What ever happened to the ‘trapezoid’ shaped curtainsiders often used by the breweries ?
Remember the shaped hands the stuck to the windows with a bit of good old spit on them, With sayings on them like Have A Nice Day, Or By By if you were overtaking someone in a better motor than the one you were driving & you pointed to the sign and had a good laugh, Of course some drivers had ■■■■ Off on theirs and even worse in some cases ., Regards Larry.
How about bad ideas that appear? vehicle trackers and mobile phones!!
what about the row of cd discs in the windscreen to reflect the radar speed gun? …yes i did fall for it!
Mudflaps on front bumper, sunstrips ie.telford truckers club is one i seem to remember and painting mudflaps white and tank straps white especially when tank was black, made them look like ragmans barrows!
Remember the the daft plaques some drivers used to display IE .The Hilltop or Bust, Refering to that awful bloody café called the Hilltop at Blythe, Their tea was worse than ■■■■ IMO, happy Days Eh long gone by, Im sure there must be some drivers still about that can remember this, Regards Larry.
Suedehead:
flashing ya lights on and off when let in overtaking now its a curtious indicator wink wink
how things change ay?
[/quoteIf you did that nowadays, the other driver would think he had a bulb out
Hiya…the flashing in was a night driver thing… before we had mirrors on the passenger side and couldn’t see how
far past you was. the flash shone on the road on your near side then you knew you could pull back on your own side.
John
hiya,
Ah’ the Hilltop at Blyth every driver knew where it was but how many drivers
ever returned after sampling the food and the dishwater cuppa, I didn’t.

The stickers on bottom of n/s window ,it was usually half of a daft monsters face or a pair of legs with knickers round their ankles
or a bloke holding guns against his head ,i had a green monster with its tounge out
TIR plate on your 8 year old Big J running between Cowley and Birmingham.
the big old log sheets before the bloody tachos and when we never heard the word “cholestrol” and smoking gives you cancer, health and safety and when women were happy to put your dinner on the table every night , another good idea which should have died phones in the cab , maybe I am just being a miserable old sod but just been to 2 funerals of good young people in the last few days so in a funny mood .just battening down the hatches and hibernating for a while happy days, fredm

Hiya,
I returned after a fortnight’s holiday to find my motor, (a daycabbed Scania 80
had many additions added during my respite a TIR plate drilled and riveted to
the bumper along with several GB stickers and I think Calais and Le Havre on
the inside of the windscreen all of which had to be drilled and scraped off and
it was a slow and laborious job I might add, on asking the guvnor’ had the old
girl been over the water in my absence was told, no it’s only done one London
and a bit of local shunting, fair play this motor was liveried in the manner of
the “over the water” motors but it never got beyond Dover dropping trailers to
travel unaccompanied and picking up the same as return traffic.

Did you ever find out who did it and why harry it could have been a driver thinking it was his new unit and moving his stuff in a bit too early

hiya,
Can’t remember the “youngster’s” name, it was well over forty years ago, he was
a newbie who had dreams of being a continental driver, but surely not with a
Scania 80 he did get the motor shortly after, I jacked rather than drive the thing
yes I saw it again being driven by “fellow mi lad” yes, complete with a new TIR
plate and multi windscreen decorations, all his dreams come true I guess, I was
happy to have unloaded the heap, and driving a Borderer with a big ■■■■■■■ in
her which was also brand new, I never got to get behind him on the motorway or
I would have taken delight of blowing him off and offering him a box of matches
at that split second when the cabs were side by side.

My all time faves
2 piece mudflaps on the rear axle(The real sign of a European longhaul trucker) although I even saw them on a Bass brewery artic
Spare wheel mounted on the unit, either rear or side of chassis
Pinstriping the outer edge of your wheels white
If I was prime minister I would make all of the above legal requirements to operating a hgv lol
And I would abolish curtainsiders while im at it and only allow high cabs on trucks running to europe
Commercial vehicles with left-hand thread on the near-side wheel-nuts, but no notice or plate informing the driver of such; so he had to guess which way to turn the wheel-brace. Why was this practice discontinued, I wonder? Robert
