GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

We had hundreds of J’s at the Midlands BRS depots, in fact at one time we had our own production line at Guys, I can remember at least 25 different engine options up to 375bhp but I never saw an 8lxb. I think Guys could never get a sniff in the queue for Gardner engines behind ERF, Foden or Atkinson, we had a lot of 180’s with the later fibreglass grille with Fuller boxes but they could only run at 30.5 ton. For higher weights we had 280 Rolls or 290 ■■■■■■■■ these were instantly recognisable by the big dustbin vertical stack at the back, on the left for the Rolls and on the right side for the ■■■■■■■■ My own favourite (the best truck I ever drove) was RUD 280M with the american version of the ■■■■■■■ 290 with the big blower, in the mid 70’s fully freighted this would eat 110’s or 88’s, unlike the Gardners it had a good heater too, fuel consumption was evil, top speed I don’t know, I used to chicken out at the end of the clock    .
I’m not saying they never made one with an 8LXB but I used to go in Guy Motors on a weekly basis for spares and went to college with a lot of the apprentices from Guy’s but I never saw one . Surely someone would have a picture of a rare machine like that.

My sentiments exactly Trev.but the SOM lads won’t have none of it!!! You have summed up the matter brilliant mate.Cheers Dennis.

I always liked the look of the Guy Big J.I know they had the same moter panels cab as the Seddon, but the Guy always looked a nicer looking lorry in my opinion. Surely someone would adapt one to put whatever engine in it.If that bloke could get a Merlin engine in a Rolls Royce,I’m sure they would get an 8LXB in a Big J.
Cheers Dave.

There is no question that they fitted the 8 LXB in to the Guy, or the fact that Smith of Maddison had several of them. The crux of the matter is, that Dennis wants absolute proof, and that means at least a photo of the last 2 cylinders hanging out the back, or actually being led by the hand, and shown one for real. Only then will he be happy !! :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Well Fergie, the quest goes on.Dennis requires proof,so we will have to keep bumping this thread until a new member who joins will come up with the necessary pics.
Cheers Dave.

Right lets examine the evidence so far.We know that ERF,Atkinson,Seddon and Foden all fitted 8LXBs.I have operated two of those named and have looked at the engine in the Seddon and Foden but I have never seen an 8LXB in a Guy big J!Based on what Trev H says as well from first hand knowledge of his visits to Fallings Park and the fact that no-one else(other than the motley crew of ex SOM drivers!!!)have come forward to verify the fact that Guy’s did in fact fit the 8LXB! This I find most strange unless SOM got the only ones produced and they were built in the utmost secrecy during the night and by the “management” then sneaked out before the workforce clocked on next morning!!! If we don’t mind we’ll have “Fergie” claiming to have driven one next!(Them French “magic” mushrooms are powerful gear I believe!) I liken this quest to somebody who gets done for murder but they can’t find the body!!! Cheers everyone don’t give up Dennis.

Hi Fergie,

It makes no odds to Dennis, the fact that both you and I have driven them, grease monkeys have worked on them, other drivers have sworn that they have seen them,Dennis has a fixation,or perhaps a fetish on the Guy/240 combo, the fact that no one can lay their hands on a picture means absolutely nothing, but heh,let him go on with himself.!!! :astonished:

Rgds to all,

David

Looks like we have what I would describe as a “Mexican stand off” then Lads!!! Dennis.PS I bet Fergie is desperately trying to find a shot of an Invincible with an 8LXB engine!!!

I think Dennis old mate, the odd’s seem to be swaying towards there actually was a Guy Big J with an 8XLB engine.
Cheers Dave.

I don’t want to appear to be casting doubt on people’s memories, but we’ve already had anecdotes from people involved at Guy Motors who quoted the actual numbers of Big J4Ts which had 8LXBs installed. The number was in the high thirties I think, so it’s not just the SoM chaps who have recalled them.

Would it not be worth contacting the HCVM archivists at the museum at Leyland for some help to solve this?

Bewick I thought that now might be a good time for the voice of reason to re appear.  Why would they have wanted to get in that queue and if I’d have had one I’d have ordered the 375 horse version even at 30.5 ton. :open_mouth:

Excellent idea Marky! I wonder if there is anyone from Gardner still who might re-call how many 8LXBs were shipped to Fallings Park? I bet the drivers of those 4 wheeler ERFs and Fodens that delivered the engines from Patricroft could help shed light on the matter! I just find it incredible that no photographic evidence exists at all.I have the book on the history of Gardner but it only lists the number of engines delivered to the various chassis builders and not the engine types.Cheers Dennis.

How U keeping “Carryfast” my old sparring partner? Now come on before we get into this serious matter about 8LXBs which, lets face it,is way above your pay grade!tell me which secure facility were you held in and when were you pronounced fit to be once more inflicted on the public at large and this site in particular? A 180LXB was quite sufficient for my 30.5 tractors I’ll have you know! and the 240LXB spot on for the 38 ton motors. So un-less youv’e anything constructive to offer the thread you can Foxtrot Oscar and go and annoy someone else!!! Don’t take it personal its just that you have this effect on those of us who have always operated within the bounds of common sense.Bye bye Bewick.

Never mind Dennis.Ice road truckers is on at 9pm,carryfast can go and watch his American heroes do battle with the Alaskan wasteland.

Hiya Dave we should have a whip round and send him up to Alaska for a trip with one of those lads!!! I’m sure that experience would give him a differen’t perspective on life! but then again thats where he might have been putting the "polar bear " straight on how to drive a “big rig”. Cheers Dennis.

Dave there’s a well known saying that a dog is a good judge of character! so how long do you think the "bold one " would last? they can be very nasty a team of Huskies, they’d have him torn apart before he could shout “help” Cheers Dennis.

Although admittedly I’m no big fan of ■■■■■■■ powered wagons does all that mean that Trev_H and his guvnor should also have been locked up in a secure place too for the protection of all those sane lot who would have stuck a zb great big Gardner in the best truck he ever drove instead of that turbo charged 290. :open_mouth:

Ah! so youv’e finally owned up to spending time in a “secure facility” Carryfast or maybe the nurse is standing over you at this minute ready to bang you back up when your money runs out for the computer!!! Look Carryfast a ■■■■■■■ engine is far superior motor than the crap you get a “double hard on” over!! Cheers Dennis

That was’nt meant as an admission it was just an observation that if I’ve got to be taken away by the lot in white coats for overpowering a Big J then obviously to be fair that must also apply to Trev_H and his guvnor and the bosses of the factory for daring to drive, order, and fit anything more powerful than the 240 Gardner in one. :open_mouth:   .But I don’t think that Trev_H would have complained to his guvnor about the ‘insanity’ of ordering a 290 ■■■■■■■ for his wagon instead of a 240 Gardner and I’m sure that Guy’s management would’nt have been taken away to a secure institution for not bothering to get on the waiting list for 240 Gardners when they could fit those ‘far superior’ motors available from the competition.Although having said that it would have gone even better with one of those ‘crap’ two strokes in it . .
