Found this site, it may be German or russian for all I know, they sell filters for all makes and this is a list of, Leyland J series as they call them, not an 8xlb in sight… heres the link if it works, mannol.ru/files/filter_lkx.pdf

It is there the first post must have been a glitch in the software. :open_mouth:

Bewick:
IIRC the 8LXB used the same filters as the 180LXB? But then if Guy’s fitted the 8LXB the Renegade may be sat outside at the top of his garden in minus 15 degrees repeating a mantra something like “just you wait you barstewards you’ll soon be getting yours,so you will”!! Bring me another large scotch Trace, please, its a bit “taters” out here!! Anon.

This thread is taking on mystical overtones perhaps we should ask Indiana Jones to whip up (sorry   ) a picture of the fabled Guy Big J 8LXB unit
After all he did find the Ark of The Covenant and various other lost treasures    Merry Christmas boys keep it up I believe its out there somewhere.
regards Big Al

Half and half Dennis,i think i know the answer to why they didn`t fit it ,i thought it may start another debate and keep the heat off you if he gets the pictures on here…all tongue in cheek

Bewick:

ramone:
I dont wanna start any trouble or anything but i wonder if they ever put the AV760 in a BIGJ!!!

“Trev H” will be the guy (excuse the pun!)to maybe answer that one “ramone”.But is this just your idea of a supporting act until the Grand Finale when all will be(well maybe) revealed!!! Cheers Dennis.

The truth will be evident as soon as I get the pic and logbook which I’ve been promised. If any of you care to look on big lorry blog, there are two people on there claiming to have seen the SOM Big J’s.
Cheers Dave.

Trust you to crawl out from under your stone “Carryfast” but you will note that I said the 6 and the 8 LXB used the same filter! We used to buy our Scania filters off Volvo at times and visa versa.Same for ■■■■■■■ ERF/ATKI.When are you setting off to Bethlehem to annoy the Wise men? Bewick.

Never tasted scotch in my life Mr S,always drank beer or a lager now and again. Not into Wines or Spirits.I’m only a humble ex lorry driver.
Cheers Dave.

Now then lads, you might be wondering why our two Road foremen,Chris Webb and Johnnie T. have disappeared early before Christmas! Well I can now let you into a secret,I think Big Al was already onto something when he talked of “things mythical”(I bet he was in on the secret all the time!)We are arranging a re-union rally on the "Top 'o Shap on Christmas Eve!!! Chris and Johnnie have gone up to the SOM Manuelrigg Garage in Maddiston to make sure all 39 8LXB Big Js will be ship shape and Bristol fashion ready to make the trip.Plus they are going to have to cast their net round for enough experienced old timers who can drive these great motor’s!! Unless you’ve got prior experience you will have no chance to get past “first base” at the interview(in the local ex Miners Welfare club)These modern day “nancy boy” drivers needn’t bother applying as the first part of the job will be sheeting and roping the various trailers each motor has been allocated to the required circa 1970s standard, yes its not your usual “jolly boy’s” run round the circuit on a Saturday & Sunday with bouncing trailers,oh! no they will be pulling various revenue earning loads, coils, timber, stillages, reels, pallets ect.ect.Fergie is flying over from France(if Edinburgh airport is open that is!)to judge the quality of the sheeting and roping and award the winner a hamper containing a Brie cheese and a bottle of French plonk! So,thats the top end organised but we have the 40th supposedly travelling north from Radnorshire, thats if they can get it assembled in time to make the trip! as there’s no decent traffic out of that part of the world I understand that the Renegade has organised an artic tipping trailer loaded with Quarry bottoms, but the Big J won’t have any hydraulics on it as the “tight wad” quarry owners want it back on the stock heap by Wed next week!! and I had a job for that load,I’d got it sold to some ■■■■■■!! Santa Claus had offered to bring it up to Shap, but he would have to do a change over as he is very busy on other work that night I believe!.I think “H” has offered to run it back to Wales but is demanding “quadruple” time plus two day’s in lieu and two nights out!! Bit steep, but we’ll have to accede to his demands as he is claiming solidarity with the rest of the brothers!Look out for further up-dates because if we get anymore snow they’ll not be able to get over Shap! Santa will,of course, 'cause him and Dave will be “airborne”!!!Catch you on the Ice.Dennis.

Must have missed it the first time round, so the mystery continues.

Now Dennis you have assumed that the owner of the Radnorshire Big J is a quarry haulier. The firm has pulled curtainsiders, boxes, also tipping tralers, flats, trombones, plus various other trailers, also run rigids. Can’t recall any of the regular quarry hauliers having a Big J.One did have a brand new Guy Warrior six wheeler in 1965 with an AEC engine.
The firm that had the Big J have a variety of other businesses,so they are not totally reliant on haulage.
Cheers Dave.

In 1970 I tried to buy an A licenced Warrior Light 8 from a chap in Kendal called Jim Tolfrey who traded as Furness Road Services. His main traffic was out of Barrow Steel but the Guy had been parked up for 3 years so even though the licence was still in force it wasn’t possible to transfer the licence to Bewick Transport.Tolfrey didn’t drive the motor himself as he was a “gentleman owner”.I knew the driver who’d driven it from new in 59/60 and was now working in one of the engineering works in Kendal by this time.Anyway he told me he could come out over the weighbridge in Barrow with a 17ton payload at 24 ton gross! No it didn’t have an 8LXB in it but an AEC 7:7/5 spd/Eaton 2 spd drive axle. His back traffic was mainly basic slag in bags to the West coast and Furness areas.Anyone for a spot of “handball” the farmer “claims” to have a bad back!!! Dennis.

As I have said many times on these threads,my dad drove for an animal feed firm all his working life. The farmers used to
go missing when they heard the lorry coming,as in those days, most of them had several gates to open leading to the farm. One or two would help, some glad of someone to have a chat to.I used to say to my old man,why don’t you get on a tipper or anything as he had passed the class one.He used to say, driving tippers ain’t healthy for you.I didn’t think carrying two cwt sacks up half rotten grannery steps was very healthy.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
An ode from Dennis and Harry.

Christmas day is very nigh, will the BIG Big J appear,
Can Dave show us the picture, and put us off our beer,
Or can we go on boozeing, and sink a dram “a few”,
Get Brahms and Liszt on Santa’s day, or shed a tear or two.

Harry Longfellow

A very merry Christmas and prosperous new year to everybody.

thanks harry long retired.

I think you can go on boozing Harry,my man is going to gather the pics of the Big J and a load of others up over the christmas break. He will most certainly be coming up with the pic as he doesn’t make rash claims.Hopefully have a load of pics for the Welsh Border thread.
Cheers Dave.

Happy Christmas to all on the thread.

Aye Dave but it might be your claim that will be “looking rash” if your mate fails to “deliver”!!!Dennis.

Dennis I must have been driving one last Saturday night as I woke up on Sunday morning with a bad back and a sore right knee, anyway I have asked Santa to deliver you one next weekend so if it don’t turn up there is non and don’t try to contact me if it does as I will be out of the country for a few days laying low :unamused:

Seasons greetings to you Johnnie :stuck_out_tongue:

Eyup Johnnie,it was the same unit I used for two Ramsey trunks and a Castletown trunk last night, thanks for filling her up.
Somebody in t’pub told me another 240 Guy was coming over from Heysham on the night ferry so I went down to the terminal for 0530 this morning but it never showed up.I took me camera as well :stuck_out_tongue: .

hiya,
You see Chris you overslept i’d been, tipped and was on the ferry at that unearthly hour, ten minutes sooner and you would have had a clear arse -end shot as i was driving on but then this thread would have been dead, just pleased your good lady was lying on your shirt tail keeping you bedfast.
thanks harry long retired.
PS SOM and Welsh Wales did’nt have the monopoly of the beast, i’m a red and ruster we had a depot full of “em”.

If this “statement” is in anyway correct then “H” is making the sensational claim that BRS had a depot full of Guy Big Js with 8LXB engines!!! Sort of takes some of the aura and intreague from the build up to “the photo” been published on the thread don’t you think? I mean,BRS running 8 LXBs!!! Some accountant at Head Office must have been ■■■■■■■■■ I thought a RR engined chassis or at best a ■■■■■■■ one was the BRS standard. Now “H” drops this "bombshell"No wonder he’s composing poetry!!What blend of Malt is he on? 100% proof I think!! Dennis.
