More lightweight banter from the “Renegade” !!! You may not know it Dave but Carryfast is a deadly serious individual and you have just Diss’d his favourite pop star !! Ordinary tranquelizers will no longer have any effect on him and I will have to look and see if I have any Horse tranquelizer left in the shed !! Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dennis,
If you can’t find the horse tranquiilizers,I may be able to borrow an Elephant gun to put him out of his misery. Anyone who champions American junk against good British engineering, needs their goolie’s sawn off with a briar.

Carryfast seems to have disapeared of the site ( well you would if the entire content of the thread was negative towards your input !) sounds like he would be ideal material to stand as a prospective Conservative candidate in one of the Valley’s !!!

We could have a whip round, then he could stand as a conservative for Bedwellty, and see if he could win Neil Kinnock’s old seat,he used to talk hot air as well. Sorry carryfast diddn’t mean to be nasty. :smiling_imp:

Seriously Dave he could be a prospective Tory candidate and if David Cameron has visited this site he probably I.D.d Carryfast as a future Transport Minister !! Carryfasts first White Paper would I imagine go somthing like this “” to all test centres"" Any tractor units recording more than 5M.P.G. are to be given immediate proibition notices !! Hi Dennis,
With the rate of fuel duty, it would generate a huge amount of revenue for David Cameron to spend on good causes, such as getting all the closed down engineering plants up and running to build Detroit Diesel engines. This country would then be able to call itself the State of United Kingdom. :unamused:
Cheers Dave.

You mean the 51st State of U S of A don’t you Dave !! I think this thread is about done ! don’t you ? When we are reduced to taking the P**s out of a sad (extremely sad) individual !! Not only that but I still havn’t seen any concrete ( Tarmac Topmix ) proof that Guys used the 240 Gardener !! Dismally Yours Dennis.

Hi Guys, I was speaking to my brother today, the two of us worked at Millars of Abington. He was on the night shift for many years and Smith of Maddiston trunkers used to be in the garage most nights getting repairs, mostly trailer lights, bulbs, wiper blades etc. I’ve been following the great debate about Guy big Js being fitted with 240 gardners. He confirmed to me that Smiths had a load of them, and when they stopped production they bought Seddons with the 240 engine. I would also like to say that the gardner engine at that time was most reliable and efficient. The mileages that these engines covered was unbelievable considering that engine oils were not as they are today.Anyone who thinks the Yanks could make anything close to Gardner should really be taken away with the men in white coats.

Welcome to the thread Mechanic youv’e been keeping stumm while all this controvesy has been raging !! I suppose I will have to accept that SOM did run some 240s but I don’t see how it was" loads" as Gardeners didn’t build a " load " and even then Guy’s were about 5th in line and only then if Leyland allowed them to have some !! I suppose there wasn’t much call to use a camera in the " middle of the Nicht " at Abingdon but it would be great if there was an old photy of one at Millars !! I hope that Carryfast reads your quote! but I’m afraid it will take a bigger lump hammer that youv’e got in your box to get thro’ to that guy !! Many thanks Bewick.

Bewick was’nt it you yourself who said that anyone who worked on nights for a long time was a bit strange? If I remember rightly we would have been a bit worried about anyone who’d have said that they’d have preferred to take our Gardner powered yard shunter on a 400 mile night trunk instead of a DAF with nearly 300 horse let alone a 400 horse TM if we’d have been lucky enough to have had one  But maybe we would’nt have thought that he was totally beyond help if it had that eight cylinder 240 Gardner in it.

Look Carryfast you really are beyond help !! We once ran an 1968 F reg atky mk1 150 LX /DB6spd/BDR and it regularly covered 390 miles on its trunk (loaded both ways) and I regularly filled it up my-self and it used between 39 & 44/45 gal depending on the weather up and down the M6 – now that is what you call profitable operation my son!! Regards you Cab Happy Hero Bewick.

But would it have been as profitable in the 1980’s running at 32 or 38 tonnes, fitted with a tacho, when the driver ran out of hours half way through the shift and could’nt fiddle the hours to get home

sammyopisite:
Carryfast this was nearly 40 years ago it was one of the first in this country and it was only rated at 290bhp at that time and needed to be pushed all the time but it was at the same time as the 240 gardener was out and we had an Atki with one in and matched to a ten speed fuller and that had a top speed of 38 mph against 46 for the ■■■■■■■ with 6 speed ZF and I know the D/D as been developed a lot since then.

cheers Johnnie

A 290 horse Detroit or a 250 ■■■■■■■ with a 6 speed box running at 60 tonnes when they could have been using a 600 horse + 16V71 and a you lot say that I’m mad

Look here Carryfast we ran a respectable operation and probably there are 200 former employees out there who would testify to that !! We were never prosecuted for any drivers hours offences either and we had plenty of silent checks in our time as well !! although you were obviously employed by an outfit that could only survive by running bent as you seem to know all about it !! Pity you were unable to get a start on a decent firm as you might have a different view on the industry now rather than sitting in the corner with a bucket over your head and only responding when someone gives it a crack with a hammer !! You defo are a cert for a part in the remake of The Clockwork Orange . Keep shiny side up !! Bewick.

It’s alright for you but I’m stuck here amongst all these sensible people while you’ve escaped across the Atlantic where it’s probably going to take the Yanks at least another 20 years to catch up with the sensible Brits and Scandinavians and increase the weight limits over there to 60 tonnes gross and put a 240 Gardner and a 6 speed box in that Pete. :open_mouth: :unamused:

I can just see all of those old yank operators and drivers and ex GM investors and management thinking what might have been if only they had’nt wasted all that time producing over 3 million two stroke diesels and developing the 60 series instead of just buying out Gardner engines and producing the 240 instead. But you’re right you could never accuse the neighbours across the pond of being ‘sensible’ depending on your definition of ‘sensible’ and which side of the pond you mean and on which side of the pond you’re on.

Brilliant, with all due respect to carryfast, but that last page had me in stitches.

if its of any interest to you i know for a fact that jw alexander of coatbridge had a seddon tractor unit with a 240 gardner engine when i worked there [similar cab to guy] cheers

I am losing the will to live does it matter what b____y engine it had in it the work was the same as well as the pay not very good long days dirty smelling of derv moaning with other drivers when waiting to tip, only kidding guys but this is becoming a boring thread
