove this once and for all.Did you catch any foxes the other day  .
Cheers Dave.

No I didn’t Dave! the snow was too deep at 2500 ft.so don’t you go dragging a “red herring” across the thread!!! I’m not interested in the cab!!! But on second thoughts you probably couldn’t see the back of the engine for the “nest box” so you will still be able to prolong the agony won’t you Renegade!!! Probably only has an AEC 505 in it anyway!!! Cheers Dennis.

Bloody Hell Dennis,2500 feet of snow, that’s serious snowfall, not on Morecambe Prom I hope

Sorry,back to the 8-pot…

Bewick, ‘Dad’ - these pics are clearly before and after sleeper.

Seems likely to me that the 8LXB engine had problems with the northern climate and torrential rain pouring down onto it, preventing it from getting up to running temperature, and increasing fuel consumption.

So the solution was clearly to shove a rabbit hutch on the back to keep it dry and warm, and also to warm up the driver’s black pudding while he’s driving over Shap Fell…

Jury’s out till more evidence appears !

The jury may as well go home Trev, because I have a bloke from Smith of Maddiston emailing me some pics of two of theirs.

I think you and me could shortly find out what General Custer felt like in the closing moments of his last stand Trev!!Anyhow wheres our Scout “H” ? he must have done a runner!!! Dennis.

The badge on the grille clearly says ‘Gardner 240’…

But then my old D series had a badge on each door that said ‘Custom Cab’…

I had a jaguar cat on the front of my Guy, didn’t have a Jag engine though. A lot of motors got uprated to a 240 with a badge. lol.
One thing about the Guy in the picture though Dave, the front mounted silencer does look bigger than the usual 180 job ■■

I can honestly say Trev,it was a 240,it came from Scotland.M A Evans bought it when it was 6 months old, they ran quite a few B series ERF’s after that Guy all with 8LXB moters.Roy Edwards the boss likes his blokes to do a fair days work, but always runs good kit.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Dennis, Trev, this “H” not done a runner old soldiers don’t run away but do get shot down occasionally and willing to be put on the firing line as soon as i see proof of a Big J being produced fresh from the factory with the 8lxb installed plus the rear of shed shot, the motor being re-engined after manufacture is a conversion and in my book does’nt count i had an Atki with a 150 percy inboard but the 180 badge on the grille and i did’nt do the badge engineering never even bothered to replace the “Knight’s Nut” that i fear may have become the property of BTS somwhere down the line,( you never know that may prick someones conscience and find one in my in-tray ) i was “burgled at least four times for my grille furniture” PS the aforementioned Atki did eventually get re-engined with an engine to match the 180 badge.
thanks harry long retired.
