Pretty much on the buttton @franglais and I would only add that I was very pleased with our President of the time, Jacques Chirac, who refused to involve France in an unjustified adventure. As a result he, and France, was vilified by the Yanks (the idiots changed their word for chips from ‘French fries’ to ‘Freedom fries’)
soon went crying though didnt you when you wanted help
Have you seen the level of immigration to this country franglais , don’t believe that rubbish about they’ve halved legal immigration , just look around you , there’s no way any goverment with the best will in the world is getting ing to be able to build enough
But then to prioritise newly arrived asylum seekers over people in this country is a joke , stick them on the council housing list like every one else has to , if they’ve got millions to spare to buy asylum seekers houses , then spend it on our own families / kids
As I say we’ve become the charity shop for the world , no wonder there all desperate to come here
Right or wrong to go into Afghanistan in the first place, and there was lots of controversy about that then and even more later, we then get to the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Ignoring (I know we shouldn’t) the decision to be there, what about the way we (US & UK) left?
A rush-job for political reasons? I think so but others will disagree.
What is pretty sure is that many were left behind. There were schemes set up but they did not all work. Many were excluded from the schemes who maybe should not have been.
Some of those who were deemed worthy of a place of safety were still left behind. And some who did aid the UK, but were refused had their details on file too. They helped the UK, they may not have qualified for various reason, but the act of applying for safety in the UK puts them at danger from the Taliban. The release of their details, and the fact they applied makes them targets.
Also there are details released of applicants already in the UK. As @maoster correctly says.
this puts them at some personal risk, but I think (could be wrong) that the greater risk was to those still held in Pakistan, or the families still in Afghanistan of those who had escaped or tried to escape revenge from the Taliban.
Look, we can bring in interpreters, and their babies, very few would argue with that, but what if the kids are now 25yrs old? What if they are married? What about parents or brothers of interpreters? There does need to be limit.
But all that fall outside will be put at increased risk because it is easier to identify the allies helpers.
Arguably that risk is now passed. The Taliban now have had full access to any records left and have already tortured and killed the families of those who helped us.

The release was under a Tory Gov, but i do not think anyone says the gov of the day was responsible. It was an official or a soldier? Sounds most likely a civil servant of some kind. Not a politician.
To keep the leak a secret for a period, was justified IMHO.
The decision to keep the costs hidden for years? Dunno. That looks more like politics and less like security.

Dozy, if you have the money, consider moving to Hungary, Poland or the Czech Republic, whether it’s a better way of life and cheaper to live there or not, I have no idea.
Apparently many Brits are making the move to snap up a house for £15,000 to £20,000 or rent a property for £150 per month, their economy is booming and thriving, clean streets and better roads.
I had enough of the poles when we were flooded with them before brexit never mind moving in with them Stuar
I’m considering India / Africa as the places must be empty as there all here
I doubt though any of them would be providing me with a free house ha ha
Our emigration plans seems to be 30 miles down the a52 to notts according to the wife .
If this bloody nhs would hurry up with her pension money I’d be retired , but it’s taking an eternity so all plans are on hold until they pay up .
nope they wouldn’t brits that have gone on holiday there recently are reporting that they are being refused entry to hotels with pre booked accommodation.
not to mention all the visas being canceled by 23 other countries
Same here, although it is many years ago now, I bought my place for £7,000, bought the next bit for £1,500 thanks to an advance inheritance from Mum and Dad (the only one I ever got) and then splashed out (after selling flat in UK) £20,000 to extend the house which more than doubled its size.
Bought another parcelle of land recently and now my dog and I can wander at will with access to a large, cool forest, a perfect antidote to the interminable heatwave that we are all experiencing.
A faultless health system clean streets, great services and low tax. Whatever sneers are levelled at France they are like water off a duck’s back because I know where I am better off.
My time abroad seems to be limited to Benidorm , I guess I fit in there as I love my country & Benidorm is like a mini uk
Never had a intrest in anywhere else as I don’t like foreign food
France would be a nightmare with there staple diet being snails , give me a good old beef pie & chips any day
But good luck to those who enjoy living abroad , going to different places , just not for me .
I have though bern to Malta , ibiza , Gran Canaria & a lot of different places in Spain , but I always seem to come back to Benidorm
That’s sounds a nice place to live.
Ha ha, I have only once in 33 years been offered snails, I tried them just that once but, without the garlic paste I might as well have been eating rubber. Staple diet they are not. Never even seen a frog’s leg either, except on a frog in the pond, and certainly never seen them on a menu anywhere. The things some people believe.
I don’t think Dozy would like the offal that’s served in France, the intestines of the animal, or cow or calf tongue to a pig’s cheek.
Pig’s trotters anyone?
Escargot a la Bourgogne is just an excuse to eat melted garlic butter I think. Sandie in Bordeaux served snails Bordelaise once or twice. Smaller snails in a red wine, onion, and bacon sauce.
As you say, no great taste to the snails themselves.
Really no different to eating whelks, cockles etc which are more traditional English fare.
Had frog’s legs a couple of times, including in the Ugly Sisters at Macon. Deep fried, pick up in your fingers and you suck the meat off the small soft bones. No great shakes, but it was there so gave it a go.
I’ve tried the snails a few times, quite chewy, the restaurant may cook them with garlic butter inside the shell.
Horse meat is quite widespread throughout France, many tourists will not know the menu to assume they are getting a steak and don’t understand what it says on the menu, to point to another table and say to the waiter, I will have what he’s having.
A whole octopus in the Basque Country, complete with a lot of black ink which didn’t mix with a fine red wine from the Navarra region.
France is truly a beautiful country, they are lucky as there’s no need to travel abroad for a winter holiday for skiing or other winter sports as they have all the mountains there, the same for a summer holiday, no need go overseas when France has those amazing beaches and resorts.
Back on topic…
The World At One had a lot about the issues to day. After the headlines there is quite a long discussion with one of interpreters whose data was given out. The whole piece including some of the analysis takes up to the half hour mark. Even if you don’t want all of it, the part where he talks about his view and about a friend of his who is still there is worth the time to listen.
The meat of the piece starts about 7min15sec.
personally i dont know what anyone is crying about… if it cost money you can bet ya bottom dollar it will be a darn site less than what has been spent on the illegals. and a far greater amount achieved for it.
people that actualy deserve to be heregets the whining lefties in a lather yet the over 1000 a week illegals are fine…
disgraceful
That is out of order, as are several of your replies on different threads to Franglais, which contain personal insults.
“Attack the post not the poster” is one of the forum rules. Robroy manages to abide by it… although he does get quite close.
aww ducky did i hurt your little sensibilities
he deserves all he gets and unlike him i stand by what i say.
i know he doesnt act like he does on here to people infront of him because if he did he would of learnt not to
anyway im still awaiting your bid for that bridge
