Hi Steve,
Spoke to David tonight, his brother in Law has Commercial Moter mags going back to the 60’s.In one of them in 1974,there is a feature about that Big J with the 8LXB which they are going to get for me to scan.He is also going to look for more pics of the lorry. They had the Guy when it was six months old from Chaddsley Commercials in Kidderminster, previously it was on the oil work in Scotland.
Cheers Dave.
Hope you don’t mind me editing your photo Dave.

It’s a pity the Gardner 240 doesn’t have a give-away right or left stack like the big ■■■■■■■ or Rolls engined versions!
Chaddesley Commercials are still about too -

Feel free Dave.I’m no good at cropping pictures.By all means do the same to the other one.
Thanks Dave.

Not the best pic in the world.David Edwards the owner didn’t think they would be any use,but assures me there was an 8LXB in this Big J.
Does it have a sleeper cab in this picture?

Here it is Dave, does look like a sleeper to me.John Rook drove the F86 parked behind. Can you tidy the pic up.Thanks Dave.
Pretty certain it is a sleeper, the back of the cab curves away from just behind the door on the day cab, and there is certainly some bodywork visible.
Also the roof looks too long.

Bender “my son” you are now skating on “extremely thin ice” and unless you are looking for a “slap” I suggest you research this Big J thread more thouroughly as the size of the cab or wether,in this instance, it is either a day or a sleeper cab is entirely superfluous at this critical moment!!! Safe to say that if this particular unit has the ****engine in it Bill Wallace or Mickey Townsend never ran one!!! Western Motors in Dartford wouldn’t have sold one either!!!I hope you are not on “the wind up” either as some of these lads on here are in a very “ajitated” state on this thread!!! Cheers Dennis.

Dennis me old mate, get your optician to put a bit of extra glass in the lense of your glasses, that cab is longer than the usual assortment of Big J’s that have sprung up on this thread.Soon we will have the evidence from Commercial Moter and the log book to prove this once and for all.Did you catch any foxes the other day .
Cheers Dave.

No I didn’t Dave! the snow was too deep at 2500 ft.so don’t you go dragging a “red herring” across the thread!!! I’m not interested in the cab!!! But on second thoughts you probably couldn’t see the back of the engine for the “nest box” so you will still be able to prolong the agony won’t you Renegade!!! Probably only has an AEC 505 in it anyway!!! Cheers Dennis.

That photo was taken in the 70’s Dennis.I can’t remember the Big J in the pic,as I was toing and froing to the spinal injuries unit at Oswestry in those days. But I will swear by the fact that it is an 8LXB engined Big J,because Roy Edwards always bought good moters and still does.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
This looks nothing like a sleeper, and the engine must be on it’s side, that trailer looks a bit close to me to avoid hitting those elusive back two pots.
thanks harry long retired.

Have a look at the pic of it in the yard Harry.I admit the pic of it with the trailer,it looks like a day cab.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Yes Dave have checked both pictures but if the solo unit and the coupled one are the same motor the solo outfit must have undergone major surgery at a later stage or a bit of wrist shake took place during focusing the camera, the coupled one is definitely not a sleeper.
thanks harry long retired.

They wouldn’t resort to wrist shaking Harry, you look at the extra windows in the side of the cab behind the doors in the yard picture.
Cheers Dave.
