Guys, I might be buying a tractor unit from Germany (near Munich) & collecting it in the next two weeks. The dealer said he can supply me with a 5 day temporary registration to cover the truck but as I will be driving it back solo will I need to pay any Maut??
when running solo you have to pay for a 2/3 axled unit
this is what we have to do when running to get a trailer from another yard
even if on 5day plates look HERE
just scroll down and you can read it,
AND THE MOBILE units will stop you and check you out any way,
no ticket, you get a fine
NEIL AND bIG250 , YOU have to pay why because your vehicle
is capable of carrying more than 12 gross weight ,it is not the weight of
your unit as such 7.5tn unit on its own, if you believe I am wrong ring them up and ask
we had to pay the maut as I said above,

FFS! And exactly where did I say different to that?
I am well aware you have to pay for a solo tractor unit, unless it is plated at less than 12 tonnes and that is unlikely with most being plated at 18 tonnes and above, and was merely providing a link for the OP to where that question was in the FAQ’s on the Toll Collect site. The same question he asked and the exact answer he was looking for straight from the horses mouth.

Thanks guys, it’s a 40 ton 4x2 tractor so I take it there is a catagory for ‘unit only’ on the ticket machine??
Thanks for the answers guys, I’ve not been to Germany since the Maut started so it’ll all be new to me. If it happens I’ll be coming from just south of Fulda in me new (old) truck, I’ll keep you informed.
Ross.
PS, how long (on the clock) to Aachen from Fulda, approx of course?

No specific category for unit only, you just select 2 as the number of axles. The other important information you will need to buy the maut is the EURO emissions class.
That’s a run of about 350 Km and they will give you at least 12 hours to complete it so unless you are planning an overnight stop you will be able to buy one ticket for the entire journey.

Thanks again guys, can the Maut be bought ‘on line’? If that’s possible I might be able to talk the sales bloke at the dealers to sort it if I pay.
Looks like it’s going to be a ‘Plains, Trains & Autmobiles’ trip with a flight from Manchester to Frankfurt, a train & a taxi to pick the truck up then head for Ostend to ready myself for a full search from the ever imaginitive Brit Customs boys who love anything different; an Englishman in a foreign truck, ‘bobtail’ on temp’ plates!!! (I can hear the snapping of rubber gloves already )
I was meaning that the temporary plates are of a different format to any others, so when the Maut asks for Country of Origin. It is Germany, is it possible that the temporary plates are recognised as that by the MAUT terminal?
After all a new truck going for PDI would not have an OBU fitted or any TC history.
i am a Yorkshireman and any thing to save a few pennies is the most important
Sorry, but it will not work, even the Schwaben;(WELL known for being tight fisted)
can not get away with that:First off the maut points take pictures and you have
the mobile MAUT patrol, If they catch you out the fine makes a hefty hole in your
wallet come bank account,

Just make sure the Dealer gives yoü the " Red plates" which Wheel Nut posted , the dealer has take the unit, when over 1year old for a short MOT (lights, brakes, tyres, steering)before getting issued with them.

why? its been a couple of years since the yellow plates where recognized EU-wide, nowadays you only need the red ones when exporting outside the EU, its an extra hundres euros or so.

The article I read mentioned that you could only have one type if you had a permanent address in Germany, the others were for permanent export.
My work is done anyway, it was just a suggestion to save Ross a few quid. By the way it is a long way from Fulda to Munchen

Guys, I’ll bow to the knowledge of the dealer (who’s a Merc main agent) regarding the temp plates which he tells me he can sort.
I have been looking at a few trucks and got a bit confused (one was in Landshut) but this one is a few K’s south of Fulda & no, I wouldn’t like to walk from Munchen to Fulda!!! (a simple mistake from a simple mind!!)
Anyways, if it can be sorted I’ll be going out there Mon 20th.
Thanks again for all the help from the German experts, it was never my regular stomping ground when I was at it full time and now they’ve gone and introduced the Maut!! More money

It’s all changed now mate, you can’t even get a packet of ■■■■ out of a vending machine for three five-pence pieces any more.
