Getting charged for minor damage

That makes a lot of sense, ■■■■■■ off drivers can do a lot of damage to the pocket without bending anything :open_mouth:

This was why I paid my drivers well, I wanted decent blokes and I wanted to keep them, with a couple of exceptions I would give every one of my old drivers a job again if I started back up. As it happens I came back to the UK for a couple of months a while back and one of my old drivers called me up asking if I was starting up again as he wanted his old job back, so I must’ve done something right

The bloke I referred to as being easy to crash into was a different story, he was one of those got to be in front at all costs drivers, you know what it’s like out on the road, you can usually tell if someone is going to do something silly and you back off and avoid trouble, this bloke would carry on flat out with full beams and hooters as he was in ‘the right’ :unamused: There were more incidents, but the straw that broke the Camel’s Back was the third claim for a car crashing into the step where the North Circular meets the A13 (the car was in the middle lane, trying to cut into the inside lane at the last minute) I said enough’s enough and we parted company

It must of been a bloody high kerb!

Any kerb bigger than a standard road kerb I wouldn’t go anywhere near. I’d treat it like it was a wall.

But back to your point… I wouldn’t expect to have to pay for any damage - I’d also not to expect to have a job if I was damaging stuff every few months (not suggesting this is you OP)

The front of the merc is a good 9 inches lower than The fh im used to.
It was just a stupid mistake I was reversing out of the exit lanes of a truck stop because the gates wouldn’t open. I gave it a bit of steering and the step got cracked against the kerb.
I’d already been out the truck to find out why the gates was stuck and the kerb wasn’t what you’d call high, you would try run up it but I never imagined itd be anywhere near the step.

does the merc not have a mirror above passenger door? feeble excuse you damage the truck by not looking properly simple, all done it I have done it before but got away with no damage to truck just take it on chin.

Yeah simple mistake any idiot could do it take a bollocking on the chin I can handle that put shell out £170?

I think it’s wrong… But, is that a percentage of the damage cost or the full amount?

On a side note I’ve noticed RB have a few new Actross when I’ve passed. What are they like compared to the FH? I love the Volvos…

A local company with a few car transporters pays IIRC £1500 a year damage bonus…its not part of the wage structure as such and he pays well, it is a bonus…come Christmas if the driver has no load damage an extra £1500 goes in the packet, obviously deductable up to £1500’s worth of damage, above that the company pays assuming the driver still has a job, consequently damage is minimal.

This could easily work just as well for vehicle damage on other forms of transport, and has the double bonus of keeping drivers keen and they stay.

Some drivers only worry when its going to hit them in the pocket, it might not have mattered so much 30+ years ago when lorries were tough, had proper front bumpers a decent height from the ground made of steel, a Crane flat trailer wqs virtually unable to be damaged, but the latest must have fashions that comprise modern trucks are simply too fragile for industrial use…what was wrong with a Scammel step ring?, have a job to damage that on a kerb… :smiling_imp:
Rip a tractor rear wing off?, no problem when it was a Winguard universal @ £35 and 20 minutes to fit, God above knows what the latest poncy wings on the euroclones cost.
