Has anyone had the temerity to ask to see their old photographs?

It seems that Longtons are long gone but it might be the one that belonged to M A Evans as they are based around the same area as Chadderleys. I will contact Evan’s on Monday to hopefully get some more info and, if possible, pics. I’m still baffled however by the Glasgow reg no.

I e-mailed M A Evans over the weekend and got a reply this morning. I have asked Roy for some additional info and hopefully can add to this soon.

Good morning
It was bought second hand from Chaddesley Commercials of Kidderminster (John May). It was advertised in the commercial motor and I bought it one Saturday morning. It definitely had a Garner 8LXB and it was an excellent lorry.

Elementary Dr. Watson it would be the Atkinson/220 ■■■■■■■■ :open_mouth:

What would flip the accepted ? durability/fuel consumption equation just because the Gardner was in a different chassis ?.
Was it that other chassis types were considered as being less durable than the Atki in their own right to the point of negating any advantages of having the Gardner engine in them ?.

As for the Evans example how do we know that it was a 240 Gardner from new as it left the factory not retro fit much later to make it more saleable, like the sleeper cab ?.

Thumbs up to the last three posts.

Regarding the original/retro-fit question, if Mr. Evans says it originally belonged to either Smith’s or Longton, that would tie it up with the list from BCVM.

Reading the earlier posts, it says that the lorry was new in Scotland, but was converted to a sleeper by Longton’s- the operator with two vehicles on the list. Coincidence or what?

PS I checked the CM advert that Dean put on a previous page- the telephone number is a Kidderminster one. I wonder if Chaddesley commercials keeps records of old transactions? Maybe there is a file in a cabinet, with a portfolio of photographs.

How does the Scottish fuel company fit into the story.

Don’t forget the one that came up for sale in heritage commercial magazine

I e-mailed Roy Edwards back with the following questions:

Was this the one that was for sale in April 1976?

Do you have any pics of it other than the one I attached?

Do you know who the previous owner was?

Did you have a sleeper pod built on to it?

As Roy is now in his mid 80’s I don’t suppose he spends that much time in the office so I didn’t want to pressure him time wise. Hopefully he can provide the answers we need and some pics. On my original e-mail I never mentioned anything about Chaddesley’s so at least he remembered that without prompting. Unfortunately Chaddesley’s are no more but I have spoken to the firm that is owned by the son of John May who sold the truck. They said that they didn’t have any records but the chap I spoke to told me that his Dad had worked for Chaddesley’s at the time and he would see what info he could get from him. Fingers crossed

As soon as I get any replies I’ll stick them on.

I believe the name of this thread should be changed to " The 8 LXB " thread ! So if Guy Motors did manage to get their hands on a few 8 LXB’s I wonder how many de rated 200 bhp 8LXB’s did Seddon Motors acquire , can’t have been many as at the time the idea didn’t catch on nor was it logical but I understood at the time the idea was to match the engine with the DB 6:600 and I only came across one which my Pal Malc Woodhouse senior had bought second hand on an “L” reg but he didn’t run it very long as he didn’t reckon it at all ! IIRC I think I recall that Barry Waddy’s Dad bought it from Bill Ratcliffe who had got it off Malcolm. Cheers Dennis.

Blimey so you think that they ( or some ) might have been derated versions that were put in the BigJ ?.
Who dreamt up the idea of making it an 8 cylinder 14 litre 200 hp motor.Thereby defeating the object of the larger motor.
The smaller ■■■■■■■ 220 then obviously makes more sense it was putting out more power at 1,800 rpm than the Gardner was obviously governed to 1,500 rpm.
That comparison would be a game changer explaining why the lack of demand for it.Any remaining fuel consumption advantages would have been negligable at the price of fuel in the day in addition to the purchase cost difference.
Really can’t understand the decisions being made at the management level of the manufacturers in the day. ( Unless someone wanted to protect the interests of ■■■■■■■ UK :bulb: ).

Only two hundled breedin blake horse power and even that by Gardners dodgy water wheel dyno.

Yes but the ploper ‘240’ would have cost you HK $ 4,000 and that would meant putting the gas axe to an Atki not a Big J.

Carryfast bewicks post was wondering how many derated 8 lxbs were supplied to seddon not guy cheers Ray

Maybe but it raises the question was the 8LXB option offered in the Big J along similar lines.
Maybe because that’s all Guy could get and/or maybe because a DB box was all they could get to fit within the wheelbase.
That would explain why so few orders v ■■■■■■■ 220.

You have a good memory Dennis.

Click on twice.

Thanks Dean for digging out what must be the only rear end shot of a 32/4 8LXB, however the only decent thing on the backend of that Chassis is the 4 Michelin tyres !! As for memory Dean well I can recall things from 40 odd years ago like it was “yesterday” but I can have problems remembering what happened yesterday !!! Cheers Dennis.

Ah well, I can help you there Dennis. Yesterday you finally admitted that yes Smiths ran many 8LXB engined Big J’s and you were sorry that you ever doubted it, also you promised all the contributors a drink as an apology but I can understand if that part slipped your mind. :unamused:

Two of the relevant words in my post Pete were “IF” and “MANAGED” But all I ever asked for was a side view Photo and after 11 years not one has materialised nor has any former Guy employee posted anything on the thread confirming that any were built, quite the opposite in fact from some of the negative comments posted over the years by some that were from Wolverhampton and close to Guy Motors ! Very strange to say the least. And as for your last comment well I am going to invoke “The 5th” on the grounds that if I succumb to that “promise” there would be a queue two hundred yards long at the Beer tent when the next Llandudno show is held, if ever of course.      Cheers Dennis.
