GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

Could the double drive back end be from Albion? just a wee thought cheers Ray

If it helps Dennis, all the Guy’s I drove for SoM had the Fuller RoadRanger box in them.

Well David those two 6 wheeler Big J’s were F reg and I don’t think that the Fuller boxes appeared until about 1970/1 and I can agree that the 205/220 ■■■■■■■ usually had the 610 box behind them and the 240LXB/250 ■■■■■■■ Chassis got the 95909 larger box. But exceptionally we had one 1974 Borderer with the ■■■■■■■ 220 engine but with the 95909 box !!! I reckon it must have been the only box left on the Friday afternoon at Walton -le- Dale so they stuck it into this Borderer along with a Kirkstall D 85 HR axle !      Cheers Dennis.

I worked for a couple of years for a local plant hire company. The low loader was a G-reg Big J with ■■■■■■■ and 10-speed Fuller. The range change was on the side of the gearknob and there was an air-operated clutch brake operated by a small button let into the top of the knob. I often wondered if it was a one-off as I never encountered another to this spec. Any ideas?

Yes. Apparently they used these in some Big-Js. This Richard Stanier picture shows one with a 9-sp Fuller in a Big-J equipped with a 290 ■■■■■■■■ Ro

Richard Stanier would know as he actually owns a Big J 6 x 4 unit

I can’t recall Guy Motors ever using Albion axles only their own in the units and 8 wheelers and Eaton 2 speed axles in their 4 & 6 wheelers ( single drives) so they possibly used the Eaton double drive bogies in their heavier weights ! Cheers Bewick.

As we are on about gearboxes both Ford in the D1000 and BMC/ Leyland Mastiff used the Turner 5 speed box ( IIRC) so who manufactured the 6 speed box used in the Dodge K Series , was it ENV ? or was it an “in house” build ? I always thought a 6 speed box would have been great in the the Ford & BMC coupled to the Eaton 2 speed axle ! Just a day dream of a youngster at the time ! :unamused:  Cheers Bewick.

Hi Dennis, The Dodge we had was an ENV Box but just 5 speed, Of course the Eaton Two Speed was a great combination IMO, Along with its 6354 N/A Perkins Engine, Anyway it was fast enough without having a six speed box, Take care & stay safe, Regards Larry.

This is a copy of the Gardner order form for 6 and 8 LXB engines to be supplied between 1972 and 1975. I also have copies from the despatch book showing when they were sent. It appears that there was indeed a large number of 8LXB’s supplied during this period but not all at once as was previously thought. The copies were in PDF format and this site does not support that so I have taken a screenshot on my phone. I don’t know how to convert them from PDF to JPEG so I will get them scanned and post them all later.

My Dads F Reg D1000 had the Six Speed Synchro box with Two Speed Axle but I’m sure the Dodge’s Ouseburn had were 5 Speed with Two Speed Axle. That D1000 could shift and the ■■■■■■■ V8 sounded lovely whereas the Dodge engines were noisier. Franky.

Well done Dennis Javelin more to prove the believers case, although in strict compliance of the other Dennis’s original request still no photo’s,but with a driver(me),mechanics, and others, surely at some point Dennis must see reason and admit the case of the big Percy being installed in the Big J!

Thanks again for your additional input!

This is a screenshot from the first page of the despatch book showing what is I assume the engine no’s, date supplied and who they went to.

Good find Dennis.

The above evidence is as good as that which Valkyrie got from the CV Museum.

I got it from the Anson Engine Museum. The person that supplied it did say that he had already supplied it a few years ago to the BCVM. If this is the same info and it was posted previously I apologise as I hadn’t seen it. I’ve only been a member for about a year so didn’t trawl through the previous 100 odd pages. On that basis though I don’t know why the thread has continued to discuss it when what you have here seems, to me at least, to be definitive proof.

Definitive proof indeed, well done, and for the record, this is the first time those records have been seen on this site.

we had a D1114 with a 6speed and eaton 2 speed axle , crackin motor
tony

I never gave Geoff at The Anson (an ERF man, but I don’t hold that against him! ) a thought! I know that he has all the records for the industrial/stationary engines, and has all the original wooden moulds and patterns from the factory, but hadn’t considered that he would have the vehicle engine records. I try to visit at least once a year but of course it has been closed to the public for almost twelve months now. At least we have proof now…but no photo as I assume the one I posted a few pages back didn’t get any response from ■■■■■■■ etc so may have been a conversion? :unamused:

Do you mean the R1114 which was the coach chassis? A few of them were bodied for non PSV use

“Sharpened stick poked into the cage time” It appears to me that the hand written journal is a very rudimentary record system considering the monetary value and scarcity of the 8LXB engine at that time in the early 70’s ! :open_mouth: However it does demolish the belief that in fact it wasn’t the Big Three who were Gardners favoured customers but it was indeed Guy Motors ! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: But hold hard Lads I have a theory bearing in mind what the late Trev H maintained in that none of the Guy Apprentices he went to Tech College with ever mentioned the “Unicorn Beast” so I reckon that Guy Motors had what was known as during WW2 as a Shadow Factory i. e. “invisible” and all the 8LXB Guy Chassis poured out of this secretive facility ! Just my conspiracy theory so could the queue to hurl abuse please form up outside Bullys as that is probably where my post will be placed ! Cheers Dennis.

I have to admire your indefatigability Dennis. Anyway don’t shoot the messenger please

IIRC there have been two or three famous RN ships that bore that name ! The last one being a WW2 Aircraft Carrier ! Anyway Dennis at least your name is spelled correctly with two “N” 's as my Mam always used to tell me ! Otherwise if your name was only spelt with one “N” you would really have got some “Wellie” from me !! Plus I might have made the mistake of starting your name with a “P” and not the “D” Cheers Dennis.

Ironically HMS Indefatigable was built as part of the “Implacable Class” aircraft carriers. Rather apt on this occasion  . By the way the Dennis moniker is in respect of Dennis vehicles, my real name is Tommy.
