GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

Carryfast,
My boss was no fan of the big ■■■■■■■ or Rolls they drank fuel at an alarming rate but he couldn’t get 240 Gardners or there would have been one in it !
And thats the point you miss, as a driver the ■■■■■■■ was the best I drove, but if I had to buy the fuel it would be a Gardner every time! and really the 240 could get a crack on. In fact I’d wager that a 240 Gardner would still get better fuel consumption and faster journey times than the current FH13 440 I drive today, no electronic limiters then.

Just about anything without a limiter would be faster than anything fitted with one.  But the ■■■■■■■ and the Gardner both had in common the fact that they were relatively inefficient zb great big motors which put out zb all power outputs relative to their size.In the ■■■■■■■■ case they turbocharged the thing to make it give out some more power which made it smoke under load and drink fuel in the Gardner’s case they did’nt so it was relatively more economical but relatively less powerful. But if you were running at 38 tonnes gross there’s no way that you’d keep up with a 300 + horse wagon on the hills with a Gardner powered Big J and comparing like for like if both did’nt have a limiter fitted .Which is why I’d have put a Detroit in that Big J instead of a ■■■■■■■ or a Gardner and the fuel consumption could look after itself. :laughing:Having said all that maybe if Leyland had turbo charged the old 680 motor like DAF did they’d have had something even better to put in it to save some diesel while still giving out enough power for the job but Bewick would probably have had all the management there sectioned if they’d done that so the Dutch still would have won in the end. :open_mouth:

Carryfast iI think ive got to agree with Dennis on this one only ever had one detroit in a TM we called it the school girl it looked great round the houses and every one wanted a go in it get it out in the country or on a good climb and there was nothing there all scream and no go and had the econony of a nimrod But also had a TM with a 290 big cam in ex crosby doors after a trip to ■■■■■■■ uprated pump injectors set up and a tune went like the clappers and didnt drink as much as the detroit in fuel so ■■■■■■■ every time

we are going over old stuff here surely carryfast was probably right firms should have put the bigger dd engine in bewick has his opinions as is his right I never drove an 8lxb I did have a tm with 290 ■■■■■■■ and it was a great truck I also drove a big j 6 legger with a reefer for about a month and it was old but could march on cannot recall what lump was in it , however as an employed driver never really worried about mpg so I suppose it depends which side of the fence you are sitting not to say these motors never existed would love to see one , a word of warning as I wrote on this thread ages ago don`t google guy big j as all you will get is gay ■■■■ sites haha , a little word for harry I work in bloomsbury now near where you stayed for your trip to london you were lucky to get back from kentish town unscathed as a guy I work with said they have 2 bouncers on the door of the kentucky fried chicken place only 2 allowed in at one time after the pubs and clubs have chucked out its like dodge city he told me good w/end to all fred

That’s a good analogy some only had a 6V71 in them but the real goers had much more powerful motors. :open_mouth:

Finally we have the proof Dennis has been asking for and photographic evidence to boot, A GUY with a GARDNER 8LXB, this should stop all the argy bargy and prove once and for all most old drivers can tell very tall tales and as long as an extendable trailer!!

Mind you I’m not to keen on the ‘GUY’S’ hairstyle but it proves it comes from the Seventies, Cheers Franky.

hiya,
Just pleased we can put this to bed at last, when i drove a Guy i sported a hair style a bit like this guy.
thanks harry long retired.

Dennis

You should have had a career in selling fertiliser instead of transport. Look how fertile your thread has become, it grow’s and grow’s!
You surely missed your calling!
Alex

None of you blokes have mentioned this and i personaly never saw it done but i drove a Borderer with a Gardner 180 that blew dark/black smoke all the time. They may have been pulling me leg but was told the previouse driver had filed something down in the injector pump to let more fuel in and filed too much off

Nice try Dave !

On that wheelbase that will be sporting either a 505 AEC or a Leyland 500 fixed head. As an N reg my moneys on the latter. Remarkable that it has dodged the gas axe if it has the Leyland grenade in it.

And I’m suprised that the"Renegade" hasn’t got the technology to impose a “Gardner240” badge onto the grille!! Anon.

Dave, all the later ones had that Leyland badge even with a Gardner lump ! Most of the 6 legger 24t rigids from 74 on got that Leyand 500 fitted.

To be fair Trev,if Dennis believes it, I’m inclined to agree.
