Leave a gap in the middle
How about placing an upright shovel or the mates seat on the road at the back RH side of the vehicle to show you were broken down, think that was pre mid seventies before hazzard lights were standard.

For the wind to whistle through, and out through to hole in the gater around the gearstick.
Cheers Dave.
Roofracks
& they call 'em the good old days?
Holding a log sheet or later a logbook up,to get a lift back. No lorry would pass you years ago. An unwritten code always give another lorry driver a lift home.
Cheers Dave.
Flashing your lights and holding up your log book to warn oncoming drivers the wheeltappers were about, waving your digicard just isn’t the same.
Dunnage, kept on the catwalk under a tarpaulin & rope.
Catwalk? Good grief some people were spoiled! When I started driving artics the dunnage WAS the catwalk!
Most units in the 80s ,didnt have full rear mudwings ,my dads f12 had a cf trailer flap front and back of the drive wheels ,it had some green canvas rolled up on the front flap so you pull it over when bob tail[i hope that explains it ok ,im sure some get my gist]why was this were full rear wings expensive,
They were when idiot drivers ripped them when coupling.

I thought that harry because there was no air then so the truck sat low ,but looking at photos is most trucks had them ,they must have been a lot cheaper aswell,my dads unit had 4 tyres poking thru the canvass where he couldnt be arsed to roll them up and they had worn thru when he was coupled up to the trailer, lazy and tatty look to a nice lorry
hiya,
I found that dockside shunter’s Dover was an offender, was notorious for dropping
trailers low that didn’t help when having to hit the trailer hard to get under I’ve
dented a few full wings at seaports and very few trailers had low winding range.
thanks harry, long retired.
as already said above I think the 2 piece wings made it easy to fit snow chains(the sign of been a long haul euro trucker) then eventually it turned into a bit of a trend so every tom ■■■■ and harry on local work had them lol
Mercedes even fitted them as standard at one point
What about when we used to have a small shovel so when we had problems in the winter we could get some grit from the little piles by the side of the road where it was hilly, Of course this was long before diff locks were popular, Regards Larry.

Certainly remember having a ‘motorway stick’ for a Gardner engined Atki to save putting both feet on the loud pedel to maintain 54mph on the M1.
