Just read Peter Davies’ article in October’s Classic Truck magazine on the Big J, and lo and behold (and I quote) “…although no mention appears in its contemporary spec sheets, around 37 8LXB-powered Big J4Ts were built, the majority having entered the fleet of Falkirk-based haulierJ&A Smith of Maddiston.” Sorted, as they say.

Bewick:
Has anyone ever built one, sold one when new, repaired one,DRIVEN one,or at least seen one or possibly got a photo (side view) showing the 8 potter sticking out the rear of the cab .
This was my original post/question over 7 years ago and 140 pages later ------------------

Only 100 pages to go then! On page 240 of this thread the veil of uncertainty will be swiped from our dew-laden eyes and behold, a crisp high-definition photo of an 8LXB jutting from the arse-end of a Big-J cab will herald the apocalypse - I think it’s prophesied in Ecclesiastes - and then…bugger, I’ve just dropped my crystal ball. Robert

Well three out of six isn’t TOO bad Dennis, you have a pic (front view admittedly) and you have folk who have driven them and, presumably, if they drove them they also saw them! Just short of a builder, fitter and a salesman now!

Make that four out of six, Pete- the inestimable Peter Davies is also convinced that “around 37 were built”. Mind you, until Bewick actually sees the White Lady heading down the main hallway at Bewick Towers, nobody’s going to convince him about ghosts either!

Hi Folks. We took Tommy on his final journey on Monday. Over 100 family and friends gathered to celebrate Tommys life. Some from the Haulage industry came along too. We got a wreath modelled on a lorry it was just amazing. Tommy will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
I wrote in this thread on my dad’s behalf as he suffered from Dementia. Alas he never got to see this thread to it’s conclusion. But all is not lost. Tommy was on the Glasgow to St Albans trunk for many years and his sister had moved to Luton to work in the new hoover factory in the 60’s. He used to drop me off for holidays then pick me up a week later. Family from Luton were at dad’s funeral and I happened to ask if they had any pictures of his lorry when he stopped by ? . They said they remember taking pictures of my cousins in the lorries. Let’s hope they have the holy grail pictures. It would be a fitting tribute if Tommy could put this to rest from beyond the grave lol

Now then Young Tommy, take na’ notice of the all the banter ! Sounds like you gave your Dad a real good send off , well done ! Now “fingers crossed” what you have said about some photos that were taken in Luton may “hold the key” and I will be the first to congratulate you ! But look at it this way your Dad will have come up “trumps” from the Big Café in the sky ! and he will be having the last laugh no doubt. Kind Regards Dennis.

Thankyou Denis. Tommy held you and your haulage operation in high esteem. He thoroughly enjoyed all the pictures and stories you have posted in these forums. That part of his memory was fully functional.
Thanks for your kind words Tommy, I also had great respect for SOM, from the days I was just a wee O/D and I used to pop into St Albans depot to pick up bits and pieces for S. ■■■■■■■ that SOM accumulated from their many customers which were no good for them to deliver. They would ring J & W Watts office in London Colney to enquire if that young fella frae Kendal was aboot ! It was always on my way out of London fully freighted ! and it was always “have you got a bit room for a couple of pallets etc from SOM” Aye OK I’ll squeeze them on ! Which meant running into see “Big” Hughie at SOM and he would always say " Luft yer skun Son and I’ll pit it on tap wi the Hyster" magic ! and it was always desperate eh! " Noo then dinna be hingin aboot up the road I want it there sharp in the morning " Well it usually was first off 'cause it was on the friggin top ! Unless it was for Barrow then it would be lunchtime maybe ! The quickest load I ever got out of SOM was IIRC one Friday afternoon and it was a bit of “arm twisting” helped by Harold Dunkerley the J & W Watt manager, well I was empty, can’t recall how it came about, I think I had been held up at Tescos at Cheshunt in the morning. Anyway SOM had a couple of Ford tractors on a trailer in the depot for Preston so with a bit of “give the Boy a bit help he wants away hame” They ( SOM) relented and Big Hughie ran them off the SOM trailer onto my D1000 ! It was no skin off their nose as they would be stuck with their bits and pieces for ■■■■■■■ in future eh! Great load and I tipped it on the way back to Kendal that night ! Cheers Dennis.
