Nice move to re-open this fine thread Dave. Here is a Big J that is in hiding but no 8LXB. No cab soon either by the look of it.
Looks like someone hiding behind it,trying to find the 8LXB by the looks of it .
Cheers Dave.

Been busy over the weekend Dave visiting friends! However isn’t a pity that Rayluv and his club president were not having their AGM in the phone box and the Big J was doing 56MPH at the same time!!!Dennis.

Got it’s own communication system.
hiya …you may well laugh i bet rushgreen would make 5 grand out of that wreck the windscreen alone would be £250 maybe more and theres a sheet /name board that would be £250. i recon the flat cab one is maybe a 8 LXB. where are they roughley i may be intrested in the fibre glass roof panel.
John
I’ve had a Forensic scientist (Yappie) look very closley at the pile of junk and he is confident that there is an 8LXB in there so he’s just nipped off to get the jumper leads and some easy start and he reckons he can drive it out of there!!! That would cap the SOM lads if it was an 8LXB (and me as well I would need some easy start as well as the motor!!) Dennis.
Now pay attention all you SOM lads this is a shot of an 8LXB in a “proper” motor!! and is the exact shot I’m looking for on an SOM Big J!!! This particular Atki came to us from Vic Wild S.O.T. and its reg was TVT***L it was 3 year old when we got it and it was put to work in the McGuffie fleet. Its spec was 8LXB/Fuller 9509/Kirkstall HR axle. Its only draw back was it was manual steering otherwise spot on!Bewick.I don’t seem to have a complete shot of this Atki but I think there is enough on two to get the idea!!! Bewick.
Is that a Detroit Diesel V8 in there ?

It just seemed a bit on the quiet side tonight Dennis so I thought I would start a debate ?

Now then Dennis, don’t give up just yet, there might be one lurking somewhere
We had hundreds of J’s at the Midlands BRS depots, in fact at one time we had our own production line at Guys, I can remember at least 25 different engine options up to 375bhp but I never saw an 8lxb. I think Guys could never get a sniff in the queue for Gardner engines behind ERF, Foden or Atkinson, we had a lot of 180’s with the later fibreglass grille with Fuller boxes but they could only run at 30.5 ton. For higher weights we had 280 Rolls or 290 ■■■■■■■■ these were instantly recognisable by the big dustbin vertical stack at the back, on the left for the Rolls and on the right side for the ■■■■■■■■ My own favourite (the best truck I ever drove) was RUD 280M with the american version of the ■■■■■■■ 290 with the big blower, in the mid 70’s fully freighted this would eat 110’s or 88’s, unlike the Gardners it had a good heater too, fuel consumption was evil, top speed I don’t know, I used to chicken out at the end of the clock
.
I’m not saying they never made one with an 8LXB but I used to go in Guy Motors on a weekly basis for spares and went to college with a lot of the apprentices from Guy’s but I never saw one . Surely someone would have a picture of a rare machine like that.
