£7 an hour or no job at all. Choose wisely.
I bet bosses love you.
The problem is, or should be, £7 an hour is money you can get doing almost anything else. Jobs that are usually far easier and require less investment than being a truck driver. Driving for that money makes you a mug IMO.
It’s a different mentality ‘up north’ to ‘down south’.
Down here, we have such huge overheads to pay out, that we physically CANNOT work for crappy £7ph rates. If we did, we’d be “paying to go to work” in terms of net outgoings over income.
Up north, something (I’m not quite sure what) is cheaper about the cost of living. It isn’t mortgages/rents because they are still as sky-high as down here. It isn’t food prices in the supermarkets - because they too, have a kind of “national scale” if you like. Neither is it “utility bills” who are quite happy ripping off our northern cousins just as much as we southern folk…
So… Is there anyone out there who can offer a better explanation to “Why northerners can work for £7ph and we darn sarth types cannot” - other than it being some kind of “working class inverted snobbery pride” thing?
Maybe it costs less to get laid up north, or there’s actually still some pubs in their neighbourhood? - I’m open to suggestions here!
Just to satisfy my own curiosity, I compared house prices and rents between your area and mine, and I was surprised at how similar they are…a little cheaper up here, but not as much as I expected. I can only suppose it’s all like that…everything is a little cheaper, and the little things all add up…
how much is a pint in your local? how much is ya fish and chips or a meal in town?
property prices are alot more down south then where I am, York infact as a hell of alot of London business folk living in the riverside apartments because its cheaper then London.
a friend of mine as a smallholding twice the size of mine and tbh in better condition but was a lot cheaper because its in Scotland…
friends of mine rent a farm on the outskirts of York, but the rent on this is alot cheaper then say a 3 bedroomed house in parts of the south…
Contraflow:
I’ve noticed a new trend on here recently.
Someone will come on and say something like:
“Hi, I’m getting paid £7 an hour and I let my boss dry [zb] my arse for that too, is that a good deal?”
Then someone will tell them that it’s not a good deal.
Which it isn’t.
Then lots of people who let their boss dry [zb] their arses for £7 an hour will come on and say that person is just bragging and the OP should crack on with getting his arse dry [zb]ed for £7 an hour.
What the actual [zb] is wrong with you people?
Seriously?
Everyone knows £7 PH is crap. Who’s saying its good ? People may accept it for a variety of personal reasons. Thats up to them, everyone is free to make a choice of their own.
And to be honest, the only people affected by working for £7 PH, is you . The people actually doing it couldn’t give two ■■■■■■

London is in a league of it’s own.
A good sized 2 bedroom terrace with a garden rents for £500pm where I live - and it’s a nice area if I do say so near Manchester. I have friends in London who rent a one bedroom flat about the size of my lounge for £1300pm. It’s nuts. Some would say a mugs game.

as i,m the one who owned up to what i earn on the other thread, and gave reasons to why, i find it strange that those who are moaning and throwing insults around ect are the ones that are claiming they are on the good money?
I’m on sheeeet money for London , but I’d rather push trolleys around Tesco car park than drive a lorry for seven pound an hour. Seriously it’s disgraceful and a joke that anyone would think so low of themselves to do that.
but sorry mate your no better then me, probably worse, you are saying your driving for [zb] money for your area so why stick it, surely jobs in London are alot more easier to come by… with a hell of alot more choice of job then where i choose to live…
Because I start work at 10.30 and on a good day I can be finished by 2.30, I’m getting annoyed if I go past 3.30 . Plus it’s much better than £7.00 obviously and to use others arguments it’s ten minutes by push bike from my house . Despite this ill definitely be leaving before December.
so you are currently doing exactly what I am doing but you accuse me of being disgracefull and a joke? If you are near fulham I can put you in touch with a HR/personell recruitment agency specialising in hotel staff for major london hotels paying more then driving jobs.

no I’m not doing what you’re doing , I’m earning less than I could be because I’m a lazy cxxxt , but it’s still way above £7 ph . As I’ve said I’m now looking to do something different but to make it worthwhile I’ll be doing much longer hours . I’ll probably regret doing it , but it’s got to be done . Seriously if your working for anything near £7 an hour your a complete mug and a disgrace to humanity.

I make 30k, my house is paid for and my wife makes considerably more than me. I could, at 45 retire now if I wished. So call me a mug if you wish. If it makes you feel good, gives you a little thrill…fill your boots.

the disgrace to humanity are the lazy **** to which you admit to being one…
I have worked hard in the past and made sacrifices for what I have now, the job i do now is 7.50 a hr on my doorstep with discretionary bonus… i dont do max hours or anything and average 45 hours a week, leaving me plenty of time to spend with my family and working on my small holding… i,m 42 now and aim to be fully retired at 50 and working full time for myself via my small holding… at a rough guess i have earned this year between 7-9 k breeding game birds this would not have been possible without doing the job I do…
so until you know folks circumstances your armchair insults fall short…
do you still want that contact for the hotel trade, on your doorstep paying more then driving can do part time hours too…

You might be mistaking the prices of houses in London and everywhere in the southeast except where i live…
I live in a 3 bedroomed semi which I have a mortgage of £155k on.
I looked at relocating up north, and was shocked to find the same kind of house anywhere that has jobs locally - is a lot higher than that!
Essentially, I can’t afford to move up north - let alone work for £7ph!
The local pubs in my area are all gone. The nearest pub to where I live (despite being in town) is a good mile away.
Chippies though - Now they ARE top notch around here… But probably a bit on the expensive side @ £8ish for cod and chips…

chippies though although i can reach whitby in 45 mins our local chippy, 10 mile away very rarely as cod!!
i can afford to work for the wage due to my circumstances and lifestyle… but if i were to do what majority are saying, that is dont work for my local guy but travel to find a job paying say £11 per hour, it would simply be pointless in me living where i do and trying to fulfill my dream if you like, in making my small holding work…
Winseer:

You southerners wouldn’t know a proper chippy if it slapped you in the face.
If it doesn’t do proper gravy, curry sauce, proper mushy peas with substance to them, chip butties on a proper barmcake & proper Holland’s pies & rag puddings it’s not worth visiting.
Me? - I like my fish and chips to have actual cod in the fish and potatoes in the chips.
As opposed to more bones than a python, and batter so thick you could coat breeze blocks with it.
The only “good” chippy I had up north was in Thirsk - the one in the town square that people queue two lanes to get into.
I managed to cotton on because everyone was double-queing for this particular establishment, whilst the other chippy across the way was staffed with some miserable old bat who practically sent the customers away!
I actually went in there first , not realising about the other one - asked for ‘some freshly cooked cod & chips’…
“I don’t mind waiting” said I… - and she tried to palm me off with the crappy withered specimens that had been under the hotlight all afternoon!
Clearly “Getting what you ask for in a shop” must be a southerner thing.
I’m grateful I found the second cushy place though - which of course would not have happened if I’d been served at first stop in the first place!
