Getting lorry drivers on their bikes to try to improve safet

A poll for the BBC as part of our cycling week has shown that five percent of people, one in 20, have been involved in a road rage incident between a motorist and a cyclist.

Graham Satchell has been to find out how police forces are trying to improve relations on the roads.

Should be cyclists sitting in cabs so they can see how they dissappear in the blindspots.

Cyclists should be trained before being allowed on the road , and also pay their way, they should have to take lessons, sit hazard and theory ,pass a test , be insured, and have a roadworthy vehicle, and be prosecuted for their faults . they do not have to read the highway code so don’t even know the rules of the road, but have the right to use it, maybe letting them ride on the pavement and hitting a pedestrian is safer than letting them on the road.

"Getting lorry drivers on their bikes to try to improve safet…Vrroooom! :open_mouth:

will these lorry drivers have a picture of a cycle on the back of their licence now ?

Oh no! Another gazillion pages of cycling crap!

It happens in cars too, I was behind another car waiting to turn right into a major road, so a car stopped to let us out and the first car moved off, I moved towards the stop line ready to go, when this idiot on a bike thought courtesy didn’t affect him, so rode up the inside of the cars, stopping me from getting out, I wound the window down and called him a few choice words, then he stopped, so I got out and said you had time to stop now, why couldn’t you have waited in the queue like others, I was just about to smack him one when he ran and jumped back on his bike, I wanted to chase him, but my missus told me to calm down, they make me so angry when they just don’t give a toss about others.

No, but where do tippers get those stickers with crossed-out bikes on them? :unamused: :smiling_imp:

Radar has it spot on its the cyclists that need educating, too many self righteous, ignorant, muppets among cyclists.

So the biased bs corporation news managed to find some so called truck ‘drivers’ who by inference admitted that they’ve been driving like idiots in regard to cyclists before going out on a cycle and will now drive differently after.Meanwhile,as usual, the cycling side were made out to be the victims who never do anything wrong. :unamused: :imp:

The issue of ‘filtering’/overtaking cyclists and motorcyclists makes the idea of giving way to turning traffic or turning when given way to a dangerous effectively unviable idea.In general it’s best to keep going in the case of the former and for turning traffic to refuse the offer in the case of the latter and wait for a clear gap.

I suspect TFL supplies them, judging by the font used on them (TFL manages major roads in Greater London).

Does it not come all as a package and part of the conditions of being a FORS accredited company. They have to display those signs and no doubt TFL are either the supplier or they have one supplier that must be used.

I think it would be a great idea for drivers to get on bikes. I often ride around and see drivers oblivious to cyclists. On the other hand I also agree it should be reciprocated. The problem is that with millions more able to cycle than to drive a truck, which company is going to offer to help out? They already moan about how hard it is to keep above the bread line so who will spend the fuel time and wages allowing cyclists the chance to see our point of view?

Where’s a re-post of that nice HD “No Problemo” vid shot by the Black Cabbie?

“now” would be a good time for a web repeat I’m thinking here…

Wow! A C+S entitlement!

It’s been my humble opinion for a long time that EVERY road user should have to experience the road from every other road user’s perspective, before they’re allowed to use a public highway.

Without taking sides, if lorry drivers, sorry, “truckers” :unamused: , had to ride a cycle on a busy road, (and yes, I do just that regularly), they might appreciate how a cyclist feels with 44 ton a few feet from his chuff. Similarly, all cyclists should have to ride in a lorry to make them aware of how vulnerable their stupidity makes them, amongst other things.

Most of the general motoring public neither know nor care about anyone else on the road, hence the “I’m going to drive at 40 mph in the middle lane of the M1 through the 50 mph limit, and sod everyone else” brigade. When I first met my OH, she openly admitted to me that she found lorries a nuisance, taking up all the road and taking hours to get going, etc, etc. Gentle education has altered her opinion somewhat  .

Even if folk don’t care, if they had the knowledge, the roads might just be that little bit safer.
