Press the clutch, move the stick to the gear you desire, lift the clutch.
Some throttle after the lift can help too.

4 low, flick a switch, (front of gear stick) to go into high range for the same 4 again. each gear has a split if you require it, (side of stick) plus reverse. doddle to use, great manual box.
Thanks chillistrucker that’s what i wanted to no!
You need to dip your clutch for the split as well btw, just in case you didn’t know

Really
Starting off in 3rd low will dramatically reduce clutch life
Using every split on the way up the box is a total waste of time, effort and fuel, it may make you feel like a trucker, but all it does is make a lot of noise…and takes longer to get up to speed Anybody who tells you to drive a lorry like this is an idiot and does not know what they are talking about, FACT
The reason for multi speed transmissions is so that there is a gear that will keep in the engine in the correct rpm range no matter what the gradient/road condition/weight of the load/speed limit/whatever
The CORRECT progression in a 16spd box in a loaded lorry on level ground is 1st low, 2nd high, 4th low, 5th low, 6th low, 7th low, 7th high, 8th low and then 8th high

DAF don’t agree with you and have even gone to the trouble of putting a sticker in the window advising
the use of second gear to avoid premature clutch wear.
I realise that both they and I may be wrong but first gear of a 16 speed ZF, as fitted to a DAF XF95, feels remarkably like
a crawler gear.
Each full gear will drop the revs by about 500 and each half gear by about 250.
The lorry performs best if the engine revs are kept in the green area of the rev counter,
ie between 1000 and 1500 rpm.
Anything above 1500 just makes a lot of noise and wastes fuel, though there is an advantage
in using a bit more if climbing a very long and steep hill.
I find that loaded, low 2nd, 3rd,4th and 5th are needed to get going from a standstill used only within the green rev range.
After that, depending on the weight, either 6th, then split the last two or if really heavy, split the last three.
Unladen, still set off in high 2nd, then 4th, 5th, 6th,7th and split 8th.
In my opinion it’s one of the best manual gearboxes available in the UK and as Mr Newmercman says, there is a gear for every speed.
A week or so and you will be able to find the right ones, don’t try to rush it, it will fight back and try to guide the gearstick
rather than force it to go where you want.
Apologies if I am trying to teach you to ■■■■ eggs.
Regards,
Nick
What a ball ache…
In the XF I last drove you flicked a switch for forward and the other way for backwards…and I still got paid the same as ■■■■■■■ about with all those boring gears…
Thanks ppl very useful info much appreciated!
2nd low 4th 5th 6th 7th low 8th low 8th high all the gears you will need! dont rush it or over rev it and you will be fine. great truck great gearbox.

I find that funny, as it was the man from Daf who told me about the gear progression I described
You want low grapefruit, high pineapple, split mandarin chunks.
My mistake, that’s what the Man From Del Monte told me.
Same as a Scania, just another gate.
If you can`t use it, consider a career change

+1, works for me
newmerman.
you must run at some seriously heavy weights if you have to set off in 1st in DAF.
and the example i gave, was just that. an example.
it’s very difficult to tell someone what gears to use because it all depends on the weight of the load, and the terrain.
in a scania, i’d always have to use 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. but a DAF has always been comfortable starting from 3rd to 4th, or 2nd to 4th.

Wow, what a load of messing about that is, get ya self an auto only one button to turn.
Oh and the gear/clutch issue, my auto will set off in 4th out of 12.
What’s all that splitting about?
i had one of those new fangled autos once.
as soon as i sat on the bunk to read the paper, or open a bottle of wine, the bloody thing went all over the road.
auto???my arse.
