Credit where credit is due; the government is stepping up to the plate and doing the right thing in one regard at least; you may have heard news reports of the clusterf@@k caused by some inept civil servant who somehow leaked the personal details of Afghanis who assisted British forces in the sand pit. At a cost of X million of pounds we are relocating and evacuating these people.
And rightly so I say, they risked their lives so it’s only fair and right I say.
Let’s hope that going forward The Gurkhas also are looked after in similar fashion.
I agree,.and they have spent a lot clearing up after said cluster ■■■■.
But at least money better and more worthier spent, than on the pi55 takers and scroungers lavishing in 4 star hotels with all the trimmings.
If these scum were arrested on arrival instead and vetted, at least it would go some way to identifying who (and what) they are, instead of releasing them into our community.
I am going down this (old familiar) road again because I see it as an ‘admission of guilt’ that by spending this money to rightly protect these people, the govt fully accept what we all know…
That amongst them there are members of Taliban, and maybe Isis terrorists amongst them, who would be carrying out reprisals against these people.
i havent heard about this. is this service men that were brought over here from afghanastan or ones that chose to stay over there.
you beat me too it. if it is people that are already over here … have they slipped up and admited that they are dangerous ala the police force that held a public conference claiming all the locals were safe around this hotel then put armed police on the streets.
No mate, it’s concerning the Afghanis who worked in various capacities for the British forces over there, as interpreters etc. They risked theirs and their families lives at the time and were promised new lives as a result. You can’t put a figure upon how many British lives they theoretically saved at the time. As far as I’m concerned they should be both protected and also welcomed.
I think the leak was largely data of those whom had applied to come to the UK but had not yet left Afghanistan. They are clearly in more danger from the Taliban who now rule the country
The evacuation of Afghanistan was a FUBAR.
From 2021 "Conservative MP and former defence minister Johnny Mercer told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “The reality is we’ve left the vast, vast majority of our interpreters behind so this is going to have a profound impact on people who are still in the country.”
And the story form 2022 of an interpreter who was refused by the UK.
@franglais so what your saying then in your own inevitable style is that it wasnt a breach of where they are in the uk which is bad enough it was a far more serious breach which suggests that the information would of only been accessible higher up the chain… anyone smell a labour cover up
Of course there is another way of looking at it, and that is that if a foreign power had occupied Britain and some British people had aided the invaders, many people would have approved of them being punished.
Some people were executed for that in France after the Liberation. Just as Lord Haw Haw and Amery (John?) were in Britain.
BTW, as far as a Labour cover up is concerned this was done by the Conservative government, it is only now that today the super injunction to keep it secret has been lifted and thus it has been revealed.
are you seriously saying that 2 years ago a document was leaked and the labour gov have decided to bring them back now? as you say there wont be any left so why is it going to cost so much.
not to mention that 2 years ago they still had the asylum route open until labour stopped it 2 weeks ago… funny that maybe they would of had the information on who came here and who didnt
Gurkha’s are now given right of abode in the UK.
Joanna Lumley was very much involved in that campaign. Blair first announced the decision to give them that right, the courts disputed that decision, but it was all tidied up by Brown. Gurkha Justice Campaign - Wikipedia
Sir Sidney Ruff-Diamond was not available for comment.
That is how the current Afghan Gov will look at it.
Those who the UK thought of as helpers will be seen as traitors. They are clearly not safe in the country.
Are the current Gov a legitimate one? Who are we to judge?
Looks to me like the current regime are suppressing large parts of the Afghan native population.
They (the Taliban) came to power in a civil war. Currently only Russia recognises the current Afghan as legitimate.
The local council in our town a few years ago spent 2.2 million on ten houses for Afghan asylum seekers whilst telling anyone saying to
Anyone who had been on the council list for apparently 20 yrs that they hoped they’d not complain
So to me charity starts at home , look after your own first , so I’d of left them where they were and spent the money on the ones who need it , not all brits live lavish lifestyles , some are really struggling to keep a roof over heads / put food on table etc
We seem to be comming the charity shop of the world !!
Afghanistan/Empire/Khyber Pass/Silk Road, all of that. A buffer state and/or a battleground being played with by various Empires including the British and Russian ones.
An Independent state 1920’s until the 1970’s.
70’s 80’s etc, has more relevance to today’s situation. Coup/revolution/civil conflict with multiple Afghan parties involved, and foreign involvement.
Very notably the USSR sent in their own troops, uniting many of the Afghans and attracting western aid to them. At this time the Afghan Mujahadeen were getting support in their fight against USSR from among others, USA, UK, and… Osama Bin Laden. Russia withdraws in 1989.
Late 80’s into the 90’s. The Mujahadeen form a government. Civil war as the Mujahadeen are defeated by the new kids, the Taliban.
Lots going on globally, and this is only a very brief time-line.
2001 Twin Towers attack on the USA. USA and others including the UK go into Afghanistan in pursuit of al-Qaeda, Bin Laden etc.
Lots of controversy about the Bush/Blair decisions, but it happened.
US, UK, etc withdrawal from Afghanistan in 20-teens to 2021.
Obama first wanted to withdraw US troops, but found it difficult to do so safely. The US leaving effectively means all foreign troops leaving. A main hiccup was letting the Taliban back in.
Should the Afghans be left to look after themselves as a small but heavily armed group take over? That is a moral question.
Should the Taliban be left free to (again) support international terrorist groups who attack all of the rest of the world. We can all see that small numbers of people can do immense harm. Loo
So Obama did not feel it safe to leave in case the Taliban regained power. Not just doing “the right thing” for peaceful Afghan civilians but in the longer term, making the world safer for US (and UK) citizens.
Wars are bloody and expensive. Occupation and support in foreign countries is less harmful and cheaper.
But with short memories, short sighted plans, and penny pinching that is often overturned.
Which brings us to the withdrawal and the current situation, but I am off for a coffee.
good thing the ARAP started 1st april 2021 then huh. you know before your whiny bbc article was written. which incidently says the home office ordered a full investigation… so no cover up and clearly nothing to do with the original topic
Why not build more houses rather than ration them?
Different governments have promised more houses, but for years and years, they have failed to build enough of them.
