Com’on Dave if they let Carryfast loose among the sheep on Shap Fell it would be the News of The World running the story not S4C channel !!! Cheers Dennis.

I think those Westmorland sheep will be safe, Dennis - they’ll outsmart him

Ubym is about right 240 the thread is about played out through no fault of mine !! But before we send in the men in white coats with a net to remove Carryfast I would like to fire one more grenade in!! What ever happened to the “great” Foden 2 stroke ? Maybe Carryfast could give us the benefit of his de-ranged logic as to why the Foden factory at Sandbach didn’t drop the alternative engines ( Gardener & ■■■■■■■ ) and step production up to 24/7 to satisfy what was at the time , no doubt, an insatiable demand for the engine by British operators !! I remember as a lad growing up in Kendal in the early 60s a Foden factory artic loaded with test weights used to come thro’ every day on its way to the top of Shap and back to Sandbach .What a B****y noise it made when the driver gave it some clog pulling out along Shap road at the noth end of Kendal !!I should be able to claim for damage to my young eardrums !! I can still hear the noisy B*****d . Regards Mutt & Jeff --Bewick.

I knew you wouldn’t go away Carryfast, don’t you go letting these sensible people put you off of your quest for the hills to resonate with the music of a howling Jimmy pulling 50tons of 80pence per mile freight to sunnier climes, you’ll soon outcheap all the Eastern Europeans :open_mouth:

It’s alright for you but I’m stuck here amongst all these sensible people while you’ve escaped across the Atlantic where it’s probably going to take the Yanks at least another 20 years to catch up with the sensible Brits and Scandinavians and increase the weight limits over there to 60 tonnes gross and put a 240 Gardner and a 6 speed box in that Pete. :open_mouth: :unamused:

Yes I see what you mean, you could never accuse our neighbours over the pond of being sensible  By the time the weights go up over there I’ll be on my yacht relaxing in a bay somewhere in the Carribean, just a small matter of a lottery win that seperates me from my true vocation :open_mouth:

I can just see all of those old yank operators and drivers and ex GM investors and management thinking what might have been if only they had’nt wasted all that time producing over 3 million two stroke diesels and developing the 60 series instead of just buying out Gardner engines and producing the 240 instead. But you’re right you could never accuse the neighbours across the pond of being ‘sensible’ depending on your definition of ‘sensible’ and which side of the pond you mean and on which side of the pond you’re on.

those foden 2 strokes were really noisy when I was growing up in the 60s in north london there was a pioneer concrete plant near us and our road was a short cut thru to new north road (the A1) we lived in a first floor flat and the crittal windows would rattle like mad when a foden went up the hill, in the summer what ever the temperature the windows had to be shut as you could not even hear the radio or tv I was probably watching blue peter or captain pugwash memories

Bewick,

I have stood back and watched in amazement at this thread, now on page 5!

You will recall I mentioned, only in passing about the 240 engined Guy I collected from SoM Newton Le Willows Depot, although pictures are not forthcoming, quite a few mechanics/drivers and others have confirmed either driving or working on them,so be a good chap and accept it DID occur, although I do admit there does appear to be a lack of photo or paper evidence to substantiate my SoM thread.

Either way,take it easy,

David

I am not disputing this but I asked earlier as I have very little knowledge of garder engines would this have been a v8 or straight 8 and if it was a straight 8 how long was it,

The Foden two stroke was noisy, but it did sound nice from a distance. A chap called Freddie Brace from Hereford ran two Foden eight wheelers with two strokes out of the local quarry. I drove a Commer Maxiload with TS3 two stroke, good lorry, but you had no engine braking whatsoever…,good job it had full air brakes.
Cheers Dave.

Hi ubym344,
They were straight eight’s,no idea how long, thats what half the dispute is about, being too long for a Guy Big J. ■■■■ Ive kicked the argument off again. :unamused:

Hiya David I was or am only trying to prize out of the dim and distant past a photo/brochure or some spec sheets that show an 8LXB Guy Big J !! Better still someone who was an ex Guy employee or as I said James Smith does not answer my calls !!! But I do find it odd that there has been a lot vague indications as to weather or not there were 8LXB Guys particularly one or two ex SOM lads!! Anyway it has certainly created an interesting thread rightly or wrongly !! I will have to come up with another thread that proves just as stimulating to "The Salt of the Earth "that follow this site. Maybe a discussion on GM 2 strokes ■■? then again I don’t think it would be a good idea either when Brain surgeons like Carryfast are lurking about on the site !!!

Hi Dennis,
carryfast will be too busy trying to lick Cadbury’s in to shape.now that Kraft have got their mits on them. :smiling_imp:
Cheers Dave.

They were two pots longer than a 6LXB !!! Only jesting !! I would say the straight 8 was between 6/7ft long and the problems arose when the engine was shoe horned into the 9ft 6" W.B. chassis . It was OK when the new generation of chassis were launched i.e. 10ft 8" atkys and Sed atks as well as the B & C series ERFs. Hope this explanation helps Cheers Bewick.

Yea Dave I would suggest to Kraft that they go back to collecting their milk from Shropshire by canal barge !! and make Carryfast the captain ( was called the steerer ) but give him a horse to use !! that should get him excited as I reckon it would be faster than installing a GM 2 stroke !! Cheers Dennis.

Probably for the same reason that we did’nt see any yank drivers clamouring to emigrate to the UK in the 1960’s and 1970’s,to work for Brit employers driving Gardner or Foden two stroke powered heaps around Britain at 40 mph, having got fed up with driving noisy Detroit powered beasts across the States at 100 mph.Or for the same reason that GM were’nt so impressed by the Foden two stroke that they dropped ther own one and produced the Foden one instead under licence.

According to a workshop manual gathering much dust, the 8LXB crankshaft was 6 foot 5.5 inches.

Don’t tell Carryfast Ubym as he will be immediatley converted to the merits of Gardener engines as I think he could defo be a passenger on the "other bus !!! You should have put 8LXB in not 8xlb !!! Cheers Bewick.

phil the book:
Hello i hope you dont mind me putting my 10 pence worth in i had the unluck to drive a guy demo for a few weeks i the early 70s and being rather on the tall side getting in the cab was an effort the seat never went back far enough and up or down for that matter the clutch was like rock and the gearstick had the range change button on one side and a clutch brake button on the other this in turn vibrated on your left thigh causing allsorts of pains and bruising and discouloring of the skin.Being tall you had to stoop forward to look under the sunvisors which inturn were fitted to some kind of glove box bolted to the roof after a day in a semi seated feutal position the best thing about the guy was getting out of it although that Gardner 240 was a lovely lump its just a shame that we could not get it into a good british chassis or cab…

this should get your left leg twitching then…

if you guys (pardon the pun) look on marc’s bubblemans scrapbook thread there is a salvesons big j with a gardner engine badged up. and it sure as hell looks like a 240 badge to me  go have a look.
