Good and bad news from dvla

I sent off for a new passport a while back and thought i’d see if the medical loophole would work. it did, i don’t need to do a medical until 2019 instead of 2015. so that’s the good news.
but my motorbike category has come back with Cat A and the code next to it 79(tri). Does this mean i can’t ride a bike unless it has a sidecar?

forums.moneysavingexpert.com/sho … ?t=4425493 it appears that in the old days you could ride a trike on a car or bike licence, but after a certain date you cant do this on only a bike licence …I think

Whats the loophole?
I’m 41 this year and have to renew next year!

Go to post office that does the £24.50 new photo for the licence and change your photo even if not yet required

New style licence comes with 5 year LGV expiry date

At least that is what has been happening over the past few months

If already got the new style licence then it will not work

Some have found that changing the photo online also works

Your medical won’t be until you’re 45. If you renew it next year, then you’ll probably be 47 before you have to do a medical.

I would of said regardless to what is on your licence the law states that you require
a medical at 45 and then every 5 years after that, to be able to continue driving, so I would of said that if you continued driving after your 45th birthday without a medical you were in affect driving without a licence for that category of vehicle and as such could be prosecuted for that offence. hope I am wrong but that could carry a heavy fine and possibly a ban, is that really worth the risk

79 (tri) gives you entitlement to ride a trike

You need to check the counterpart slip for provisional entitlements if it has an A on it then you can only ride a trike.

Go on - which law states that?

Am i the only one wondering why limeyphil (typical) is looking for/trying out loopholes?

I could have took the loophole route but wasn’t keen to risk it, my firm pays for a medical anyway and I’m happy that I have my licence back knowing I’ve passed the 5 yearly check.

My licence says 47. I’m 45 next year?

Because we are truck drivers and that’s what truck drivers do. :stuck_out_tongue:

No, it means you can only ride a motor tricycle, just as you could under the old classifications. Trikes used to be grouped in with quadbikes and light vehicles (Group B1) which was automatically included on your car licence (Group B). They have now moved them across to Group A (unlimited power motorcycles) but have allowed you to keep your existing entitlement. Motorbikes (with or without sidecar) require a full, unrestricted Group A entitlement.

That’s not a law, that’s a web page which explains about renewing your licence.

The law says I need a medical when my licence expires and thanks to some one in Europe I don’t need to renew it till 2016, it should have been this year.   So when that happens I retire and before you ask I phoned the DVLA to make sure.

Errrr…No.
I got my licence at 43…I did not have to renew until 48, which I did.
At no time was my licence taken from me/expire. I was legal to drive until I was 7 months past my 48th birthday, at which time I took my medical and renewed my licence at the request of the DVLA.
5 years is 5 years…It is not 45 years that is the critical/key point.

this is taken from webarchive.nationalarchives.gov. … tation.pdf

6.4.1. Licensing requirements for this group of drivers are already more stringent than for drivers of small vehicles. They must submit a medical report with their provisional licence application, completed by a qualified medical practitioner, to show that they meet the required health standards. Unlike drivers of small vehicles who get driving entitlement until they reach age 70, they have to renew their driving entitlement at age 45 and every five years after that until age 65, then annually. With each application to renew driving entitlement, they must produce up-to-date medical reports.

this was a consultation paper but the paragraph above list the current rules which are are set out in Part III of the Road Traffic Act 1988, and the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations 1999 (SI 1999/2864),

that’s the law as it stands, drivers who pass their test after this year will have to renew their licences every five years by a self declaration until they are 45 then a medical at 45 and every 5 years after that.

so as I said before you must complete a medical at 45

the new medical rules state that those who have not yet reached age 45 have to do a self assessment medical every 5 years - like the age 70 car one

Those who are aged 45 to 49 require a full D4 medical which will be determined by the expiry date next to the LGV entitlement

Not sure if 5 year self assessment ones extend the D4 one as nobody has reported on that yet
Pass test and first D5 medical age 38 in 2010
5 years self assessment medical age 43 in 2015
D4 medical age 48 in 2020
I think that is how it will go …
